This instalment focuses on two British practices: Jonathan Woolf and Sergison Bates. Featured are Woolf’s Lion Rooms, Lost Villa, and Brick Leaf House, as well as various urban and suburban housing projects by Sergison Bates.

Cobe - Our Urban Living Room

Isbn 9789187543395
Publisher Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing
Idea code 16570
EUR 54.30

Over the last decade, Copenhagen has undergone a major transformation – not just in its appearance, but in the way the city functions and is experienced by its residents. COBE’s projects are spread out over Copenhagen, but they aren’t cookie-cutter buildings that are placed without meaning or context. Each structure is highly aware of what the local markers mean in a globalised world. What unites them is the architects’ desire to achieve a more sustainable, socially inviting urban environment for city residents. This monograph speaks to all those who live and work in cities, with contributions ranging from established architects and architecture critics to the those in municipal and urban planning roles and the residents themselves.

Residential Masterpieces 23: Paulo Mendes Da Rocha

Isbn 9784871406482
Publisher Ada Edita Global Architecture
Idea code 16555
EUR 29.70

Begun in São Paulo in 1964 by Paulo Mendes da Rocha when he was just 36 years old, the Brazilian architect’s own residence was highly influential in his home country but little published due to the political climate of the time. An entire “heroic” phase of Brazilian architecture, with significant works by Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, and others, was impacted by the Brazil’s increasing cultural isolation. Mendes da Rocha’s work was not recognised internationally until the 1990s, which led to a “rediscovery” of this house as a kind of manifesto. Its brutalist reinforced concrete surfaces and structural simplicity resonate with history in this series of photographs by Yukio Futagawa.

Arquitectura Viva 187: Spanish Solutions - Under 50 The Crisis Generation

Isbn 02141256
Publisher Avisa
Idea code 16523
EUR 19.45

In Spain, the last ten years have seen the profession become a desolate ecosystem which architects have been forced to adapt to in order to stay afloat, turning small commissions into near-manifestos, working in universities, publishing, or curatorial activities, or looking for greener pastures in other countries. Eduardo Prieto presents this panorama in all its rawness, but points out the capacity for ‘creative destruction’ that the crisis has had in certain aspects. For his part, Richard Ingersoll takes stock of the different work methods of the generation of the crisis, exemplifying them with six works then featured in detail.
