Christien Meindertsma - Bottom Ash Observatory

Isbn 9789081865210
Publisher Thomas Eyck
Idea code 15217
€ 53.50

Following a tour through the largest and most energy-efficient waste-to-energy plant in the world, Dutch artist and designer Christien Meindertsma became intrigued with the dark residue leftover by the process of incinerating municipal solid waste. Using a 25-kilo sample of raw bottom ash, as it is called, she demonstrates the rich properties and versatility of this resource by successfully gleaning numerous materials from it by hand – among them valuable reusable ones such as zinc, aluminium, copper, and silver. Meindertsma commissioned photographer Mathijs Labadie to document every step of this exhaustively precise process in a surprisingly scientific inquiry.

Isbn
Publisher Typotheque
Idea code 15219

Among the contributions, Anne Quito plunges into Manila’s forgery market, Ahmed Al Majid seeks out underground art in Saudi Arabia, Barbara Eldredge brings to light designer bags and gadgets for clandestine gardening, Jonah Goodman investigates how prisoners create imaginative inventions using contraband, and Peter Guest discusses Brixton’s homegrown currency.

Science Of The Secondary 3: Clock

Isbn 9789810935474
Publisher Atelier Hoko
Idea code 15171
€ 18.70

In general, there are two different kinds of clocks. The first tells time in the form of a common factor that most of us can relate to, a concept of ‘time’ that is shared in order for a social and ordered life to be lived with one another. Then, there is another ‘clock’ that is neither time nor instrument but a continuous stream of rhythm that flows through each and everyone of us. Between these two, which clock have you been using daily? Uncovering the implicit conditions that describes our interactions and encounters with the ‘Clock', the authors translated these findings through images, diagrams and texts.

Hansje Van Halem - Sketch Cahier

Isbn 9789490913502
Publisher De Buitenkant
Idea code 15082
€ 30.60

Collected here are highlights from graphic designer Hansje van Halem’s sold-out previous publication, ‘Sketchbook’, together with new work. This volume contains 52 pages with a dizzying array of commissioned, applied, self-generated, rejected, and unfinished sketches, type drawings, motifs, and experiments (both successes and failures). According to Van Halem, experimenting with typography is something she began to do in between deadlines for book designs: a hobby that has translated into a number of assignments. The tension between a systematic approach, legibility, and (ir)regularity appeals to Van Halem, visible in her patterns and textures.

Publisher De Buitenkant
Idea code 15083

Since 2010, Wim Jansen has undertaken a search for the infographics created by Peter Alma, who is more widely known for his work as a painter and graphic designer. In the 1930s, Alma worked in Otto Neurath’s museum in Vienna, and also in its affiliates in Moscow and Kharkiv. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he started his own office and developed infographics for the city of Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, and the Dutch Union of Government Workers, among others. The symbols were printed using linocuts, and of extremely high quality. They are collected in this publication for the first time, which includes 68 detached plates that can be spread out or hung on the wall.

The publication marks the conclusion of five editions of the Utrecht Manifest, the biennial event dedicated to the social aspects of design, which was launched a decade ago. It also outlines an agenda for the future on the basis of those biennials. The catalogue gathers objects created by some of the protagonists of the international design scene – such as Matali Crasset and Giulio Iacchetti, and from emerging figures such as Drill Design – along with the works of visual artists who have always worked on the “cartographic” story, such as Alighiero Boetti, and Michelangelo Pistoletto among others.

Isbn 9788875704681
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 15218

'Herbarium Taste' is a graphic project designed to be eaten: a collection, a nutritional herbarium divided into seasons. Fruits and vegetables are represented in a simple and essential way, and they are then sectioned to reveal the valuable resources contained within. This book is not a treatise on medicine, nor is it a boring health lesson; it is an easy way of showing that there is something important in each piece of fruit or vegetable, and that it would be good for our well being to include them in our repertoire of recipes. It is a small educational manual that lists nutritional information and pieces of trivia, like crumbs of knowledge to be eaten up in one mouthful.

Ugo La Pietra - Green Works It Out!

Isbn 9788875704919
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 15247
€ 16.15

Architecture insists on building, only introducing “greenery” in built-up areas as an element capable of accomplishing or performing various functions. Architecture often forgets, however, that greenery, unlike buildings and cities, has its own life and developmental processes. Given time, greenery will always get the upper hand. Grounded in the research and ideas of Italian architect and thinker Ugo La Pietra, this publication addresses the metamorphoses inherent in the unseen or spontaneous forms of natural progression. He maps the conformation, deterioration, obsolescence, temporary modification, and human action that impact our physical world.

Marti Guixe - Bicycle Book

Isbn 9788875705046
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 15272
€ 17.70

There is a bicycle to suit every taste, moment and circumstance: robust mountain bikes for climbing on the crest of a hill and functional folding bikes for pedalling around town, racing bicycles for speeding along the pavements of Flanders and bold BMXs to carry out impossible stunts, streamlined track bikes and small Graziellas perfect for a trip to the park on a spring afternoon. It would be fantastic to have them all, but perhaps it’s just as nice to imagine them, without having to find space in the garage for such a vast collection. That’s why Martí Guixé proposes this new funny, ironic do-it-yourself book: two wheels on each page and the freedom to imagine and draw your own models

Page 1 Great Expectations

Isbn 9780957238107
Publisher Lecturis
Idea code 15205
€ 17.50

'Page 1: Great Expectations' is an unusual typographic experiment designed to explore the relationship between graphic design, typography and the reading of a page. Crafted to engage the culturally curious, this publication collects the responses of 70 international graphic designers when posed with the same brief – to design and lay out the first page of 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens, a text chosen in part because it directly references lettering as Pip searches for clues about his family from the letterforms inscribed on their tombstone. Each layout is accompanied by a short rationale explaining the designer’s decision-making process.

What are the origins of the exuberant swash letters that can be found on the windows of many of Amsterdam's most traditional bars? Who painted them? Was it a collective creation, or the work of a lone gifted letter painter? How old is the style? For almost a decade the authors of 'The Curly Letter of Amsterdam' thoroughly researched this lettering style and documented every surviving example in Amsterdam, Maastricht, and Ghent in an effort to answer these questions and raise awareness of the importance of this little known chapter of the Dutch graphical tradition.
