Atelier Bow-Wow - Commonalities Of Architecture

Isbn 9789461866769
Publisher Tu Delft
Idea code 16646
€ 14.60

Each year the Wouter Mikmak Foundation invites a designer to lecture for the series ‘Designers of the Future’. This publication presents that of the Tokyo-based office Atelier Bow-Wow, founded in 1992 by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima. Their vision calls for a shift in architectural design from individuality based to commonality based, through the notion of architectural ‘behaviorology’. Behaviour in this sense is an inclusive term that not only denotes human practice, but also a building’s behaviour as material typology, as well as phenomena produced by natural elements like light, air, heat, and water. An architecture based on commonalities is key to their discussion.

Perrault: Groundscapes- Other Topographies

Isbn 9782910385989
Publisher Hyx Editions
Idea code 16604
€ 30.10

In this richly illustrated book, French architect Dominique Perrault offers his thoughts on the architecture of the “Groundscape”, a subterranean form of architecture. Although the concept does not entail actually living underground, it does suggest an approach to revealing and marking places for the activities of daily life in the earth itself. Based on exchanges and interviews between Perrault and Frédéric Migayrou, the publication offers an engaging overview of the architect’s aesthetic vision, its acknowledgement of (and place within) this threshold between earth and sky, and his most emblematic buildings, including Bibliothèque Nationale de France and Ewha Womans University.

Moduli 225 A Gem Of Modern Architecture

Isbn 9789526068770
Publisher Aalto University
Idea code 16632
€ 25.00

Moduli 225 is a modular timber frame system for holiday homes developed from 1968 to 1974 by the Finnish architects Kristian Gullichsen and Juhani Pallasmaa. Through the use of prefabricated standard elements, the system allowed anyone to construct a building of high aesthetic quality in a flexible and modifiable way by combining components according to their personal preferences. Through the Moduli system, the industrial serial production of components was successfully combined with freedom of choice, individuality, proportional harmony, and modernist expression. The simple standard shape and geometry and the humane scale and harmony of proportion of Moduli all represent universal aesthetics.

Recreating Amsterdam

Isbn 9789461400581
Publisher Architectura & Natura
Idea code 16634
€ 29.15

Thanks to the activity of Stadsherstel Amsterdam, founded in 1956, the post-war wave of renovation not only preserved the historic center of Amsterdam, it became in the meantime a current vibrant metropolis, in cultural and social sense. A city whose rich history still can be seen and which is attractive in this way for living, working, studying, business, and cultural recreation. Meanwhile Stadsherstel increased their working area and advises also abroad. The Stadsherstel formula is successful and an example for many other heritage rescuers elsewhere in the world. That was one of the reasons to create a book which combines graphic design and Amsterdam architecture in detail.

When B-Side Becomes A-Side - Jo Nagasaka

Isbn 9784306046429
Publisher Kajima Institute
Idea code 16530
€ 29.05

Jo Nagasaka of Tokyo-based Schemata Architects works on various projects, from furniture to architecture, and is intent on narrowing the gap between the two aspects of academic and “living” architecture. All of the works presented in this book are categorised as “B-side” projects of Schemata Architects, a term that plays on the standard reference to the reverse side of a record. While the “A-side” features a hit track, the B-side often features a less commercial but more “real” song. Especially in Japan, according to Nagasaka, people tend to be more interested in these B-side projects, which all have the potential to become A-side, given that the projects’ values are understood.

Maurice Nio - Suprasensitivity In Architecture

Isbn 9789071346453
Publisher Duizend & Een
Idea code 16565
€ 39.50

Beyond the vagaries of taste and subjectivity, the pure and primary awareness of the space itself, lies the notion of the supra-sensitive. This is the realm where designers must strike a chord by evoking a chain reaction of animated materials. Becoming conscious of the supra-sensitive world is one thing; being willing to work with and influence it is another. Rotterdam-based architect Maurice Nio explores supra-sensitivity in architecture in this book, describing how animating matter means manipulating its frequency – a vibration that triggers another vibration. The result is an experience that will inevitably evoke an emotional response in any who are subjected to it.

Who's Afraid Of Architecture ? Take One Venezia

Isbn 9788874628674
Publisher Quodlibet
Idea code 16631
€ 19.35

In 2014, as part of the Venice Architecture Biennale, Florencia Costa carried out a project that involved repurposing Palazzo Mora, one of the city’s historic buildings. She conceived a methodology of action – “Who’s Afraid of Architecture” – and, reminiscent of Le Corbusier’s final project (the Civil Hospital in Venice), created a series of artists’ residences in the attic along with a new exhibition walkway. The architect transformed what already existed, dismantling it, reassembling it, revealing the primary and secondary wooden structure typically used to build Venetian palazzi, and eliminating the traces of bourgeois life that over time had become stratified in the areas originally destined for the service staff.

Recycled Theory Illustrated Dictionary

Isbn 9788874628940
Publisher Quodlibet
Idea code 16630
€ 26.90

Recycled Theory is a multidisciplinary dictionary made of entries in form of texts, drawings and quotes, which explore the concept of “recycling” in design cultures and in the theories that nurture them. Usually we recycle things, objects, spaces but more often we return on principles and approaches to rearrange them, put them back into circulation, and override them. The practice of recycling is therefore placed in an area of negotiation between memory and amnesia, it brings out the unexpected self-regeneration potential of what exists. The words here collected (from “amnesia” to “zone”) identify materials, procedures, ambiguities, deviations, and potential nexus of recycling.

Oase 97: Action And Reaction - Oppositions In Architecture

Isbn 9789462083103
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 16606
€ 22.30

Creating and thinking about architecture has always been defined by the mechanism of action and reaction. One way of making architecture is criticized or rejected and immediately used as a starting point for another, opposing and better method, practice, or theory. Architects and critics react on each other's views using drawings, texts, models, and buildings. A good architecture culture thrives on such a basis: the exciting battle between views, opinions, and beliefs.

Monu 25: Independent Urbanism

Isbn 18603211
Publisher Board Publishers
Idea code 16592
€ 15.00

The various phenomena impacting cities of countries that have become newly independent is the focus of this issue. It examines, for instance, the remodelling of Skopje, Macedonia, according to an image of the city that never existed as such, as well as the major struggles cities face in finding their new identity, as seen in Prishtina, Kosovo. In an interview with Bart Lootsma, Dijana Vučinić describes how preserving identity within cultures that desire to join the EU, such as Montenegro, is one of their biggest challenges. A photo essay by Arnis Balcus expands on how public monuments and spaces stoke controversial issues and collective traumas, and yet the dreams of a more hopeful younger generation persist in the series by Julia Autz.

C3 386 Public Buildings In A Private Time

Isbn 20925190
Publisher C3 Publishing
Idea code 16619
€ 27.25

The first of two features examines how the progressive privatisation of our lives in common impacts how we experience public space, wherein the need to escape politically or socially charged spaces causes us to seek refuge in our smartphones. Reflecting on the design of such buildings as museums, libraries, and operas helps to understand this trend. By contrast, the second feature declares that, despite the current crisis concerning the value of public space, shared and common space is actually expanding. Eleven examples of new hybrids of shared space outside the realm of traditional public space are highlighted, including works by Menis Arquitectos, Studio Gang, and VAUMM.

Species Of Spaces 1974 - An Accommodation Of Retained And Forgotten Locations

Isbn 9789187543920
Publisher Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing
Idea code 16571
€ 28.60

Georges Perec was a French novelist, film-maker, documentalist, and essayist, and also a member of the Oulipo group. Perec’s ‘Species of Space’ is a constellation of texts published in 1974 that investigates different spaces. Its primary focus is the order and system in which the texts are organised. This inventory is the theme of this book, which consists of essay contributions by nine artists, including Mohamed Camara and Kristina Jansson. Initiated by artists Cecilia Darle and Kristina Bength, the project also manifests in an exhibition. Their point of departure is Perec’s writings, in which limitations and rules become a working method that hints at an autobiographical latency.
