Jason Fulford: Contains 3 Books

Isbn 9789081058476
Publisher Soon Institute
Idea code 16603
€ 38.40

'Jason Fulford: Contains 3 Books' is a silver foil-stamped box that, appropriately enough, contains three books by photographer Jason Fulford: 'Mild Moderate Severe Profound', 'I Am Napoleon', and '&&'. The culmination of three years and 15 countries’ worth of travel around the world undertaken by Fulford as a Guggenheim Fellow, the photographs in these three volumes receive Fulford’s trademark elliptical, evocative sequencing, interspersed with texts that alternately explain and confound.

'Henk Schiffmacher – Photographer' is an extensive overview of Schiffmacher’s work as a photographer and, as the title suggests, is all about photography (and not tattoos). Featuring a wide selection of photographs taken between 1970 and 1985 in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Mumbai, Manilla, San Francisco, and Kuala Lumpur amongst others, one finds a raw mix of direct analogue shots on society in the 70s and 80s with a rich array of individuals showing off their best and worst features in front of Henk’s camera. You will find all sorts of different stories and people, joined together in a pattern that was Henk’s incomparably raw and curious sense of photography.

Willy Spiller - Hell On Wheels

Isbn 9783906822075
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 16559
€ 48.40

First published in 1984, photographer Willy Spiller’s scenes from New York’s notoriously crime-ridden subway system retrospectively tell a different story, one of glitz and colour, curiosity and amusement. Today we can look back at his images with a more objective feeling, finding not the sensationalism, danger, and voyeurism proclaimed by the media at the time, but rather the fascination of this young European newcomer to the Big Apple with its people, neon lights, movement, and relentless energy. Captured on Kodachrome slide film, Spiller’s visions of the city’s sordid underground transportation system fall right in line with other pioneers who first documented New York in colour.

Matt Eich - Carry Me Ohio

Isbn 9783906822020
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 16594
€ 48.40

Matt Eich is a photographer born and based in Virginia. His work centres on long-form photographic essays about the American Condition, and this, his first book, portrays just a single microcosm of a story familiar to many similar communities throughout the United States. The series portrays the lives of residents in various Ohio towns, like Carbondale and Mineral. Once booming coal mining communities, these places now reflect the desolate shadow of Appalachian poverty, their people hopeless and without a future, left with nothing but their cultural identity in the aftermath of extractive industry. The book includes an afterword by Eich, plus an insert with two essays.

Their stories are told in this crowdfunded book, through Hessing’s captivating images and texts by Sophieke Thurmer.

'(Un)expected' is a memorable photo project about the coping process of surviving relatives of suicides. West Flanders, the region where Peter Dekens grew up, has high suicide rates; one and a half times higher than the European average. In 2008 Dekens’ mother took her life. '(Un)expected' contains five stories about the grief of survivors of suicide and the way people cope with their loss in different ways. Dekens wishes the book to be a support for survivors and to make the taboo regarding suicide widely debatable.

Claudia den Boer - Anchors

Isbn 9789492051226
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 16597
€ 32.00

In hectic life most of us long for quietness every now and then. Thinking of the notion of silence, the desert became the focus of Claudia den Boer. The desert is not only a place where it’s literally quiet, but can also be interpreted as a metaphor for silence; it’s where a specific place and a "state of mind" come together. But confronted with the immense space and silence she yearned for something to hold on. A branch, a rock, a tree, a house, an anchor.

Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 16587
€ 26.90

Ruth van Beek has been collecting photographs from all over the place for years. Newspaper clippings, amateur family pictures, images from old books and the internet. She puts them together in an ever-growing archive. Her new series, The Levitators are a species of animals that have their origin in images of domestic dogs. To bring the dogs back to life, Ruth van Beek cuts and fold the images. In this process of animating and fixating a lot goes wrong. In her attempt to make the dogs fly, they more and more loose their original dog-shape. They transform into fluffy objects, unsuccessful animals and by this uncertainty, become moldable and open to new interpretations

Stephanie Solinas - Dominique Lambert

Isbn 9791090306370
Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 16588

Dominique is the most popular mixed-gender first name in France, it is also the twenty-seventh commonest forename; combined with Lambert, which is the twenty-seventh commonest last name. So Stéphanie Solinas defined her survey population as being the hundred and ninety-one Dominique Lambert listed in the phone book. Implementing the various different techniques used by officialdom to represent a person’s identity, involving experts, and proceeding in successive stages, she explores and exhausts the system and tools of representation itself. For the first time, the book deploys the full set of faces in this sample of people.

In her travels between New York, Los Angeles, and Berlin, she has undertaken several documentary projects. ‘Untitled Youth’ is a collection of street casting portraits made for her editorial and photo projects. Publisher Felicie
Idea code 16601

For the past two years Dutch photographer Claire Felicie has worked on a project to portray fifteen war veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Soldiers who suffer from PTSD are emotionally wounded and carry these traumas with them all their lives, and their families suffer as well. The project’s goal is to capture how severe this mental state can be, and how imperative it is for those who experience it to receive treatment at an early stage. The photographs were taken at a former weapons factory in Zaandam, the Netherlands. Through interviews and images, Felicie strives to represent the mental wounds of an inner war that continues to be waged.

Sohei Nishino: Tokyo

Isbn 9784865872927
Publisher Amana
Idea code 16550
€ 77.50

Since 2003, photographer Sohei Nishino has constructed nearly twenty diorama maps of various cities around the world. Spending months at a time wandering each city, he makes upwards of 10,000 images with his camera, which are then printed and pieced together with meticulous detail on a canvas of several square metres. The result is a visual map of Nishino’s experience of the city. For ‘Diorama Map Tokyo’ (2014), his second of this city, the artist’s completed work reflects the tremendous change it has undergone since ten years prior. This book presents a magnified, dizzying view of the entire work, divided into 496 sections and arranged in a logical horizontal progression.

Yoshinori Mizutani: Hanon

Isbn 9784865872941
Publisher Amana
Idea code 16540
€ 58.00

In photographer Yoshinori Mizutani's new series, a follow up to ‘Tokyo Parrots’, his camera is again drawn to the birds that make their presence known in the city. The stark, black-on-white images capture large numbers of cormorants, which have apparently exploded in population in Tokyo’s suburbs. The very graphic compositions transform the urban landscape of power lines and the steel lattice towers that carry them into a seemingly two-dimensional picture. The flocks of cormorants strung along the wires overhead become beautifully abstract yet ominous silhouettes that often resemble musical notes on a score.

Fiona Tan - Ascent

Isbn 9784904257364
Publisher Izu Photo Museum
Idea code 16460
€ 47.15

Fiona Tan’s latest book, counterpart to an exhibition at the Izu Photo Museum in Japan, takes Mount Fuji as its theme. The work is a two-part installation comprising a 77-minute video and many photographs. The latter is based on more than 4000 photographs contributed by the public and selected from the museum’s collection. The project is simultaneously a rumination on the singularity of the mountain and our relationship to it, an exploration of history as told through visual culture, and a study of the history of film. The three-part publication (one volume of images and two with texts) explores identity, memory, and history, wherein Tan also examines the nature of the gaze itself.

Trinidad Carrillo: No Date

Isbn 9789188031129
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 16580
€ 48.40

According to Natasha Christia, “Trinidad Carrillo’s ‘diaries of dreams’ entail a wonderful, quasi-mystical moment, in which the chasm between the past, the present and the future collapses, and life unexpectedly assumes a significance beyond everyday reality. It is the moment when word becomes image.” ‘No Date’ continues in this tradition with a highly diverse series of photographs that range from effervescent landscapes and deeply shadowed portraits to surreal shots of people and babies in interiors or natural settings, night scenes, and ghostly appearances. The book is dedicated to Moloch, the Biblical name of a Canaanite god, and includes the poem “Migratory Birds”.

Funny Money

Isbn
Publisher Kesselskramer
Idea code 16549
€ 10.00

Photographing locals in Africa is something many Westerners enjoy doing, but unfortunately they rarely want to document the reality of the person in front of them. Rather, they desire a photo that reinforces their idea of a stereotypical “African”. By offering money, they can dictate how the subject is portrayed, turning the photo into an exploitation of the individual, their culture and tribal history, and perpetuating derogatory clichés. Max Siedentopf grew up in Namibia. On his last visit home he asked locals if he could take their picture. If they wanted money in return, he let them name their price. Although free to pose in any way they liked, the money had to be part of the photograph.
