The result are photos of streets, public squares, museums, ruins and shops, places of culture and consumption. Devided in 17 chapters everything passes by in a set of chance driven encounters. Mohamed Bourouissa Horseday

Isbn 9789491843730
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 16477
€ 15.00

Algerian-born photographer Mohamed Bourouissa is interested in systems, in how society—and particularly subcultures—are structured. For his project Horseday (2013), he worked with a local Afro-American horse riding community in Philadelphia. He was fascinated by the status of these “urban cowboys” and organised a competition with artists and riders to find the best decorated horse. Bourouissa translated this event into a series of photos, a two-part video, and several sculptures. Both scenes from everyday life and the staged event were recorded. In his preparations, Bourouissa made many sketches and draft compositions, which are also included in this book.

Isbn 9789492051196
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 16512
€ 32.00

'Aeronautics in the Backyard' is a catching, fairytale-like photo series about the dream of flying, freedom, and creativity. In China, in the most unexpected of places, farmers rise up to build their own aircraft from recycling scrap metal. Some of these aeronauts have worked for decades but never achieved to get airborne. Xu is driven by questions of why, of all people, Chinese farmers have the guts and skills to become aeronauts, even though they lack both education and resources. Their stories, pictures, original sketches, and technical documents are brought together in the book, unveiling the hidden world of Chinese aeronautics in full detail for the first time.

After a twelve-year separation from her father, photographer Josée Schryer returned to Grenville-sur-la-Rouge in Quebec, Canada, with a daughter that he had never met and a deep longing for the landscape of her childhood. Through the uncomfortable weight of their past mistakes and decisions, the artist and her father reconnect. The narrative is framed by green, forested hills and narrow roads. Winter arrives and snowy landscapes form a backdrop for scattered deer and a cosy, wood-panelled house. We observe a young girl as she discovers this new world, wandering among the rocks outdoors or sitting patiently, piecing together a jigsaw puzzle. Slowly, the distance melts away.

Andreas Trogisch - Vineta 1985/1990

Isbn 9783941825949
Publisher Peperoni Books
Idea code 16469
€ 35.20

Andreas Trogisch has made photographs for the better part of three decades, but only recently have any of his images been published. This book combines two series he shot in the streets of East Berlin, just before and shortly after the fall of the Wall. Portraits from 1985 – serious and uncertain children, optimistic young people, and older men and women who seem disheartened and disappointed – are juxtaposed with the deserted cityscapes of 1990. The demise of the GDR is tangible: advertising has lost its meaning, facades and vehicles are without a future. Trogisch documents a visually stunning parable about ongoing, unstoppable social development and processes of change.

Julia Steinigeweg - Ein Verwirrendes Potenzial (a Confusing Potential)

Isbn 9783941825925
Publisher Peperoni Books
Idea code 16391
€ 39.20

This series by Julia Steinigeweg is based on the relationships humans can form with silicon dolls. Such a circumstance lacks the emotional element of a physical human counterpart, but also causes a feeling of unease through a strong objective presence, which has been designed by manufacturers and artisans to be eerily lifelike. Perhaps the main reason for acquiring such a doll is its sexual attractiveness, yet the couples portrayed in the series tend to have a soothing relationship, free of fear and loss of control. Do love and coexistence require the exchange of feelings? Or do we ultimately feel and love by ourselves, detached from each other despite a physical counterpoint?

Genda 1: Body As Packaging

Isbn 9788887071641
Publisher A+m Bookstore
Idea code 16451
€ 16.15

Sometimes the human body becomes just another object. The body used as any other material, deprived of its sexual, moral, and social aspects. The body without rhetoric, history, or ethics, stripped of that recognition that pertains to a living person, ambiguous and perhaps discomfiting. Thinking of the body as packaging raises new questions. Has the relationship between social tensions and imagery of the body subsided? Does the formal staging of the body make it an inert, inhuman element? How can the representation of a body stripped of its vital and sexual energy be critically interpreted? ‘Genda’ introduces 21 international photographers whose work is situated in this curious territory.

Josef Sudek: The Window Of My Studio

Isbn 9788072155071
Publisher Torst
Idea code
€ 70.55

Josef Sudek (1896–1976) was Prague’s Atget. From the mid-1920s until his death in 1976, Sudek photographed everything – the Gothic and Baroque architecture, the streets and objects – usually leaving the frame free of people. Because he was reclusive, a large portion of Sudek’s work was captured through his studio window: he was particularly fond of how the glass refracted light. 'The Window of My Studio' series, spanning from the beginning of the Second World War to the first half of the 1950s, presents the series, which was of fundamental importance to Sudek, for it caused his work to move further into a surreal or Magic Realist style, with blurred images and strong shadows.

Heiko Sievers 1980.in Berlin.

Isbn 9783941825956
Publisher Peperoni Books
Idea code 16392
€ 32.15

According to Heiko Sievers, who was born and grew up in Berlin, his photographs of West Berlin in the early 1980s “testify to three things: my state of mind in that city at that time; people in the subway or on the street who were unknown to me; and a specific city atmosphere.” With pictures that are neither portraits nor documentary, the project amounts to his own narrative and experience of that time and place, offering a record of moments of life through fleeting impressions in shades of grey. Sievers recognises these images as history; nothing more than an extract, an intriguing memory of a city that has not existed since more than two decades ago.
