Shannon Ebner - A Public Character

Isbn 9789491843747
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 16702
€ 38.90

Published on the occasion of an exhibition by Shannon Ebner at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, which centres around an eponymous new video work commissioned by the museum. In her work the Los Angeles-based artist critically explores the role of images, often through historical interpretation and with a collaborative practice that includes sculpture, poetry, performance, and video. Certain aspects, especially seen in the ongoing series ‘Black Box Collision A’, represent her efforts to reflect upon our experience of language today at the intersection of landscape and architecture. Also included are the works ‘A Hudson Yard’, ‘A Self’, and ‘A Singular’, as well as insightful essays.

Danae Moons - Out Of Grip

Isbn 9789490119478
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 16696
€ 35.00

Two years after her disappearance in a boating accident on the Mahakam River, on her way to explore deep forest in Kalimantan, Indonesia, the first solo exhibition of work by young Dutch artist Danaë Moons was realised in Amsterdam. Published for the occasion, this book gathers her diverse oeuvre, from prints and film stills to sculptural objects, in turn reflecting her fascination with nature, stones, and the jungle. Through abstract and organic forms, she sought to express the confrontation between humans and the world around them, and pursued her deep desire to understand the foundations of this often paradoxical relationship. With a poignant text by Hans den Hartog Jager.

Marijn Van Kreij - Reclining Nude With A Man Playing The Guitar

Isbn 9789081671330
Publisher Abn Amro
Idea code 16678
€ 25.00

Winner of the 2016 ABN AMRO Art Award, Marijn van Kreij has a multifaceted oeuvre comprising drawings and paintings on paper, objects, collages, slide projections, videos, and installations. Reflecting on ideas around repetition, autonomy, and abstraction, his work often forms a response to existing works of art, in which form and colour dictate both the process and the unpredictable result. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of a new series of artworks at Hermitage Amsterdam, and designed by Irma Boom, this book reproduces monumental paintings on paper, called the “Picasso grids”, in which the artist selects details from Picasso’s late paintings to serve as points of departure.

Caspar

Isbn 9783952420638
Publisher Everyedition
Idea code 16675
€ 21.90

Graphic designer Sebastian Cremers produces posters, books, and other illustrative or typographic work as part of Prill Vieceli Cremers, a three-person design studio established in 2001 and based in Zurich. In ‘Caspar’ he delivers a visual story about a true friendship. With a stripped-down style that employs only thick, colourful lines in red, blue, and green (and occasionally black) to animate the simple narrative, his forms nevertheless lend themselves to universal recognition. Whether describing gestures, emotions, sounds, energies, or physical things, the bold lines dance from one page to the next, weaving through and visualising the action of story from beginning to end.

Terry Rodgers - Solo Spaces

Isbn 2867254101062
Publisher Torch
Idea code 16657
€ 35.00

The more recent paintings by American artist Terry Rodgers conjure up a vision of the private nightlife of privileged youth, with complex and large-scale compositions that underline the detachment of those portrayed. These contemporary character studies, painted in a representational realist style, draw upon his strong interest in film and photography and seem, at least on the surface, to celebrate decadence. Yet the characters, caught up in the acts of undressing and drinking, actually long for any form of meaningful contact. ‘Solo Spaces’ collects the latest set of works by Rodgers, called “quads” – visions which respond to our expectations through fine-tuned fictions.

Hercules Segers - Painter Etcher (Plates)

Isbn 9789462083400
Publisher Rijksmuseum/ Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 16652
€ 49.00

This oeuvre catalogue presents a comprehensive overview of Hercules Segers, an artist born in Haarlem and considered one of the most inspired, experimental, and original landscapists of the Dutch Golden Age. Besides being a painter, he was an innovative printmaker whose etchings of landscapes were often printed using coloured ink on coloured paper or cloth, hand-coloured and often cropped to different sizes. Segers also made use of drypoint and a form of aquatint, as well as other effects. Although his surviving paintings are rare, hundreds of prints make up a legacy now compiled and published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Vermeer's Little Street

Isbn 9789491714702
Publisher Rijksmuseum/ Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 16641
€ 20.00

Not much is known about Johannes Vermeer’s famous 'Little Street'. The exact location of this Delft townscape has been occupying art historians, archaeologists, and others for years. Did Vermeer picture his own house, or perhaps the view from it? Do the buildings he painted still exist? Or did he, at least in part, invent this wonderful, poignant composition? Art historian Frans Grijzenhout happened upon a source never before tapped for this purpose and was able to identify the site of this unique spot with its two adjacent passageways. This discovery sheds an entirely new light on Vermeer’s life and work, and on the harsh world of the people who lived in that little street – the painter’s kinsfolk – in the shadow of the Golden Age.

Marten En Oopjen

Isbn 9789491714832
Publisher Rijksmuseum / Nai010 Publisher
Idea code 16640
€ 20.00

Since 2016 the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre have been the proud joint owners of two portraits that had been rarely seen in public in the previous century and a half. Now the paintings will be shown alternately in Amsterdam and Paris. Rembrandt painted Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit in 1634, a year after they got married. The life-size, full-length, standing figures have the air of state portraits. Their opulent clothes tell us that they came from well-to-do families, but who, in fact, were Marten and Oopjen? And why did they call upon Rembrandt, who painted his first ever portrait only a couple of years earlier? The reason is simple: the young artist outshone his rivals with ease.

Joan Miro: Materiality And Metamorphosis

Isbn 9789727393428
Publisher Serralves
Idea code 16667
€ 30.10

Joan Miró considered materiality to be the foundation of his artistic practice. This catalogue, edited by Robert Lubar Messeri, a renowned Miró scholar, is published on the occasion of an exhibition of works by Miró organised by the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art. Richly illustrated with numerous artworks and preparatory sketches by the artist, it surveys his output over six decades and across different media, which included painting, sculpture, and ceramics. It reveals the way his continued exploration of materiality and innovative language of visual signs expanded the boundaries of artistic production in the 20th century and beyond, impacting numerous artists since.

James Pfaff Alex & Me

Isbn 9788898120857
Publisher Danilo Montanari
Idea code 16660
€ 26.90

James Pfaff’s work deals with the documentation and reconstruction of his own life and universe. Drawing on his photographic archive and personal journals, his expression is primarily through the medium of photography. He often later combines his images with the abstract form, paint, collage, and the written word in contemporary response. The series ‘Alex & Me’ (1998) – in which the narrative of an American road trip undertaken by Pfaff together with a woman poetically plays out – can be considered as a point of departure. He writes: “The summer of ’98 was slipping away as we made our way south. Asphalt and neon. Black coffee, cigarettes. Night-scented Louisiana.”

Alex Farrar The 'suits' Archived

Isbn 9789491783111
Publisher 7.45 Books (extended)
Idea code 16670
€ 18.50

This slim volume signals the conclusion of a project that began in 2007 when, without any prior experience or technical advice, Alex Farrar made a suit from scratch to wear whenever representing himself as an artist. Another, improved suit was produced in 2009, suggesting a course for the rest of the project: the work would conclude once a suit was made that was indistinguishable from a professionally crafted example. Following a series of replacements, such an exemplar was finally produced in 2016. This book is structured around reports and documentation produced by the conservators of the suits. Designed by Stéphanie Dondelinger, with texts by Laura van Grinsven and Robert Barry.

Malcolm Morley History Painting

Isbn 9789491245176
Publisher Xavier Hufkens
Idea code 16658
€ 20.00

As indicated by the title of this exhibition catalogue, the theme of Malcolm Morley’s recent work is history and, more specifically, war and conflict. The paintings can be viewed as the multi-layered products of a complex process of historical deconstruction and reconstruction, immersing the viewer in a vibrant historical universe where past and present merge, fusing anachronistic elements into a unified whole. As World War I biplanes fly over Spanish galleons, and scenes from pivotal battles in British and American history play out, it is clear that Morley’s sources of inspiration are the models and figures he has collected over the years, from jousting knights to Native Americans.

Plain Paper - Surface

Isbn 9789082396621
Publisher De Monsterkamer / Stroomberg
Idea code 16662
€ 30.00

This is the first issue of ‘Plain Paper’, an English-language magazine dedicated to a multifaceted exploration of paper, launched and jointly produced by Amsterdam-based paper enthusiasts and graphic designers Esther Krop and Philip Stroomberg. Its theme is “surface”, a tribute to the tangible experience of paper, which is elaborated upon through the varied work of six contributors: Stephan Keppel, Barbarber, Vincent Bijlo, Underware, Cindy Moorman, and Ruth van Beek. Interestingly, numerous texts throughout the magazine are covered by scratch-off logos or images, which the reader must deface in order to read the words underneath.

Wesley Willis Trucks

Isbn 9783906213187
Publisher Rollo Press
Idea code 16673
€ 12.00

For two decades until his death in 2003, keyboard rock star Wesley Willis (*1963) rendered Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway and geometric skyline with ballpoint pen and felt-tip-marker lines. Known primarily to an alternative public for the uniquely singular sounds from his Technics KN 2000 and surreal texts which explored the themes of daily life such as fast food, bus lines, cultural trends or violent confrontations with super heroes, Wesley Willis's drawings testify to the years he spent sitting in on drawing classes at the Illinois Institute of Technology, manifest in drafting techniques Willis never abandoned but, to singular effect, refused to master.

Daniel Boyd - Parts Of Lost Body (After Aime Cesaire & Pablo Picasso)

Isbn 9780995358607
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 16521
€ 27.75

Taking late Francophone writer, politician, and founding father of the Negritude movement Aimé Césaire's seminal collection of poems 'Lost Body' (illustrated by Pablo Picasso) as its source material and guide, this slender volume from Indigenous Australian artist Daniel Boyd not only shines a light back on the mid-century black consciousness movement, but continues his quietly spoken mining of modernism's relationship to colonialism. Featuring Boyd's painterly appropriations of Picasso's economical line-drawings, 'Parts of Lost Body' not only pays homage to Césaire and his wider impact, but poses questions of Picasso's uncomfortable place in the cultural scheme of Negritude.

Thea Djordjadze To Be In An Upright Position On The Feet

Isbn 9783957633392
Publisher Revolver Publishing
Idea code
€ 22.45

Thea Djordjadze’s installations are always developed on site and in direct response to the surrounding space. She begins by exploring the specific qualities of an exhibition space; her works subtly transform the viewer’s perception and possible interpretations of the given architectural situation. Her creative practice consists in the ongoing re-purposing, reconfiguration, and reorganisation of existing or new objects. The characteristic feature of her art is the provisional arrangement, that will subsequently be discarded or replaced and already contains within itself the seed of a transition into something else. Indeed, in a sense, such temporariness itself becomes the work.
