Isbn 9788460834250
Publisher Avisa
Idea code 15687
€ 34.10

Comprising three texts, twelve works, and six projects, this instalment’s focus on Spanish architect Fernando Menis brings to the forefront his idiosyncratic style, with works characterised by their adaptability and sustainability, combining strong material expression and the inherent elements of the urban or natural landscape with architecture. Barry Bergdoll describes the geological character of the architect’s work and its relevance in a globalised world, while Víctor Lledó, a collaborator at the studio, explains the working methods used there. Featured built works include La Orotava Botanical Garden, Alisios Social Housing, and the Jordanki Cultural and Congress Centre.

A+U 542 15:11 RCR Arquitectes - Journey

Isbn 4910019731153
Publisher Shinkenchiku-sha
Idea code 15661
€ 23.90

According to the essay by Enric Batlle i Durany, “the landscape plays a very active role in all of RCR’s works. The location is not just an additional aspect in their conception process. It is the physical and metaphysical basis of their work.” In this marvellous special issue, full of extraordinary images and stories, a portrait emerges of architects Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, and Ramón Vilalta that is both intimate and enlightening. It tells about their early years, how they learned from Japan, and gives an overview of recent work. Included are numerous drawings, ink washes, exfoliations, and models made by the office, reflecting both their shared creativity and ongoing dialogues.

Volume 46: Shelter

Isbn 9789077966464
Publisher Archis
Idea code 15731
€ 19.50

Shelter is most immediately associated today with conditions of disaster, displacement and destitution. There is an inherent urgency to the word; it is first and foremost a necessity, a human right even. Yet thought of as the absolute minimum necessary to survive, shelter is an architectural stigma. Shelter is not a thing though; shelter is a verb; if there is such a thing as shelter, it is because whatever it is, shelters. 'Volume 46' is dedicated to the question of how shelter can be reformulated as an architectural project.

Monu 23: Participatory Urbanism

Isbn 4197754115008
Publisher Board Publishers
Idea code 15626
€ 15.00

In order to avoid participation in architecture and urban design becoming merely a politically required token of democratic involvement, architects, planners, and designers need to commit themselves and relinquish control, claims Jeremy Till in this issue’s opening interview. With this theme, the goal is to uncover and reassess to what extent individual citizens actually can and should become proactive in the shaping and development of cities and neighbourhoods. With contributions from Damon Rich, Serafina Amoroso, Marina Abramović, Cathy Smith, Stefan Gruber, and more, it touches upon everything from DIY urbanism to consumerism and micro-strategies.

Herzog & De Meuron - Novartis Campus Asklepios 8

Isbn 9783856166663
Publisher Christoph Merian
Idea code 15587
€ 52.70

Directly on the bank of the Rhine, at the north-eastern periphery of the Novartis Campus, is the high-rise building by Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron which forms a link between the Campus and the Rhine promenade. On the side of the building facing the river there is a public restaurant which functions like a huge plinth for the towering building. The building at Asklepios 8 doubles, so to speak, the building height envisaged in the master plan by means of a three-storey volume with a clear structure visible from the outside. What seems like innumerable rounds supports staggered downwards cause the façade to appear filigree and to shimmer optically.

Rahul Mehrotra - Novartis Campus Virchow 16

Isbn 9783856166670
Publisher Christoph Merian
Idea code 15586
€ 47.30

The building at Virchow 16 was designed by the Indian architect and urban planner Rahul Mehrotra, who teaches at Harvard Graduate School of Design in the United States. The building houses both laboratories and offices. The laboratories require higher ceilings than the rooms dedicated to administration. An atrium with greenery inside addresses these differences, balancing them out with staircases and through-views that visually link the various levels. The western façade facing the Campus also has greenery and thus anticipates the green inside. An impressive installation by Pipilotti Rist is to be found on the granite floor of the entrance.

Werklust Biography Of A Landscape

Isbn 9789462082441
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 15640
€ 53.50

For 40 years, and with a sense of fascination, Theo Baart has been photographing the fate of the landscape of his youth: the area near Schiphol Airport. Nowhere else in the Netherlands is the landscape under so much pressure; all the themes relating to spatial planning come to a head in this region, in a magnified form. He talks about the demolition of the suburb in the context of the plans for the centre of Hoofddorp, and the flooding of a once-empty polder with major infrastructure. Theo Baart photographs the everyday landscape as a mirror of Dutch culture. 'Werklust' shows how the Dutch landscape has been completely turned on its head over the past 40 years, based on a single example.

The Rooted City

Isbn 9789075271935
Publisher Blauwdruk
Idea code 15636
€ 20.00

Cities and landscape are inextricably linked. Without landscape there is no city and without city there is no landscape as we know it. Nowadays it is hard to hold on to the distinction between landscape and city – the whole planet has become urban. This raises new questions. How can cities defend themselves against climate change? How can you guarantee the supply of drinking water in cities with tens of millions of residents? What can be done about smog choking metropoles? Is food security possible if there is less and less fertile farmland? Rooted City investigates these questions by means of an essay and examples of thirty European cities.
