Ante Timmermans - Drawings (001-806)

Isbn 9789491843419
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 15483
€ 60.00

Visual artist Ante Timmermans expresses himself through various media, but is primarily seen as a draftsman. The spontaneity and immediacy of his drawings are important characteristics of his work, and repetition and routine formed the basis of his early work, which portrays a grey, cheerless world of routine, order, control, and absurdity. Timmermans often uses associative puns, and his recent work focuses on the “nonsensical man”, a nod to the directionless period of time where we now find ourselves. The book presents over 800 drawings from 2002–2015 in strict chronological order, allowing readers to follow the artist’s flow of thoughts, themes, and interconnections.

Marc Nagtzaam - Zeichnungen

Isbn 9789491843372
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 15482
€ 45.00

This presentation of work by Marc Nagtzaam is published as part of the research project ‘The Aesthetic of the Fragment’, part of the Horizontal Drawing platform at St Lucas University College of Art & Design Antwerp. Also included is a series of wall drawings at the office of Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp. The compositional approach he uses when making drawings is also reflected in the structure of the book. Nagtzaam reveals the link between the hard-edge abstraction of his works, which can be read as architectural plans, and the spatial installations in which they function as elements in a larger composition, suggestive of an obscure organising principle.

Object Onder / Object Below, Sanders Collection

Isbn 9783863358334
Publisher Koenig
Idea code 15511
€ 20.00

For over forty years, the Dutch art collectors Pieter and Marieke Sanders avidly collected the work of relatively young and unknown artists from the Netherlands and overseas. Their art collection, that spans three generations of artists, is one of the most important in the Netherlands. OBJECT ONDER / OBJECT BELOW, SANDERS COLLECTION was realised on the occasion of the Sanderses´ gift to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam of over hundred works of art in 2013 and the exhibition that followed in 2015. The publication, that has been developed in close collaboration with photographer Johannes Schwartz and graphic designer Julie Peeters, explores through photographs and texts the transformation that artworks undergo when they change context, from the intimacy of a private environment to the public realm of the museum. With an essay by Cornel Bierens, a poem by Maria Barnas and an interview with the collectors.

Douglas Coupland - Bit Rot

Isbn 9789491435423
Publisher Witte De With
Idea code 15504
€ 20.00

Douglas Coupland’s new book 'Bit Rot', published on the occasion of his exhibition at Witte de With, combines fictional short stories with columns, and creates a parallel narrative to the exhibition itself. 'Bit Rot' addresses subjects such as the death of the middle class, the rise of the internet and its impact on our lives, and in short, evinces a shedding of twentieth-century notions of what the future is and could be. The book is named after a phenomenon in digital archiving that describes the way digital files of any sort spontaneously decompose.

Flaneur Issue 05: Fokionos Negri, Athens

Isbn 9783945918005
Publisher Edition Messner
Idea code 15524
€ 15.00

Flaneur is a nomadic, independent magazine focussing on one street per issue. Following the oral history of the neighbourhood of Kypseli, the fifth issue of Flaneur Magazine finds itself entangled in a story-heavy microcosm. Fokionos Negri, once a river, now a broad and green, two-sided boulevard becomes a stage of overlapping narratives where stories are told and retold. As on every stage, the desire for the story is stronger than the need to subdue it to rigid logic. The magazine emerses itself in these fragments until they become our very own memory.

Revolutionary Experimental Space R.e.p.

Isbn 9783941644762
Publisher The Green Box
Idea code 15497
€ 34.40

The R.E.P. group addresses a number of themes that are variously symptomatic of the current state of Ukrainian society – in its relations with the rest of the world and its internal problematics, which are considered universally. These include labour migration and the state of post-Soviet cultural institutions; social stratification and shared mythical images of prosperity; Soviet heritage and the simulation of westernisation, as in “Eurorenovation”; popular demand for a certain type of art and the individual responsibility of the artist.

Ellen Harvey: The Museum Of Failure

Isbn 9781941366035
Publisher Gregory R. Miller & Co.
Idea code 15491
€ 61.25

From her earliest experiments with painting old-master landscapes as graffiti on the streets of New York, to her recent project 'The Alien's Guide to the Ruins of Washington, DC (2013)' at the Corcoran in Washington, DC, Ellen Harvey has applied her unique and humorous perspective to unpacking the history of art and aesthetics. Taking its title from the ongoing project featured in the 2008 Whitney Biennial, a rear-illuminated wall of plexiglass mirrors in ornate frames, 'The Museum of Failure' is the first major retrospective publication on the artist's work, looking at each of her major projects and bodies of work of the past 20 years.

Fiona Rae

Isbn 9780992930929
Publisher Timothy Taylor Gallery
Idea code 15490
€ 24.80

This new series of greyscale paintings from 2014–2015 marks a significant development in Rae’s practice. Each painting’s composition predicates a notional figure, whose existence is simultaneously manifested and denied in a theatre of direct performative mark-making. These are abstract compositions teetering on the edge of figuration, expressively rendered in black, white and tones of grey. Within this rigorous and strategic system of hue reduction and subtle balancing of tonal relationships, Rae has nevertheless created an intensely colourful and dynamic suite of paintings that embody both the tropes of modernist idealism and the distanced manipulations of a Photoshop-inflected present.

Tal R Chimney School Of Sculpture

Isbn 9780992709297
Publisher Victoria Miro
Idea code 15489
€ 32.65

Tal R has often used the word 'kolbojnik', meaning leftovers in Hebrew, to describe his practice of sourcing and collecting a wide range of imagery, figurative and abstract, from high and low culture. Installed collectively, Tal R’s works can give the impression of a group show, as adherence to a single aesthetic style is eschewed in favour of a non-hierarchical exploration of material and form. This will be explored in this exhibition, which stages sculptures alongside furniture works and a series of paintings and works on paper. Text by Tom Morton.

Justin Lieberman The Correctors Custom Prefab House

Isbn 9782908252569
Publisher Les Presses Du Reel
Idea code 15448
€ 12.90

With a subversive sense of humour, Justin Lieberman perverts and recontextualises images from the media and pop culture in an attempt to undermine the organisational structures inherent in contemporary culture. Lieberman has long employed this sort of methodology, which in past bodies of work has played out through the recognisable systems of advertising, furniture design, home shopping television, art conservation, and taxonomic display to name a few. Favouring the handmade to the mass-produced, Lieberman transforms readymade images and objects, by painting, collaging, and combining them in an unmistakable style informed by notions of excess and transgression.

Cassils

Isbn 9789079423088
Publisher Mu
Idea code 15488
€ 29.50

Heather Cassils is a performance artist and body builder who uses her own body in a sculptural fashion, thereby interrogating feminism, body art, and gay male aesthetics. Together, her body of work and physical body stretch and play with the boundaries between binary conceptions of gender, and between vulnerability and strength. Applying extreme techniques uncommon to the realm of contemporary art, such as bodybuilding, stunts, and martial arts, transgender physiques emerge that physically question notions of violence and resistance from a transgendered perspective, illustrated here through several compelling works. With essays by David J. Getsy and Julia Steinmetz.

David Altmejd: The Flux And The Puddle

Isbn 9780990662808
Publisher David Altmejd Studio
Idea code
€ 89.10

Canadian sculptor David Altmejd presents his large-scale Plexiglass installation 'The Flux and the Puddle', a multilayered, structural environment in which werewolves, smashed mirrors and sculpted heads are strategically placed. "I think of the big Plexiglas box as a kind of stage or a laboratory space," Altmejd explained to a reviewer for Art in America. "The work is operatic. It's basically about the making of sculpture. Everything you see was made from inside the box. Ideas germinated from the inside. I let the work evolve and grow as much as possible. There's very little that's premeditated; it's not pre-designed."

Future Publics (The Rest Can And Should Be Done By The People)

Isbn 9789078088943
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 15500
€ 24.00

In this book, artists, theorists and activists reflect on the emergence of radically new publics. With origins in moments of social crisis and political uncertainty, these individuals question existing forms of collective organisation, decision-making structures and protocols for the construction of social value and cultural meaning. Utopian yet pragmatic, insurgent yet self-critical, these publics resist being normalised and instead contribute actively to the formation of new solidarities, cutting across conventional lines of class, region, ethnicity and ideology. With contributions by Katya Sander, Ariella Azoulay, Manuel Beltrán, Dóra Hegyi, Simon Sheikh and more.

Mobile Autonomy - Exercises In Artists' Self-Organization

Isbn 9789492095107
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 15461
€ 19.90

Neoliberalism has taken autonomous professional values and labour firmly in its grasp. Work has become freelance, flexible, mobile, project-based, hybrid and temporary. This way of working is not new to artists. They have seen themselves confronted with these precarious conditions since many years. 'Mobile Autonomy' detects what modes of economy and different innovative working modalities artists and other artistic professionals have developed in order to create their work in today’s social, economic and political conditions.

Politics Of Study

Isbn 9780949004123
Publisher Open Editions
Idea code 15456
€ 23.60

Universities and art schools alike have been subjected to the pressure of recent austerity politics and the ongoing attempt to transform higher education according to the demands of reigning neoliberals. In this context, it is urgent to conceive of alternative frameworks and methodologies of study – whether within, outside or at the margins of academic institutions. This book examines the current interest in education through a series of conversations with artists, theorists, activists and educators, including Suhail Malik, Brian Holmes, Ruth Sonderegger, Gerald Raunig, Judy Chicago, Gal Kirn, Mohammad Salemy, Melissa Gordon, Marina Vishmidt and Andrea Fraser.
