Paul Kooiker: Nude Animal Cigar

Isbn 9789490800284
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 15057
€ 45.00

Paul Kooiker is among the most interesting conceptual photographers currently working in the Netherlands. Although his work consists of photographic images, he is not so much a photographer as a sculptor and installation artist. His fascination with intriguing themes like voyeurism, innocence and clichés leads him to construct fictive collections of images that are of extremely uncertain origin, subject and significance. In his latest installation, 'Nude Animal Cigar', Kooiker looks back over his twenty-year career. The result is a bewildering array of photographic works, in which images of nudes and animals are interspersed with close-ups of the countless cigars he has smoked in his studio over the years.

Jan Hoek: The Pattaya Sex Bubble

Isbn 9789490800314
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 15068
€ 25.00

Jan Hoek travelled to Pattaya, Thailand’s sex capital, to make ten different magazines in which a cast of unusual characters plays out strange narratives and suggests seedy encounters. Through photo collages, scribbled drawings, short stories, conversations, handwritten diary entries, water-damaged photographs, and grainy portraits, a picture emerges of Hoek’s light and humorous creative efforts as a foreigner in a far away place that caters to the sex industry. Transgender prostitutes known as “lady boys” are his main protagonists, with whom he builds personal relationships and has various adventures, like trying out a mermaid costume, or visiting a wax museum.

You Say Light, I Think Shadow

Isbn 9789198087482
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 15077
€ 97.90

To formulate this collection, graphic designer Sandra Praun and artist Aleksandra Stratimirović posed the question, “What is light?” to an international array of creative and eclectic individuals, from artists, lighting designers, and writers, to architects, photographers, and film-makers. The spectrum of responses they received in return is compiled and visualised in this surprising and boldly conceived volume incorporating poetic and personal thoughts, visions, memories, definitions, stories, and much more. Page after page, it presents a fascinating portrayal of the essential and pervasive concept embodied by light in the workings of the creative mind.

Viviane Sassen - Lexicon

Isbn 9784902080483
Publisher Artbeat Publishers
Idea code 15058
€ 58.75

Initially curated for the 55th Venice Biennale and comprising images from Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen’s earlier publications Flamboya (2008) and Parasomnia (2011), in addition to previously unpublished photographs, this series can be seen as offering a point of departure from which to explore Sassen’s aesthetic and imaginative world, revealing key elements of her visual vocabulary, just as the title suggests. By building collections of related images, combining them in a certain way, Sassen explores narratives that go beyond the isolated image. The men, women, and children appearing in her photos, seemingly casually posed, are more compositions than individuals.

Daisuke Yokota Corpus

Isbn 9784902080469
Publisher Artbeat
Idea code 15059
€ 47.00

More than 40 engrossing images make up this series of grainy, black-and-white photographs by Daisuke Yokota, the first to feature his nude photography. Through a visual expression that mixes reality and fiction, an indecipherable tangle of human limbs and torsos is made eerily yet sensually tangible within the close quarters of a nondescript bedroom space. Deep shadows threaten to engulf the writhing, fleshy bodies of what seem to be a man and a woman, even as the suggested intimacy of their interaction is negated by the extreme proximity in which Yokota places the viewer.

Sakura Ando Photographed By Chikashi Suzuki

Isbn 9784898153956
Publisher Little More
Idea code 15009
€ 112.85

Chikashi Suzuki’s photographs of Japanese actress Sakura Ando are interspersed with scenes of her native Tokyo, its blossoming cherry trees, outdoor parks, and limitless progression of buildings. The subject herself, however, remains aloof and intangible in the majority of these portraits and snapshots, even when reclining nude in a wooden bath. The photo book mostly seems a forced tribute to an uninspiring muse. Only when gentle sunlight shines across Sakura’s face and she looks us directly in the eye do we begin to get a sense of her fragility and power.

Xiaoxiao Xu - The Way To The Golden Mountain

Isbn 9780984820245
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 15062
€ 4.00

In 1999, as a teenager, Xiaoxiao Xu moved from China to The Netherlands. Photography became her antidote to the isolation that she felt, a means for telling stories and making clear what it was that occupied her. In 2009 she started to photograph the city from which she and her parents had come. Wenzhou is a large port city, with a population of three million. She was overwhelmed by the combination of memories and contemporary experiences. She could identify with the city, but at the same time felt herself to be an outsider – just as she did in The Netherlands. This resulted in “The Way To The Golden Mountain”, a book that shows the city and surroundings as a personal and emotional experience.

Salvo 4: Black Is A Matter Of Taste

Isbn 9789082029123
Publisher Salvo
Idea code 15041
€ 15.00

In 2004, four members of ‘Salvo’ began their education in photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Theo van Dusseldorp, a master of the medium’s technical aspects, was their professor for several years. Although photography is traditionally considered a medium balancing art and technique, few publications explicitly show their mutual interaction. Here, the intimate relation that exists between art and technique, between advertisement and science, is articulated through a selection of the over 25,000 Polaroids Van Dusseldorp made between 1978 and 2001 as studies for his product photos. He recently gave them to ‘Salvo’, who were free to use them as they saw fit.

Nerhol: Phrase Of Everything

Isbn 2867254092162
Publisher Amana
Idea code 15014
€ 2.00

Nerhol is an artist unit formed in 2007 and composed of graphic designer Yoshihisa Tanaka and sculptor Ryuta Iida. The former builds the conceptual framework of their output, while the latter carves it into being. In this case, the results of this collaboration are thickly layered portraits of a single subject photographed for the duration of several minutes. The outcome of this process is 200 images, which then are printed, bound and then sheared off, layer by layer, to produce the final, dizzying portrait. Thus the identity revealed in these portraits is not permanent, but rather one that remains in continuous flux, produced both by the passage of time and Nerhol’s own whims.

Uri Gershuni - The Blue Hour

Isbn 9783941644724
Publisher The Green Box
Idea code
€ 40.85

In 'The Blue Hour', Uri Gershuni wanders through the English village of Lacock, in the rural county of Wiltshire, which was home in the nineteenth century to the inventor of photography William Henry Fox Talbot. Gershuni’s trip to the village is not a first trip, nor indeed is it properly described as a trip. First, this is not his first visit to Lacock, but a return visit. He first visited the village three years ago in search of the origins of photography. This time he finds a mode of movement in his non-movement, and this possibility, it turns out, opens up before him when he sits facing the computer screen, through which he may once again visit the village, at least virtually.

€ 19.95

When Ringel Goslinga was given the opportunity to use a camera belonging to celebrated local photographer Lee To Sang, who for years ran a photo studio in De Pijp, one of Amsterdam’s most vibrant working-class neighbourhoods, he set out to document the people in the area around the former studio. The result is a series of portraits that form a link between the work of To Sang and Goslinga’s own turbulent childhood, as well as his distinct memories of the diversity of people he encountered in the district. It is a series brimming with nostalgia, full of individual narratives and characters, and interspersed with snapshots from Goslinga’s own family album.
