Marie-Jose Jongerius - Edges Of The Experiment

Isbn 9789490119263
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 15120
€ 50.00

'Edges of the Experiment' investigates the idyllic notion of the American landscape, showing which elements contribute to the iconic landscape, and at what cost they can be maintained. It describes the thin line between nature and civilisation. How did the landscape evolve, and where are the interfaces between the organic and the artificial world, and do they fail or succeed? 'Edges of the Experiment' is a two-volume publication. Volume one shows over 60 photographs made over a period of ten years by Jongerius. Volume two is a collection of essays about the making of the American Landscape, with texts by Matthew Coolidge, William L. Fox, Hans Gremmen, Taco Hidde Bakker, Mark Pimlott, Warren Techentin, Raymond Frenken and others.

Reto Caduff Respect The Dots!

Isbn 9780984820238
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 15079
€ 35.50

Swiss-born photographer Reto Caduff searched out the most beautifully freckled female models for his black-and-white homage to dotted skin. This series of portraits is a reprint of his first limited edition book, ‘Freckles’ (2012). Although many of the women fulfil the freckled stereotype – that is to say, they are of probable Northern European ancestry – others are an intriguing mix of races and genetic backgrounds for whom freckled skin is no less a personal identifier worn with pride. The book includes an introduction by Professor Jonathan Rees, who with his team of researchers identified the role of a specific gene in determining red hair, sun sensitivity, and freckling.

Olivo Barbieri - Flippers 1977-1978

Isbn 9788887440850
Publisher Danilo Montanari
Idea code 15030
€ 53.75

The first series ever realised by Italian photographer Olivo Barbieri, ‘Flippers’ derives from his discovery of an abandoned, derelict pinball machine factory, and marks the starting point of his observations on visualising the superficial, which would lead to his artistic engagement with the uncertainty of the world’s surface. The fragmented pinball machines act as a cultural reminder, a throwback to the flashing momentum of the 1960s and ’70s, with rock music, science fiction, movie stars, and flower power. Published in its entirety for the first time, the pinball project was a formative experience for the photographer in his early years. Includes an interview with Barbieri and Francesco Zanot.

Rinko Kawauchi - Leiko Ikemura

Isbn 9784904257258
Publisher Nohara
Idea code 15095
€ 31.35

This tranquilly meandering volume is a record of conversations between two artists who are also long-time friends, conducted through poetry and softly resonant photographs. Artist Leiko Ikemura’s main techniques are painting and ceramic sculpture. Photographer Rinko Kawauchi is trusted by Ikemura to be present as she produces her taut, finely honed works. The correspondence that continues when they are apart, radiating and responding to each other’s artistic realms, expresses their individual approaches to the indeterminate nature of our world. The correspondence accompanying their respective travels is also included in the book.

Helene Schmitz: Borderlands

Isbn 9789198157376
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 15099
€ 40.70

Contradictory beauty and multifaceted transience characterise the photographs of spaces and landscapes by Swedish photographer Helene Schmitz. Her series ‘Earthworks’ (abandoned rooms filled with sand) and ‘Sunken Gardens’ (an overgrown butterfly farm in the jungle) even approach a kind of claustrophobic serenity in their closeness and sense of intrusion. Similarly, “Kudzu Project” portrays another kind of suffocation, wherein she turns her lens on the overwhelming tendencies of a specific plant. Schmitz’s work thus makes us question our preconceptions of nature. Published on the occasion of an eponymous exhibition at Dunkers kulturhus in Helsingborg.

Maria Friberg: Changed Positions

Isbn 9789188031013
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 15098
€ 42.90

According to the foreword by Lorella Scacco, “In her photographs and video works, Maria Friberg deals with the sociological aspects of our time by creating an interplay between beauty and ambiguity.” The Swedish artist’s work primarily revolves about themes of power, masculinity, and man’s relationship to nature. More recent works challenge preconceived notions about identity, gender, and social hierarchies. The series included in this book are often meditative, setting lone figures against empty interior or natural backdrops. Their isolation and solitude is interrupted by the presence of electronic devices, like laptops and smartphones, in a subtle commentary.

Salvo 5: Actual Size

Isbn 9789082029130
Publisher Salvo
Idea code 15110
€ 15.00

Although photography is inherently considered to be an objective medium, nevertheless a picture almost always involves scaling. It seems that we have become accustomed to interpreting photos - recognition and scaling of depicted objects is an automatic response to seeing photographs. This issue of 'Salvo' shines a light on the duality of of actual representation. Every photograph inside this publication is either printed on the same size as the object that is photographed, or is a study on how to achieve this actual representation.

Ed Templeton: Wayward Cognitions

Isbn 9780985361129
Publisher Um Yeah Press
Idea code 15131
€ 47.90

'Wayward Cognitions' is a collection of photographs by Ed Templeton, chosen from his archives spanning 20 years. For this volume, Templeton selected photographs that do not fit into his usual manner of organising by theme or subject. In past publications he has arranged his work in straightforward groupings such as 'Teenage Kissers', 'Teenage Smokers', or photographs shot from a moving car (as in his book 'The Seconds Pass'). This book represents the in-between moments that arise when shooting in the streets without theme or subject.

Marco Citron - Urbanism 1.01

Isbn 9788898120512
Publisher Danilo Montanari
Idea code 15031
€ 26.90

Temporal displacement plays a key role in this attractive series of 40 colour photographs by Marco Citron. Through the use of a specific colour palette, reminiscent of postcards from the 1960s, he creates a nostalgic aura around his subject matter, the architectural landscapes of the Soviet Bloc. Housing blocks, wide plazas, highways on which only Trabants drive, and monumental governmental edifices comprise these sparsely populated landscapes. They challenge the viewer with their retro ambiguity. Mixing reality and fiction, “it is difficult to know whether Citron is recording some of the planning conceits of the Soviet era, or inventing them,” according to the text by Gerry Badger.

Julian Charriere - Polygon

Isbn 9783941644755
Publisher The Green Box
Idea code 15065
€ 31.20

Polygon is a series of photographs shot at the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan. The photographs are made on analogue medium format film, and exposed to radiation before their development. Thus they both depict the site of nuclear radiation and bear the actual trace of radioactivity's effect. Charrière’s journey to the Polygon was inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story “The Terminal Beach”. It oscillates between art, science and fiction and brings us to one of the most remote and inaccessible spheres – to the beginning of the nuclear age. It is a mystic place – a nuclear space – antithetic to human life, and showing the dystopic aesthetics of a future archaeology.

The first monograph by London-based photographer Christopher J. Everard, this book, which focuses on the reality of adult entertainment in the United States, represents the first episode of a larger body of work on guilt. Diligently researched, it presents a first-person narrative exploration inside the porn industry, wherein he documents encounters with its actors, producers, and stars. Everad investigates the prurient attitudes which lead those regions with its most vociferous opponents to be its highest consumers, and travels to the Midwest in search of answers. Publisher Dust-o-digital

€ 39.00

In the 1930s the Massengill family of rural Arkansas built three portable photography studios on old truck frames, attached each to the back of any car that would run, and started a mobile photo booth business that would last for a decade. Without formal training they invented ways to mimic the popular photo booth and brought their business to the dirt roads and open fields. 'Making Pictures', featuring Massengill family prints and photo albums collected by the artist Maxine Payne, illuminates a Depression-era South previously unseen by the public.
