Scheltens & Abbenes: Separate As One

Isbn
Publisher Epoi
Idea code 16062
€ 25.00

The art photography couple Maurice Scheltens and Liesbeth Abbenes have worked unwaveringly for nearly fifteen years carving out their identity as image makers. Whether commissioned by brands or magazines, their oeuvre is persistently autonomous, wherein only the actual characteristics of the objects in front of their camera steer their creative process. For Epoi, a new genuine leather bag brand made in Japan, Scheltens & Abbenes created a series of six photographic works using the leather parts of bags yet to be made. Printed on large-format, ultra-thick card and presented as individual plates, the images strongly follow in the tradition of Calder’s mobiles.

These portraits of post-war Dutch teenagers address the intangible theme of youth in a touching and personal way. Ulay, What Is This Thing Called Polaroid?

Isbn 9789492095138
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 16054
€ 19.90

Focusing on the intimate relationship that visual and performance artist Ulay has developed with Polaroid photography in his oeuvre, this book begins with his first explorations of the medium in the 1970s, which resulted in radical and ground-breaking work that merged the bodies of artist and camera in the creation of the image. The unique and immediate character of each snapshot is a perfect match with his performance and body art. Besides providing insights on Ulay’s artistic approaches with Polaroid, the book delves into the historical background and technological innovations of the medium, its specific chemical processes, and the challenges of conserving Polaroid prints.

Jenny Kaellman: The Rectangle's Sharp Stare

Isbn 9789188031235
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 16002
€ 38.50

As a starting point for this new body of work, Swedish photographer Jenny Källman initiated an exploration of prison spaces from an immediately physical vantage point. The title of this series, ‘Lounge’, is an ironic take on the indefinite time and shared social environment of the prison as an institution, and a number of the images were made in a centre for young offenders. Working not only in still photography, but also with sound, music, and the moving image, Källman opens these usually closed spaces up to a mode of representation that diverges from strictly documentary, applying abstraction as a way to describe the complexities inherent in confinement.

Michael Wolf - Hong Kong Assemblage Deconstructed

Isbn 9783941825895
Publisher Peperoni Books
Idea code 15713
€ 30.15

The small back alleys of Hong Kong are utilised by its residents in various ways, often serving as places of respite within the relentless rhythm of this densely packed metropolis. For some time, Michael Wolf has been exploring this rich, ever-changing vernacular world, focusing in particular on the interplay between the myriad different objects found there. In a celebration of the accidental artistry of everyday life, he deconstructed one of these object assemblages, photographing each of its composite parts – coat hangers, plastic ribbon, umbrellas, metal clips, etc. – in his studio. Wolf gives these utilitarian objects a significance symbolic of the individual occupying the city.

Peter Truschner - Bangkok Struggle

Isbn 9783941825888
Publisher Peperoni Books
Idea code 15714
€ 40.20

Bangkok. This name is loaded. Sex tourism, night markets, construction and high-tech boom. Not of any interest for Peter Truschner. When he was in Bangkok in 2011 and 2013 for several months, he stayed in the neighbourhoods where traders, craftsmen and workers live, people whose lives are dominated by hard, strenuous work without any prospect of prosperity. Work, eat, drink, sleep - often without a solid roof over the head - an endless cycle. Truschner does not shoot explicit pictures of the misery, but simply the everyday life of these people whose trust he has won. A daily life, that millions of people share, not only in Bangkok.

Hennric Jokeit - Negative Vision

Isbn 9783941825918
Publisher Peperoni Books
Idea code 16097
€ 36.20

“We can think about the negative without being able to see it.” Thus begins photographer Hennric Jokeit’s series of negative images, which challenges our eyes and brain to focus, taking time to adapt and virtually decipher what we are seeing. Confronted with negative depictions of urban and natural landscapes, interior scenes, and buildings and objects, the viewer is asked to concentrate on the singularity of each image, to translate dark into light and vice versa. As such, it allows us to focus more clearly on aspects like composition and formal arrangement within the frame of the image, levels of comprehension that are often overlooked. With an essay by Philip Ursprung.

Fiona Amundsen: The Imperial Body

Isbn 9780473325756
Publisher Split/fountain
Idea code 16057
€ 2.00

Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine is a complex phenomenon within a local and international sociocultural psyche. It presents an almost contradictory position around the role that memorial, memory, honour, and site have in relationship to the trauma and death embedded within layered military histories and experiences of World War II. Fiona Amundsen’s visual arts project takes the shrine as its focus, presenting a series of present-day photographs with fragments of historical images and documents representing worship and nationalism associated with WWII. In this way, she critically explores the complexities of archives linking to traumatic and nationalist histories.

Charlotte Lybeer: Epidermis I I

Isbn 9789490800406
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 16023
€ 25.00

The tension between the real world and the parallel world is intensified in these portraits of morphsuits. The design and theatricality of public space extends into the private realm. Self-design is a statement in the virtual arena that is the Internet. How do I present myself to the other’s gaze? Which lifestyle do I use to construe an imaginary identity? In their Zentai suits these morphers succeed in escaping from the obligatory, omnipresent perception, the pressure of being seen, all the time, everywhere. They are encapsulated and unrecognisable in a completely enclosed form, vanishing into a trans-human identity that suddenly infiltrates reality in the place where Lybeer portrays them.

Dominique Somers, 00a

Isbn 9789490800383
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 15765
€ 25.00

Dominique Somers’ work '00A' consists of a compilation of found images. The title of the series refers to the starting-point markings, printed between the sprocket holes on the leader of a 35-mm photographic film. Somers has been collecting the first, automatic exposures made on this 00A frame of the negative strip for years. They are the result of a photographic practice that in today’s digital age has almost become a form of archaeology: when positioning a roll of analogue film in the camera, one has to release the shutter a few times and wind a couple of frames forward to reach the starting position (1A) of the unexposed part of the spooled film. It is precisely these throwaway shots that Somers has appropriated.

Peter Winston Ferretto Place/ Seoul

Isbn 9788998143305
Publisher Propaganda
Idea code 16028
€ 19.20

Peter Winston Ferretto worked in the office of Herzog & de Meuron prior to his appointment as Professor of Architecture at Seoul National University in 2009. The same year, he founded his own architectural office based in Seoul and London. This book is an examination of the South Korean capital, which he describes as a “city of discontinuities, a sequence of fragments that collectively converge to form an urban settlement set against a dramatic natural backdrop.” With an urban fabric directly connected to its topography, the city is difficult to comprehend at first. Collaborating with a photographer, Ferretto surveys Seoul in a close examination of this urban spectacle.

Yoko Ishii - Dear Deer

Isbn 9784898154267
Publisher Little More
Idea code 16030
€ 18.60

Wild deer inhabit the urban centres of Nara and Miyajima in Japan. Long revered at Nara’s Kasuga Shrine, the animals have been designated a national treasure and are protected. The local government in Miyajima, however, has prohibited the feeding of deer in an attempt to separate them from the human habitat. Yet, some sympathetic people still feed the deer, which are confronted with a shortage of food due to an increasing population. Car accidents caused by the animals have also increased, compounding this serious issue. In her series of photographs, Yoko Ishii shows the freedom deer have to transgress the boundaries between humans and nature.
