Batia Suter - Parallel Encyclopedia #2

Isbn 9789491843761
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 16498
€ 60.00

Batia Suter’s work intuitively situates found images in new contexts to provoke surprising reactions and significative possibilities. This volume follows on from the first ‘Parallel Encyclopedia’, published in 2007. Underlying themes of Suter’s practice are the “iconification” and “immunogenicity” of old images, and the circumstances by which they become charged with new associative values. “In my work, I collect groups of images based on various themes and characteristics, and I investigate how they can manipulate each other, depending on where and how they are placed. In the process of making this book, narrative lines unfolded before my eyes as I shifted images around.”

Misha De Ridder - Falaise

Isbn 9789491843723
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 16514
€ 40.05

The work of Misha de Ridder in ’Falaise', which consists of abstractions of the chalky cliff face in Normandy, France, harnesses the revelatory power of photography to capture the continuous metamorphosis of the cliffs. Once a celebrated holiday destination, where Monet is believed to have developed Impressionism, the area has become forgotten as it is encroached upon by the sea, which is gradually swallowing its surroundings.

Flaneur Issue 06: Boulevard Ring, Moscow

Isbn 9772196537004
Publisher Edition Messner
Idea code 16537
€ 15.00

Diverging from the principle of focussing on one street, Flaneur succumbs to Moscow’s underlying cosmological blueprint: the city is in this issue made up of orbits. The Boulevard Ring is the first orbit and on it five bubbles are chosen that encircle the Kremlin. These bubbles are not just places – they are constellations, principles, motifs for exploration. Featuring Arbatskaya Square, Pushkinskaya Square, as well as a personal journey of Ksenia Golubovich. Photographer Stas Galaktionov explores the underground vibes of one of the last remaining squats in the neighbourhood. Moscow Waters has a contribution by Grashina Gabelmann and artist Judith Sönnicken considers the mental architecture of disappearing and reappearing structures. The last chapter considers the future as much as the possible futures of the past, the crossroads that haven’t been taken, through a collection of poems, short stories and visuals.

Ed Panar: Animals That Saw Me

Isbn 9780989785976
Publisher The Ice Plant
Idea code 16560
€ 31.90

Animals That Saw Me, Volume Two presents a new collection of photographs from the observational wanderings of Ed Panar. This body of work, encompassing recent pictures and newly discovered gems from Panar’s vast back catalogue, records a series of brief, often strangely amusing moments in which nonhuman species (mammal, reptile, bird or insect) seem to behold the human photographer. Edited for the viewer’s maximum delight, the photos convey a whimsical concept with surprisingly complex ramifications under the surface.

Hanne Van Der Woude - Vivace (Reprint, English)

Isbn 9789490119379
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 15513
€ 30.00

For five years Hanne van der Woude shared life's joys and sorrows with an older married couple and a brother: people who never lost touch with their creativity or non-conformist disposition. Van der Woude is focussing on Emmy: the 83-year old artist who lives in an old school building in the Betuwe. Two central elements of Emmy's personallity are an inexhaustible admiration for nature and the urge to collect. Van der Woude used photography, film and documents such as sketchbooks and notebooks, in order to show Emmy's unique but also very familiar world. 'Vivace' is a moving portrait which touches on several important topics in society, such as intergenerational friendship, creativity, the art of living, independence and care.

Judith Jockel - You Breathe From A Garden In Your Neck

Isbn 9789490119447
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 16544
€ 35.00

This is a book which uses photography to get a grip on something which is lost. In 2011 Judith's best friend Mieke died; they had shared a friendship and a studio with a garden in Amsterdam Oost. After her death, Judith uses Mieke's analogue Cambo 8 x 10-inch camera to photograph every flower in their shared garden. The camera has a technical malfunction, but Mieke kept using it. The result is a collection of photographs that show the flowers, but the camera is also present because of light flares on the negative.

Jaya Pelupessy - Set-Put-Run

Isbn 9789490119430
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 16545
€ 30.00

Jaya Pelupessy uses photography to investigate the medium’s status. Central to his work are the processes that lead to autonomous images; an examination of to what extent the process itself and the visibility of that process strengthens, invalidates, or delivers new autonomous images. Countless “loops” within his own work emerge, within which reproductions are again reproduced. For this publication, produced in collaboration with graphic designer Hans Gremmen, the making of the book is taken as a starting point. Through a process that entails using five cameras and immediate processing, a document with unexpectedly combined layers is created.

Act Of Love : A Visual Dictionary Of Animal Courtship

Isbn 9784990856403
Publisher Human Research Inc
Idea code 16463
€ 103.45

Some say that humans are afraid to love. Although we, too, are animals, when we observe the spectacularly diverse ways in which wild animals of all types court each other, it shows us that we as humans have a great deal to learn from them. Produced by Sagami Rubber Industries, founded in 1934 as Japan’s first manufacturer of natural latex condoms, this book is the outcome of a project to create an illustrated encyclopaedia of courtship behaviours in the animal kingdom. Documenting more than 70 inhabitants of land, sea, and sky with concise texts and factual information, it offers a glimpse into those lesser-known aspects of the natural world you’ve always wondered about.

Lara Gasparotto - Ask The Dusk

Isbn 9789491819681
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 16534
€ 34.90

The young Belgian photographer Lara Gasparotto has made her name with a quickly developed and spontaneous style, by which she documents her own life. In her words, she concocts an “autobiography which holds the middle between dream and reality.” Young people are often her subjects, yet she also photographs landscapes and interiors, and her keen vision is permeated with an atmosphere of beauty and intimacy. Gasparotto’s love of the countryside where she grew up, and to which she often returns, is also readily apparent. With an introduction by Italian art critic Francesca Alfano Miglietti, this publication presents her new work from the past two years.

Laura van Severen - Land - On the Brink of Some Formidably Complex Matter

Isbn 9789492051202
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code
€ 27.00

'LAND' is a construction, or one could say, a destruction of a landscape that once was or will be. Rather than showing the observable sites of talc stone quarries in the Pyrenees, Van Severen aims to transmit the energy of its transformation. The human intervention, either subtle or defining, characterizes her images. By using de/con-struction as a photographic technique, 'LAND' sprouts a new world, a landscape detached from its original context, where notions of distance, size and scale become relative and elusive.

Paul Hutchinson - Wildlife Photography

Isbn 9783941644885
Publisher The Green Box
Idea code
€ 9.70

Paul Hutchinson looks at an underground station in the Neukölln district of Berlin. Wildlife Photography is a playful journey into an every-day appearance of exoticism. In 2014 the interior design of the U-Bahnhof Hermannstraße had suddenly been overhauled: aiming to avoid further potential spaces for graffiti, the train station was redesigned into a lively jungle scape. In this publication images from the U-Bahnhof are juxtaposed with seemingly ‘real exotic’ pictures. A fake jungle is placed next to a real one.

Maria Friberg: Black Balance

Isbn 9789188031358
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 16501
€ 42.90

Swedish artist and photographer Maria Friberg’s work is characterised by her great interest in societal issues and a desire to depict the phenomena of contemporary life. Narratives about man’s place in a world where the power of nature and culture is difficult to master emerge in her carefully staged images, the production of which often involves set designers, craftsmen, and others. References to art history, and painting in particular, appear in Friberg’s work, along with enigmatic spaces and an aesthetically pleasant play of light. This book gathers diverse examples from her body of work, telling stories that are both subversive and ambiguous in nature, drawing out our inherent curiosity.

Idea code 16496
€ 40.70

Swedish visual artist and researcher Annica Karlsson Rixon investigates and juxtaposes two coinciding events in this book: the third reading of a bill leading to the adoption of the Russian federal law against “propaganda of non-traditional sexuality among minors” and a women’s camp on a remote island situated somewhere between Moscow and St Petersburg. The photo series depicts the affinity between the women at the camp, for whom the new law could have severe consequences. Insider perspectives of the situation for queer women in Russia are provided through texts and interviews with activists and academics. This publication is part of Rixon’s PhD thesis.
