The Rijksmuseum presents a cookbook in which 50 ingredients that define the Dutch kitchen, from potatoes and seaweed to cod and eel, form the basis for 130 dishes, both traditional and modern. Conceived by culinary journalist Jonah Freud and a team of celebrated and expert chefs from across the Netherlands, including Robert Kranenborg and Jonnie Boer, the recipes are inspired by paintings in the museum’s collection. Printed on paper reminiscent of parchment, this exceptional book was designed by Irma Boom and features hundreds of colourful images of objects from the collection, attesting to this rich culinary history and the prominent role of food and drink in Dutch culture.

Breitner - Girl In A Kimono

Isbn 9789491714740
Publisher Rijksmuseum / Nai010 Publisher
Idea code 16642
€ 20.00

Between 1893 and 1896 George Hendrik Breitner painted thirteen pictures of a girl wearing a red, white, or blue kimono. The canvases are among Breitner's best-known works. The model, Geesje Kwak, was only sixteen years old when she posed for the first time. Her young, innocent face and slender body contribute to the atmosphere of tender sensuality. In 2016 all thirteen versions were shown together for the first time at the Rijksmuseum. This afforded an opportunity to determine the order in which the "kimono girls" were painted. This publication also features the sketches, studies, and photographs that Breitner made of Geesje.

Hercules Segers - Painter Etcher (Plates)

Isbn 9789462083400
Publisher Rijksmuseum/ Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 16652
€ 49.00

This oeuvre catalogue presents a comprehensive overview of Hercules Segers, an artist born in Haarlem and considered one of the most inspired, experimental, and original landscapists of the Dutch Golden Age. Besides being a painter, he was an innovative printmaker whose etchings of landscapes were often printed using coloured ink on coloured paper or cloth, hand-coloured and often cropped to different sizes. Segers also made use of drypoint and a form of aquatint, as well as other effects. Although his surviving paintings are rare, hundreds of prints make up a legacy now compiled and published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Through a variety of imaginary museums, personal collections, and unusual assemblages, it offers a reflection on the impulse to save both the most precious and the apparently valueless, and reveals the devotion with which artists, collectors, scholars, and hoarders have created sanctuaries for endangered images and artifacts. Through works spanning the 20th century, 'The Keeper' tells the stories of various individuals through the objects they chose to safeguard.

Walter Swennen Hic Haec Hoc

Isbn 9789491245169
Publisher Hufkens
Idea code 16600
€ 35.00

Walter Swennen is known for his radical, experimental, and associative approach to painting. A poet before he became a painter, it is no coincidence that Swennen perceives painting to be an act of translation, and that language plays a vital role in his practice. The manner in which he handles motifs – taking them as he finds them, high or low, and manipulating them at will – is akin to a kind of visual poetry that harks back to his earlier career. Freely associative and humorous, Swennen’s paintings explore the relationship between symbols, legibility, meaning, and pictorial treatment. Published on the occasion of an eponymous exhibition at Xavier Hufkens, Brussels.

Conrad Shawcross : Inverted Spires And Descendent Folds

Isbn 9788494509605
Publisher Ivorypress
Idea code 16531
€ 25.85

British artist Conrad Shawcross produces work that explores subjects at the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. The importance of science and its history in the Enlightenment, as well as the artist’s relationship with late Romantic ideas, plays a pivotal role in his oeuvre. Sculptural works of bronze and steel – considered “models” of projects that have already been completed or for large-scale works – are presented here. Shawcross explores the both tetrahedron and the dynamic visual potential of harmonics. The works relate to both architecture and the body, and elicit a subtle line between structure and nature, the metaphysical and the molecular.

€ 39.00

A World Redrawn is an exploration by the artist Zoe Beloff of Sergei Eisenstein and Bertolt Brecht’s experiences in Hollywood in the 1930s and ‘40s, what their time in Hollywood meant to them then and what it might mean to us now. Beloff focuses on two unrealized films written during this time: “Glass House” by Eisenstein and “A Model Family” by Brecht. The book reproduces many documents from the period, including a selection of previously unpublished drawings by Eisenstein discovered by Beloff in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art in Moscow and facsimile reproductions of the writings of Eisenstein and Brecht as they contemplate the politics and culture of Hollywood.

Isbn 9788792949714
Publisher Strandberg Publishing
Idea code 16610
€ 41.00

In her foreword, Danish designer Astrid Krogh writes, “My work is about creating landscapes. Making new colours and reflecting intense light through space and across distances is the métier I explore with passion.” She works with the artistic potentials found in modern materials and new technologies, giving them new functional and decorative possibilities to create miraculous forms, lights, and colours. Essential to Krogh’s work is light, both natural and artificial, as well as the interaction with the observer’s own movements and the sense of wonder or surprise that these often subtle changes evoke. Richly illustrated, with contributions by Bradley Quinn, Emily Zilber, and others.

Kimsooja To Breathe Zone Of Zero

Isbn 9788494435485
Publisher Cac Malaga
Idea code 16598
€ 38.75

Kimsooja is a South Korean multi-disciplinary conceptual artist; this catalogue marks the occasion of her site-specific installation and exhibition at CAC Málaga. Considering her country’s rapid transformation into a modern economic powerhouse, Kimsooja’s work addresses complex questions of human existence in this process: essential, fragile aspects of life, such as ritual and ceremony, that are interrupted or sacrificed. In her oeuvre individualism and the role of women point to themes of respect for others and a sense of (global) humanity as she generates convergences that stress human emotions without taking borders or places of origin into account.

Concrete Islands

Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 16609
€ 15.00

‘Concrete Islands’, an exhibition at the Kayne Griffin Corcoran Gallery, Los Angeles, offers a poetic investigation into the intersection of words and objects. Inspired by Marcel Broodthaers’s 1964 sculpture ‘Pense-Bête’, in which the artist took unsold copies of one of his books of poetry and encased them in plaster, it posits the question: where does language end and the world begin? Produced a wide range of media, artworks by Irma Blank, Alighiero Boetti, Henri Chopin, Jimmie Durham, Robert Filliou, and Jean-Luc Moulène, among others, follow in this vein, crossing boundaries between the immaterial and material, language and things, and concrete poetry and concrete objects.

Mariko Kuwahara - Stone Dealer

Isbn 9784907562076
Publisher Torch Press
Idea code 16607
€ 37.70

The town of Onishi lies roughly 100 kilometres to the north-west of Tokyo, where legend has it that a troll who once lived on a nearby mountain threw a big stone down the mountain; people started to call the place where it landed “Onishi”. Mariko Kuwahara spent time there talking with local inhabitants and photographing the stones and rocky landscapes she found. The people who made the deepest impression on her were the men called ‘Ishiya-san’ (stone dealers). On its surface, this book is a document of her conversations with them, yet underneath it is a story of disappearing towns and villages in Japan, of dialects soon to be lost, and ways of life in danger of being forgotten.

Each dialogue centres on a specific theme, ranging from poetics to politics, mythology to ecology, and intercultural studies to conflict management. The associative chains of thought give insight into the creative process. Author Guy Cools works as a critic, curator, and policymaker for dance, and edited the talk transcripts in cooperation with dance dramaturge Lisa Marie Bowler.
