Isbn 9784898154311
Publisher Little More
Idea code 15757
€ 97.25

Japan is home to a centuries-old tradition of folk performing arts, here captured in a marvellous portrait series by Yusuke Nishimura. The traditions have changed very little since their beginnings, and the various dance groups’ performances are a reflection of their geography, occupations, diets, and customs. Besides Shishimai (Deer Dance), Toramai (Tiger Dance), Kagura (Sacred Music and Dance), festivals and events with agricultural significance are also found throughout Japan, such as Taueodori (Rice Planting Dance). Nishimura photographs the costumed figures against black backgrounds, emphasising the vibrant colours and craftsmanship of each style of dress.

Publisher Thoth
Idea code 16188

Published in conjunction with a large exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum of furniture and other interior objects designed in the style of the Amsterdam School, this book sheds light on the movement’s influence in fields other than its widely known style of early 20th-century architecture. With its captivating and expressive forms, the Amsterdam School was a phenomenon unique to the Netherlands, and its influence can be seen in an array of clocks, ceramics, lamps, textiles, stained glass, posters, and more. With a critical analysis of the school’s aesthetics and designers, such as Michel de Klerk, and essays detailing its commercial reception, international context, and preservation.

Unlocked

Publisher Atopos
Idea code 16132
€ 49.70

The new publication from ATOPOS attempts to “unlock” the depiction of the naked body in the post-photographic, digital era. Based on an original idea and research by Vassilis Zidianakis, the book’s more than 500 pages constitutes a recording of a new visual language that has emerged from contemporary digital platforms and other forms of social media. From Ren Hang’s raw, avant-garde photography and the hedonistic, vibrant images of Maisie Cousins, to Robert Wilson’s unconventional video portraits of Lady Gaga, the volume presents works by 145 international photographers and artists, including Cheyenne Sophia, Jacopo Benassi, and Kostis Fokas.

Uta Eisenreich James Langdon A Play

Isbn 9789491843600
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 16199
€ 14.00

This diminutive book is published in relation to a series of performances and an exhibition: ‘Things on a Table’ by Uta Eisenreich and Eva Meyer-Keller with Katrin Hahner at Pact Zollverein, Essen, and ‘A Play’ by Eisenreich with Meyer-Keller and James Langdon, shown at Ellen de Bruijne Projects, Amsterdam. The departure point is Gertrude Stein’s modernist text, ‘Objects Lie on a Table’ (1922). The exhibition takes form as a mural conceived with graphic designer James Langdon. Unlike the experience of the stage piece, where elements appear in a timeline, the book offers an excess of elements – signs, colours, fragments, and texts – to assemble and construct meaning.

Publisher Rollo Press
Idea code 16183
€ 32.00

A parrot can be trained to repeat the sounds we make when we speak. But what does a parrot say? 'Taxidermy for Language-Animals' examines language fragments from different practices – philosophy, literature, visual art – by exploiting some of our linguistic habits and tools. This book includes examples of ordinary language trapped in images. Games we play with language and games language plays with us are introduced. Like language itself, language-games are based on perception, habit and memory and are played in collaboration with others.

Richard Prince's Publications Bibliotheque D'un Amateur

Isbn 9788897753117
Publisher Viaindustriae
Idea code 16159
€ 26.90

This diminutive, eponymous catalogue to an exhibition, curated by Christophe Daviet-Thery and taking place in Spoleto and Paris in 2012, seems to draw up an inventory of a “book-lover’s library”. But on closer inspection, the individual in question is the same person who designed these books: Richard Prince. Through their varied depictions of miscellaneous publications, Prince’s artist’s books and catalogues have gradually themselves become collection catalogues of other books. The phenomenon reflects an urge to make public one’s private interior, and by extension, one’s personal life and inspirations. The publication includes detailed bibliographical notes and two critical essays.
