Order And Collapse - The Lives Of Archives

Isbn 9789188031020
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 16267
€ 27.50

The normative order and authoritarian use of conventional archives has long been criticised. This volume investigates the digitally informed transformation and multiplication of archives today, in conjunction with the increase in both accessibility and the amount of data produced, stored, and circulated. Despite improved search capabilities, documents, photographs, and other images are in danger of vanishing. Yet new knowledge, connotations, and materialities are also emerging. Through various texts and artworks, a selection of contemporary artistic and research-based approaches to existing archives, the act of collecting images, and creating new archives is represented.

Annika Von Hausswolff - Grand Theory Hotel

Isbn 9789188031273
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 16268
€ 38.50

The essence of Swedish visual artist Annika von Hausswolff’s oeuvre lies in her fascination with photography’s documentary power and ability to create scenes charged with clues to what may have happened. Time and again she returns to certain themes in her work, such as patriarchal structures, criminology, and the subconscious. Her images are full of references and her staged scenes destabilise the boundary between fact and fiction. This book, published on the occasion of an exhibition curated by Dragana Vujanovic at the Hasselblad Center, presents a decade of Von Hausswolff’s work since 2006. Included are numerous reproductions and an interview with the artist.

Linda Rampell: The Shopmodern Condition

Isbn 9789163900075
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 16212
€ 38.50

In her previous work, Swedish design theorist and critic Linda Rampell has concluded that “the only -ism after postmodernism is consumerism”. The postmodern condition has become a shopmodern condition in which aesthetics and economics have merged into aesthetonomics, which defines an economy of evaluating how much a being is worth. This book explores how design consumption is no longer a simple question of making purchases and consuming goods. Instead, it means to become consumed by images, wherein even identities are consumed. Designdarwinism™ in this kind of image-culture is a life-and-death struggle for self-improvement.

The Kingdoms Of Elgaland- Vargaland

Isbn 9789188031280
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 16374
€ 42.90

Proclaimed in 1992 by Swedish artists Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Leif Elggren, the Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland (KREV) consist of all border territories: geographical, mental, and digital. Although there is nothing new in questioning the supposed neutrality and scientific rigour of geographical lines, which legitimise frontiers as containers of those ideologies linked to the territoriality of the nation-state, various recent developments have pointed to the urgency of finding new ways to locate or map an increasing number of intermediate spaces arising from the hybridisation, superimposition, and crossing of peoples flowing between more stable territories. With contributions by Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Magali Arriola, Adrian Notz, and Håkan Nilsson.

Katinka Bock Any

Isbn 9789491843624
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 16252
€ 25.00

For this book, offered in conjunction with a 2016 exhibition at Kunstmuseum Luzern, several series by German artist Katinka Bock are featured, including ‘Seechamäleon’, ‘Winter’, and ‘Formen dieses Meeres’. Bock’s often inscrutable artworks, whether photographs of water, gravel and dried leaves, or oxidised surfaces, nevertheless retain a haptic quality, something which translates especially well into her objects. Besides many reproductions of artworks, the book includes installation views and a text by Thomas Boutoux, wherein he considers how we experience an artist’s work differently in the context of an exhibition opening, a condition that many find unfavourable.

Bart Lodewijks Rio De Janeiro Drawings

Isbn 9789491843655
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 16290
€ 19.95

The work of Dutch artist Bart Lodewijks takes him out of the studio and into the city, its streets and neighbourhoods. His enigmatic yet beautiful repetitions of straight chalk lines, drawn using a spirit level on walls, buildings, stairways, and sidewalks, are a fleeting testament to the challenges and interactions the artist experiences during his working process. In 2010 and 2013, Lodewijks spent some months in Rio de Janeiro, searching for suitable locations for his drawings. Local residents led him to places that were scenes of everyday life, mundane yet with a special character. Much of the time he frequented a small favela, about which he has written a story relating the life he discovered there.

Bart Lodewijks Nieuw Texas/klein Chicago

Isbn 9789491843617
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 16292
€ 15.00

The work of Dutch artist Bart Lodewijks is manifested in the city, throughout its streets and neighbourhoods, where it brings unexpected encounters with residents, housing associations, and public officials. Lodewijks describes his chalk lines of varying thicknesses and arrangements as a “gentle approach”, one that is “not intended as a fleeting touch, as something transient”. This book documents the chalk drawings he made in two neighbourhoods of Genk, Belgium, a project for which he also agreed to integrate a clean-up campaign. When the markings stubbornly persisted on a particular block of flats, it offered the artist the opportunity for personal reflection about his work.

The fifth volume in the ‘Companion’ series documents a project at Kunstverein München by Antwerp-based food and film collective Otarkino, which presented three “film dinners” where narratives bounced from the plate to the screen and back again in sensuous interaction. Five films by directors Sergei Parajanov, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Sharon Lockhart, Shûji Terayama, and Jonas Mekas formed the integral backdrop to well-timed tastes and textures, evocative occurrences, and lingering fragrances, all carefully choreographed to arrive on cue. Otarkino consists of film curator Vincent Stroep and food collective Otark Productions (Hadas Cna’ani and Charlotte Koopman).

Publisher Danilo Montanari
Idea code 16307
€ 26.90

Luigi Bonotto dedicated himself to keeping the work of the artists of Fluxus and Experimental Poetry alive, and to preserving, cataloguing, and promoting their poetry, music, and work, which was strongly influenced by John Cage and the key concept of his theoretical framework, indeterminacy. Published on the occasion of an exhibition curated by Patrizio Peterlini and Walter Rovere, with the collaboration of Giorgio Maffei, this catalogue delves deeply into this aspect of the Fluxus network. Rife with illustrations, the materials of the collection, as well as the movement and its history, are analysed in scholarly essays by Anna Cestelli Guidi, Alison Knowles, and the curators.

Philip Van Isacker - De Sculptura

Isbn 9789082139969
Publisher Grafische Cel

€ 26.90

Using found texts, images, and technologies (such as slide projectors, typewriters, typographical elements, and relief printing), Czech artist Pavel Büchler distils new meaning from the everyday. With lightness and precision, he appropriates objects from their usual functions and places them in sober compositions, making references to art history, literature, and philosophy in the process. This is the first monograph to offer a complete overview of Büchler’s body of work, ranging from his early collages to the “action activities” and “artist books”. Includes essays by Pavlina Morganova and Philippe Pirotte, plus an interview with the artist by Lisa Le Feuvre.

Thierry Lagrange - Look Space! A Story Of Analogous Spaces

Isbn 9789082139976
Publisher Grafische Cel
Idea code 16274
€ 25.00

Architectural engineer Thierry Lagrange incorporates both his formal training and photography in his ongoing research on analogous spaces. This publication examines the various approaches to these spaces. The term “analogous spaces” highlights the analogies existing between the ways in which knowledge is processed in different types of space. Knowledge may be safeguarded, expanded, experienced, or transferred, while the space can be either actual or virtual. It refers to a spatiality that is technological, a product of communication media, and as such an integral part of our contemporary living experience, addressed in theoretical writings, workshops, and case studies.

Thomas Min: The Perfect Document

Isbn 9789490800420
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 16402
€ 25.00

Every conceivable object once likely had a photographic companion, either as a document or an artistic interpretation. On the one hand, it is a lovely and even comforting idea that things are given a second life, yet it is also a depressing thought that reveals something about our obsession to portray. Through the camera’s flattening gesture, which transforms the object into an easily comprehensible image, another conflict originates. Simply put, it is an illusion to think that the viewer can become familiar with the object through its picture. Thomas Min plays with this idea through his sterile photographic reproductions of various objects from catalogues or sold at auction houses.

From a background as an illustrator, comic book artist and graphic designer Søren Behncke changed his focus in 2002 and began working solely with painting and sculpture. Initially Behncke only used recycled cardboard as his main material and soon he became known as 'Papfar,' which directly translate as ‘Cardboard Dad’ – but actually is also an affectionate term for stepfather in Danish. He distinguished himself by creating spectacular sculptural interventions and hit-and-run actions in public space. Behncke has subsequently added numerous methods and media to his oeuvre and this book provides an overview of his work with painting, collage, photography, printmaking, film, embroidery and sculpture over the past 14 years.

Marco Tirelli

Isbn 9788874624447
Publisher Quodlibet
Idea code 16163
€ 38.70

This publication coincides with an exhibition of work by Marco Tirelli at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi. Together, the minimal works reveal the impalpable nature of the concept of border through the interaction of light of shadow. Against a monochrome background wall, Tirelli’s paintings “drill through” space, remarks Valerio Magrelli, and recall the conceptual legacy of such artists as Sol LeWitt and Donald Judd. The forms on his monumental canvases are rendered with a soft sfumato that the artist has perfected, creating careful gradations of charcoal on paper. With several critical essays and many illustrated works.

€ 27.95

Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005) is primarily known as the co-founder of the international Cobra group and as the initiator and maker of the New Babylon project. This publication sheds light, for the first time, on a third influential period in his artistic practice, during which he made the journey from Cobra to New Babylon, continually reinventing himself along the way. During the 1950s Constant was searching for new means to contribute, as an artist, to the reconstruction of society in the wake of the devastation of the Second World War. Significant developments in urbanism and technology were reflected in his work.

De Rossaert & Zijn Passanten

Isbn 9789491819612
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 16302
€ 39.90

Henteko Na Shunga

Isbn 9784861525384
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 16147
€ 21.20

This densely illustrated book offers an exhaustive pictorial history of shunga, a Japanese term for erotic art. Most shunga are a type of ukiyo-e, produced between the 16th and 19th centuries and usually executed in woodblock print format. Almost all ukiyo-e artists created examples of shunga at some point in their careers, and the images vary widely in their depictions of sexuality, involving not only heterosexual couplings, but also massively exaggerated genitalia, animals and supernatural beasts, and orgies. Shunga was probably enjoyed by both men and women of all classes, and followed the aesthetics of contemporary urban life in the artists’ appeal to the rising chōnin class.

Fausto Gilberti - Marcel Duchamp

“Was this Mr Duchamp crazy?” and “How did he come up with the idea of putting a urinal in an art show?” Well... take it from me, Mr Duchamp wasn’t crazy. He was very intelligent, witty and full of ideas. He was an artist!” Mr Duchamp’s artworks were strange and unusual. They were not paintings nor were they sculptures but they were undeniably art. An artist who raised the bar in art, while laughing and joking. Following books dedicated to Piero Manzoni, Yves Klein and Jackson Pollock, Fausto Gilberti’s collection of books, which intelligently and amusingly tell us about the work of the great protagonists of contemporary art, continues to grow.
