Dick Bruna: Zwarte Beertjes

Isbn 4573245340010
Publisher Free Ride
Idea code 03627
€ 95.90

Dutch illustrator and graphic designer Dick Bruna is famed for his character Miffy. Prior to creating the cute rabbit, however, his career saw him designing paperback covers. Between the ages of 28 and 48, Bruna created as many as two thousand of these, each marked by his signature “Black Bear”, which in turn would be the foundation for his later work as an illustrator. In this reprint of a substantial overview of Bruna’s paperback covers, edited by Koichi Yanagimoto, the selection of designs is wonderfully diverse, but also limited to those that most resemble his present style. Among the series represented are Jean Bruce, Charteris, and Cheyney, plus science fiction, posters, and more.

To celebrate the fifth edition of What Design Can Do, a selection of projects demonstrating the power of design was made. As a platform centred around a two-day conference in Amsterdam, What Design Can Do highlights the power of design as a means to resolution among both professionals and the wider public. Calling upon designers to use their skills to make the world a little better, hundreds of ideas have been generated, and the best are in this book. Scheltens & Abbenes: Separate As One

Isbn
Publisher Epoi
Idea code 16062
€ 25.00

The art photography couple Maurice Scheltens and Liesbeth Abbenes have worked unwaveringly for nearly fifteen years carving out their identity as image makers. Whether commissioned by brands or magazines, their oeuvre is persistently autonomous, wherein only the actual characteristics of the objects in front of their camera steer their creative process. For Epoi, a new genuine leather bag brand made in Japan, Scheltens & Abbenes created a series of six photographic works using the leather parts of bags yet to be made. Printed on large-format, ultra-thick card and presented as individual plates, the images strongly follow in the tradition of Calder’s mobiles.

Based on an exhibition of Masaaki Hiromura’s personal repertoire as a designer and architect, this handsome volume offers insight into his design process and the thought that goes into a design. He addresses questions of whether new designs are of added value, or if such a design is necessary, and thereby also considers the negative aspects and potential drawbacks. It features numerous works and projects on every scale by Hiromura in its analysis, from wayfinding, signage, and labels, to domestic objects and entire interior design schemes. Richly supplemented with his own writings on the nature of design, the book includes an in-depth interview with the architect.

Design For People

Isbn 9781938922855
Publisher Metropolis Books
Idea code
€ 44.55

Most design books focus on outcome rather than on process. Scott Stowell's 'Design for People' is groundbreaking in its approach to design literature. Focusing on 12 design projects by Stowell's design firm, Open, the volume offers a sort of oral history as told by those involved with each project – designers, clients, interns, collaborators and those who interact with the finished product on a daily basis. In addition to the case studies, the book features texts from influential figures in the design world, including Alice Twemlow, chair and cofounder of the School of Visual Arts' MFA Design Criticism program.

Putting product service systems at the programme’s core requires designers to think and work more broadly and strategically in response to societal challenges. This instalment concludes a series of ten publications on the Readership in Strategic Creativity at Design Academy Eindhoven on its contribution to CRISP.

Sissi - Anato-My Lessons

Isbn 9788875705541
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 16107
€ 40.30

Italian artist Sissi launches her artistic research from a recurrent and almost scientific analysis of the human body, borrowing elements from disciplines such as archaeology and anatomy, to reach an imaginative dimension capable of giving things new and unexpected forms and aspects. The method behind ‘Parallel Anatomy’, the art project that Sissi has been developing for years, is laid out in this artist’s book, which is read both in relation to her work and to that of the great anatomists who opened windows to the subcutaneous basement. It offers a way of speaking about emotions as intangible organs that, in order to take on a body, inhabit other organs and modify them.

Yoko Ishii - Dear Deer

Isbn 9784898154267
Publisher Little More
Idea code 16030
€ 18.60

Wild deer inhabit the urban centres of Nara and Miyajima in Japan. Long revered at Nara’s Kasuga Shrine, the animals have been designated a national treasure and are protected. The local government in Miyajima, however, has prohibited the feeding of deer in an attempt to separate them from the human habitat. Yet, some sympathetic people still feed the deer, which are confronted with a shortage of food due to an increasing population. Car accidents caused by the animals have also increased, compounding this serious issue. In her series of photographs, Yoko Ishii shows the freedom deer have to transgress the boundaries between humans and nature.
