Dana Lixenberg - Imperial Courts 1993-2015

Isbn 9789491843426
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 15570
€ 60.00

In 1992, Dana Lixenberg travelled to South Central Los Angeles for a magazine story on the riots that erupted following the verdict in the Rodney King trial. What she encountered inspired her to revisit the area, and led her to the community of the Imperial Courts housing project in Watts. Returning countless times over the following twenty-two years, Lixenberg gradually created a collaborative portrait of the changing face of this community. Over the years, some in the community were killed, while others disappeared or went to jail, and others, once children in early photographs, grew up and had children of their own. In this way, Imperial Courts constitutes a complex and evocative record of the passage of time in an underserved community.

Hanne Van Der Woude - Vivace (Reprint, English)

Isbn 9789490119379
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 15513
€ 30.00

For five years Hanne van der Woude shared life's joys and sorrows with an older married couple and a brother: people who never lost touch with their creativity or non-conformist disposition. Van der Woude is focussing on Emmy: the 83-year old artist who lives in an old school building in the Betuwe. Two central elements of Emmy's personallity are an inexhaustible admiration for nature and the urge to collect. Van der Woude used photography, film and documents such as sketchbooks and notebooks, in order to show Emmy's unique but also very familiar world. 'Vivace' is a moving portrait which touches on several important topics in society, such as intergenerational friendship, creativity, the art of living, independence and care.

Publisher Aman Iman Publishing
Idea code 15523
€ 37.65

“Once upon a time in Siberia, on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, in a warm bed in a small town, a little girl woke up from a dream…” So begins the brief narrative accompanying this magnificent series of photographs by Evgenia Arbugaeva. Although educated in New York and working as a freelance photographer since 2009, she was born in the town of Tiksi, located in the Russian Arctic. In her personal work, Arbugaeva often investigates her homeland, discovering and capturing this remote northern world and the people who inhabit it. The icy white expanses and bright colours of the town’s buildings and the little girl’s clothing are sharply and beautifully rendered.

Daido Moriyama Record 28

Isbn
Publisher Akio Nagasawa
Idea code 15531
€ 35.00

In early summer 2014, Daido Moriyama travelled more than 400 kilometres across Taiwan to shoot his first “on the road” photographs in a long time. Starting in Kaohsiung, he journeyed between the cities of Tainan, Chiayi, Taichung, Taipei, and Keelung, passing through various smaller towns and villages along the way, all the while taking pictures intended for publication in a book. Reproduced here are numerous images that did not make the book’s selection, but still paint a picture of urban and rural Taiwanese life in Moriyama’s signature grainy black-and-white style.

Miyuki Okuyama - Dear Japanese

Isbn 9789492051127
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 15516
€ 26.00

In 1942, Japan attacked and occupied Indonesia, which was at the time a colony of the Netherlands known as the Dutch East Indies. Their fathers and brothers imprisoned in Japanese camps, Dutch-Indonesian women were left to fend for themselves, and many young women had relationships with Japanese men – for love, economic need, or against their will. Following Japan’s capitulation, Indonesia waged a war of independence against its former Dutch occupiers, yet thereafter many children of mixed Japanese and Dutch-Indonesian decent still found themselves stigmatised, growing up in an atmosphere of hostility and taboo. This book portrays these people today.

Through her raw, intimate, and endearing sense of photography, Rosetzsky presents page after page of personal insight into the magical world that is “young love”, that all-consuming, overwhelming moment filled with tenderness and desire, when nothing else seems to matter: dreamlike portraits of young couples in the bedroom, in the city, at the shore, or bathed in natural light.

Isbn 9789070478438
Publisher Kesselskramer
Idea code 15505
€ 36.45

Contrary to popular propaganda, size does matter. To our delight this obsessive and primal preoccupation with the stature of ones manhood compelled men from all over the globe to photograph their trouser snakes in the most inventive ways and slingshot these intimate portraits into the public cyberspace for us to enjoy. Men ‘exhibiting’ their Johnsons is nothing new, Da Vinci probably painted a few dick pics of his own in his time. But it’s the first time these practical portraits have been bundled in a book. 'Useful Photography #13' takes you on a wild ride through the magical world of flesh photography that is both humorous and at times, unexpectedly educational.

Sofie Knijff - Asnoix

Isbn
Publisher Sofie Knijff
Idea code 15476
€ 35.00

Asnoix is the old name for Assenois, a village in the Belgian Ardennes. Life seems to stand still there. Through many visits over several years, Sofie Knijff gradually grew attached to the area. Inspired by the purity of its natural landscape, she came to appreciate the different aspects of local rural life. This series of images reminds us of the power of nature, which is reflected in the daily lives of the people living there, and in how various layers of society are connected: the family domain of the nobility, the village inhabitants, the hunters during autumn, and the scouts building camps in summer. Included are photographs of bygone days, to show how little has changed over time.

Erik Van Der Weijde - Pomerode

Isbn 9789491047077
Publisher 4478zine
Idea code 15493
€ 26.00

For this photobook, Erik van der Weijde travelled to Pomerode, a municipality in the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. The settlement was founded by Pomeranian Germans in 1861, and is known as the most German city in Brazil, as the majority of its inhabitants are of German descent. In Pomerode, as in some other localities in southern Brazil, the German language is not considered a foreign language, but a Brazilian linguistic regionalism. Van der Weijde is therefore able to blend together several of his recurring themes, such as German history, architecture, and contemporary Brazil, in this series of images.

Object Onder / Object Below, Sanders Collection

Isbn 9783863358334
Publisher Koenig
Idea code 15511
€ 20.00

For over forty years, the Dutch art collectors Pieter and Marieke Sanders avidly collected the work of relatively young and unknown artists from the Netherlands and overseas. Their art collection, that spans three generations of artists, is one of the most important in the Netherlands. OBJECT ONDER / OBJECT BELOW, SANDERS COLLECTION was realised on the occasion of the Sanderses´ gift to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam of over hundred works of art in 2013 and the exhibition that followed in 2015. The publication, that has been developed in close collaboration with photographer Johannes Schwartz and graphic designer Julie Peeters, explores through photographs and texts the transformation that artworks undergo when they change context, from the intimacy of a private environment to the public realm of the museum. With an essay by Cornel Bierens, a poem by Maria Barnas and an interview with the collectors.

Lennart Durehed: Vicinity

Isbn 9789188031181
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 15545
€ 37.40

Time and place have a central significance in Swedish photographer Lennart Durehed’s work, manifested in titles that usually refer to specific cities or neighbourhoods. Often utilising reflections to great effect, surroundings become mirrored by glossy facades of glass and metal. This creates visual layers and, like a montage, ambivalent and angular spatialities arise. Two series are included in this book, ‘Vicinity’ and ‘Ceilings’, in which buildings are seldom depicted in their entirety; rather, as details and segments of the urban realm that emphasise the image as an image, drawing out the graphic interplay between surface and depth through their sharp composition.

Simon Rimaz - Unusual View Of Unknown Subjects

Isbn 9789462261693
Publisher Lecturis
Idea code 15535
€ 29.95

This 2013 series by Simon Rimaz comprises a body of work based on press photographs collected in various newspaper archives in the United States. Images that are published in the press are gathered in these archives, and marked, numbered, and indexed by date or keyword. From amongst all these marks, Rimaz has focused on the indications showing how the image was to be cropped for publication. These “stigmata” are proof of the image’s use, and of its transformation; indications of "that-which-has-been", a fundamental notion in the history of the photographic medium. He uses them to cut out what was published, completely removing the image seen by the public.

Jos Jansen - Battlefields

Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 15517
€ 16.00

There is one place in particular where your fingers are performing choreographies that were unknown just a few years ago. A place where the physical world merges into a virtual world, the reversible into the irreversible, and the controllable into the uncontrollable. A place that is also a symbol of our compulsive desire to be connected all the time, and of our new internal struggle: How much of our privacy are we willing to sacrifice? Clicks, taps, pinches, and swipes. Traces of human behaviour… left like a battlefield.

Publisher Noorderlicht (aurora Borealis)
Idea code 15463
€ 17.30

The catalogue for an eponymous exhibition on our perception of North Korea through photographic representation. What impression does the West have of this nation caught between reality and propaganda, based on the images that are available to us? With this central question, the official version of the state is compared and juxtaposed with alternative views of the country provided by the ten participating artists. Among them, Ari Hatsuzawa’s bright and ordinary view of Pyongyang, David Guttenfelder’s Instagram feed, the bleak grey-brown landscapes of Tomas van Houtryve, Seung Woo Back’s dystopian architectural visions, and the Kim personality cult as seen by Pierre Bessard.

Flaneur Issue 05: Fokionos Negri, Athens

Isbn 9783945918005
Publisher Edition Messner
Idea code 15524
€ 15.00

Flaneur is a nomadic, independent magazine focussing on one street per issue. Following the oral history of the neighbourhood of Kypseli, the fifth issue of Flaneur Magazine finds itself entangled in a story-heavy microcosm. Fokionos Negri, once a river, now a broad and green, two-sided boulevard becomes a stage of overlapping narratives where stories are told and retold. As on every stage, the desire for the story is stronger than the need to subdue it to rigid logic. The magazine emerses itself in these fragments until they become our very own memory.

Salvo 8: Side Show

Isbn 9789082029147
Publisher Salvo
Idea code 15543
€ 15.00

Unintentionally, when taking a photograph of a particular subject, one also captures other things. This democratic aspect, the camera’s indifferent reproduction of whatever the photographer aims to frame, causes a wealth of additional information in images. This edition addresses this theme, and seeks to reverse the intention to retrieve new information and highlight the “sideshow”. For instance, accidentally photographed flora and fauna, like flower arrangements, cats, pigeons, and even half horses. Or, taking it a step further, the experimental recovery of information lost by framing and cropping, through physically adding what the photographed subject might be seeing.

Editorials feature Japanese female divers, Swedish rainwear brand Stutterheim, and designer Kumi Edstrom-Kawaji. The concept of genre within photography is questioned, different messages and motives are presented, and the fixed idea of what a magazine can be is challenged.
