F.a. Warners Architect

Isbn 9789461400543
Publisher Architectura & Natura
Idea code 16695
EUR 50.90

Philip Anne Warners, referred to as F.A. Warners, was a Dutch architect whose career began in the early 20th century and coincided with the rise of the Amsterdam School. This expressive style, which had its heyday between 1911 and 1925, greatly impacted the outgrowth of Amsterdam’s urban footprint to the south and west of the city centre. Due to his friendship with Piet Kramer, one of its foremost proponents, Warners applied the style in his designs for luxurious apartment buildings and flats. Annet Pasveer recounts a detailed history of the life and work of Warners, whose buildings and interiors have been magnificently photographed for this book by Arjan Bronkhorst.

Residential Masterpieces 24: Mies Van Der Rohe Villa Tugendhat

Isbn 9784871406499
Publisher Ada Edita Global Architecture
Idea code 16664
EUR 32.80

Built on an expansive, sloping site situated in the northern part of Brno, Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tungendhat is a masterful example of 20th-century residential architecture. Since its seizure in World War II, the house has endured a long period of decline and relative obscurity, a former shade of itself. Painstakingly renovated over a number of years, its three levels and full-height glass walls have now regained their former lustre, gorgeously framed by the camera of esteemed Japanese photographer Yoshio Futagawa. As he writes in his accompanying text, “… clad in luxury that is almost impossible to duplicate, the house is… a crystallization of modern architectural principles.”

Kees Rijnboutt - Architect

Isbn 9789068686937
Publisher Thoth
Idea code 16692
EUR 50.90

This book is about buildings and their surroundings, what they mean for those who use them, the intended atmosphere they create, and what remains of that today. It features works by Dutch architect and urbanist Kees Rijnboutt, who has been active since 1964 until today, combining new colour photographs with older black-and-white images. Over the years, some buildings were altered, while others seem barely changed. In considering Rijnboutt’s oeuvre, parallels can be drawn with the history of architecture in the Netherlands over the last 50 years. As the responsibility and meaning of architecture has adapted to a changing society, so, too, is it reflected in the work of Rijnboutt.

The changes caused by humans on the Earth’s crust are of such magnitude as to have begun a new geological age, the so-called Anthropocene, the latest phase of the Quaternary, and this historical mutation is reflected as much in architecture as in the cities and landscapes of our time. Arquitectura Viva joins the discussion on this period of transformation, marked by the sustainability agenda, in its two latest issues, which come as siblings under the titles ‘Change of Climate’ and ‘Anthropocene,’ in that order. ‘Change of Climate’ takes stock of the current architectural scene, and the challenges that both globalization and the economic and ecological crisis impose on the profession.
