Bloodywood - Ghanaian Film Posters From The Collection Of Mandy Elsas

Isbn 9789082515305
Publisher Vintage Voodoo
Idea code 16277
€ 64.95

This large book features an astonishing selection of Ghanaian hand-painted film posters from the collection of Mandy Elsas, a Dutch merchant dedicated to seeking out and preserving this disappearing facet of Ghana’s art historical heritage. With reproductions of almost 200 posters, it also provides an in-depth look at everyday culture through short biographies of artists, writings by specialists in the field, and a foreword by Ablade Glover, perhaps today’s most preeminent Ghanaian artist. The images are often graphic, supernatural, and violent, the posters powerful, vibrant, humorous, and frightening. Especially of interest are the local takes on Nigerian and Ghanaian films, which are sometimes interpreted up to six different versions of one film.

Strange Design: From Objects To Behaviours

Isbn 9782917053263
Publisher It: Editions
Idea code 16272
€ 32.25

In recent years, strange – ambiguous, dysfunctional, enigmatic, and complicated – objects have emerged in the world of design. These objects are based on an approach that has been called anti-design, radical, conceptual, or critical design – a speculative design that instead of offering solutions raises questions. Design that is not subject to the imperatives of the power structures of society, but is instead critical. Via a strategy of modifying objects away from their usual forms and utilitarian functions, this design evokes unusual uses and behaviours. With contributions by Gijs Bakker, Jurgen Bey, Bless, Didier Faustino, Alessandro Mendini, and Ugo La Pietra among others.

Science Of The Secondary 7: Egg

Isbn 9789810984588
Publisher Atelier Hoko
Idea code 16256
€ 18.70

"Ever since the egg has been perverted as a rich and readily available source of food for human beings, we have not thought much of it beyond its role in our diet. An altogether loathsome person was once overheard commenting (with complete disregard for the minuscule strength of a chick) that the brittleness of eggshells is meant for the convenience of the human hand. To allow a faint glimmer in the gloom of ignorance, we must begin to become conscious of the subtleties within each egg…" 'Science of the Secondary: Egg’ is the seventh edition in the series of ongoing research conceived and developed by Atelier HOKO.

Takashi Suzuki: Bau

Isbn 9784865871005
Publisher Amana
Idea code 16203
€ 5.00

Born in Kyoto, Takashi Suzuki graduated from the Photography Department of the Art Institute of Boston. In his most recent series, he attempts to discover how many different sculptural forms can be created using assemblages of particular mundane items – in this case, colourful sponges of all shapes and sizes. Set against a black background, the constructions signal a differentiation of context, introducing potentially unexpected propositions. Rather than concerning himself with “what” the actual photographic subject is, Suzuki’s interest shifts towards “how” that subject is perceived. His core motivation is exploring new definitions of how we see photography.

Edward Johnston - Writing & Illuminating & Lettering

Isbn 9781526201010
Publisher D&b Books
Idea code 16221
€ 36.90

Primarily a calligrapher by trade, Edward Johnston is in fact a relatively unknown great name in the design and typography of the 20th century. Unbeknownst to many, 100 years ago he created the typeface of the London Underground, so familiar to millions of the city’s residents, commuters, and visitors. The influence of this typeface was considerable. Although the two areas of Johnston’s expertise initially seem poles apart, the parallels become clearer the more one learns about his techniques and the man himself. This book offers an in-depth analysis of his life’s work, underlining Johnston’s dedication to the written word and his steadfast preservation of its forms.

Knowledge may be safeguarded, expanded, experienced, or transferred, while the space can be either actual or virtual. Order And Collapse - The Lives Of Archives

Isbn 9789188031020
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 16267
€ 27.50

The normative order and authoritarian use of conventional archives has long been criticised. This volume investigates the digitally informed transformation and multiplication of archives today, in conjunction with the increase in both accessibility and the amount of data produced, stored, and circulated. Despite improved search capabilities, documents, photographs, and other images are in danger of vanishing. Yet new knowledge, connotations, and materialities are also emerging. Through various texts and artworks, a selection of contemporary artistic and research-based approaches to existing archives, the act of collecting images, and creating new archives is represented.
