Isbn 9789198071641
Publisher Vandalorum
Idea code 15039

Co-curated by Aiden O’Connor and Elna Svenle, this exhibition presents for the first time a survey of progressive Nordic design for children in the 20th and 21st centuries. Richly illustrated, and intertwining design with the social history and continuing redefinition of childhood, it features furniture, toys, schools, playgrounds, health and safety products, posters and advertising, and more. Organised chronologically, it represents the different Nordic countries and diverse design disciplines, revealing a strong connection with nature and natural materials, practicality and economy, egalitarian values, empathy for the child’s perspective, and the endurance of folk traditions.

Rather than show the standard sketches and prototypes, the exhibition included the actual objects that inspire Theselius, and which he references in his work. This invaluable source of ideas ranges from books, toys and musical instruments, to everyday objects acquired in his travels around the globe.

Ugo La Pietra - Disequilibrating Design

Isbn 9788875704759
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 15056
€ 41.10

This book accompanies an exhibition at the Triennale Design Museum, and is the first major monograph on unorthodox designer Ugo La Pietra. A humanist and eclectic designer, an architect by training, artist, filmmaker, musician, cartoonist and teacher, La Pietra successfully identified new relationships between design and crafts, the culture of ‘making’ and design. Theoretician of the “genius loci”, he rediscovered the value of craftsmanship at a time when almost everyone was celebrating the “magnificent progress” brought by industrial mass production. Often using humour and even sarcasm, La Pietra places at the centre of his work the relationship between man and environment.

Publisher Du Books
Idea code 15044
€ 31.35

This is the catalogue for an exhibition at Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Tower Mito, curated by Nakako Hayashi. Over the years, Hayashi has built a reputation for her DIY and personal approach to clothing, one that embraces a message of spontaneity, ownership, and subjectivity, while she quietly battles the fashion industry’s hegemony. Her group – which includes photographers Takashi Homma and Yurie Nagashima, designer Yukinori Maeda, artist Miranda July, graphic designer Kazunari Hattori, and others – approaches fashion and art from highly individual perspectives. Includes installation views, texts, and biographies, plus Q & A sessions with the show’s contributors.

Selected by Naoto Fukasawa of the Japan Design Committee, the various objects included in the exhibition ‘Optimum—The Designs of Original Forms’ are presented as exemplars of their types. In seeking the optimum form, which differs from original forms that are subject to individual creativity, the efforts their designers have undertaken to discover the absolute origins of forms becomes apparent. It is an insightful, minimalistic and inspiring collection of things and typologies from a range of notable designers. Besides texts and short explanations for each by Fukasawa, the book includes a conversation about the selection process and the intentions behind it.

Subtle - The 47th Takeo Paper Show

Isbn 9784907942007
Publisher Takeo Co.
Idea code 15026
€ 45.15

The Takeo Paper Show has been held annually since 1965, but the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, which occurred during the preparation of the 46th edition, forced a reconsideration of the history and significance of the show. After two years of planning, and with art direction by Kenya Hara, the 47th edition focuses on the delicacy, resilience and important value of paper, with the intention to rethink and further broaden the possibilities for fine paper. In turn, this finely bound and richly illustrated volume presents the show’s contents: an array of paper types, paper objects and artworks, as well as highly creative applications for paper that push the boundaries of the medium.

Golden Meaning Fifty Five Graphic Experiments

Isbn 9780957238114
Publisher Lecturis
Idea code 15034
€ 20.00

Often referred to as the ‘divine proportion’, the golden mean has long served as a blueprint for aesthetic appeal. Golden Meaning puts this to the test, exploring the relationship between graphic design and mathematics. Intended to be as intriguing as it is illuminating, this title collects the responses of 55 (think Fibonacci) designers, typographers and image-makers to the same brief – to communicate, explore or explain the golden mean. New works tackle this ancient mathematical quandary with intelligence, style and a generous pinch of wit. Each design is accompanied by a short rationale explaining the designer’s decision-making process.

Beeldstatistiek Peter Alma

Isbn 9789490913472
Publisher De Buitenkant
Idea code 15083
€ 48.00

Since 2010, Wim Jansen has undertaken a search for the infographics created by Peter Alma, who is more widely known for his work as a painter and graphic designer. In the 1930s, Alma worked in Otto Neurath’s museum in Vienna, and also in its affiliates in Moscow and Kharkiv. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he started his own office and developed infographics for the city of Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, and the Dutch Union of Government Workers, among others. The symbols were printed using linocuts, and of extremely high quality. They are collected in this publication for the first time, which includes 68 detached plates that can be spread out or hung on the wall.

Hansje Van Halem - Sketch Cahier

Isbn 9789490913502
Publisher De Buitenkant
Idea code 15082
€ 30.00

Collected here are highlights from graphic designer Hansje van Halem’s sold-out previous publication, ‘Sketchbook’, together with new work. This volume contains 52 pages with a dizzying array of commissioned, applied, self-generated, rejected, and unfinished sketches, type drawings, motifs, and experiments (both successes and failures). According to Van Halem, experimenting with typography is something she began to do in between deadlines for book designs: a hobby that has translated into a number of assignments. The tension between a systematic approach, legibility, and (ir)regularity appeals to Van Halem, visible in her patterns and textures.

Weaving Spaces

Isbn 9788875704643
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 15045
€ 60.45

“This book describes the interweaving of colours that mix with the principles of perspective, of form that interacts with the eye, of light that blends with the shades of materials. But above all it describes a design, a project made of the stuff of dreams, in which skilled hands have given geometric precision, shape, proportion, concrete essence to the visible.” The choice of fabrics and design experimentation, always sitting precariously between tradition and innovation, have become the distinctive marks of all Paola Lenti creations, a company in which artistic project and artisanal work come together in mutual encroachment.
