Awoiska Van Der Molen - Blanco

Isbn 9789490119485
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 17108
€ 27.50

Awoiska van der Molen has been producing monochrome landscape photography since 2009. ‘Blanco’ is the result of extended periods of isolation, during which the Dutch photographer penetrates deep into the essence of the remote world where she creates her images. Removed from today’s fast-paced society, she patiently experiences the landscape in a new way, moving beyond initial appearances to gradually uncover the identity of the place, allowing it to impress upon her its specific emotional and physical qualities. Through enigmatic contrasts between darkness and light in her large-format silver gelatin prints, notions of time and self blur, becoming non-existent.

Paul Kooiker: Tokyo

Isbn 9789490800581
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 17087
€ 40.00

Paul Kooiker's latest series, a project initiated by invitation of Shigeo Goto and Sawako Fukai at G/P gallery, Tokyo, is based on a sitting in Tokyo in 2015. It started out just being colour photographs of a model posing. Later, using Photoshop, Kooiker revised a few of the nearly identical images, freely altering the layers, often altering the image beyond recognition. For this publication, a single image has been cropped to a square format and reimagined in a series of more than a hundred different renderings. Kooiker has shifted the focus to the model's buttocks and applied a spectrum of colour and abstraction, often to the point that the original image is no longer evident.

Els Vanden Meersch: Mastering The Curtains

Isbn 9789490800611
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 17136
€ 18.00

The result of a four-year research project by artist Els Vanden Meersch touching on two perspectives in Iran, one public, the other hidden. The first approach focuses on the content and implementation in the public space of the popular and politicised form of street theatre, Tazi’yeh. The second explores the secretive world of the Sufis and their difficulties within the current political policy. These seeming opposites share common ground in Iranian collective memory via social and spiritual resistance. Reflections on religion, private and public, transparency and control, are mediated through a series of images, from which the social potential of secular mysticism emerges.

De Lathauwer I Loved My Wife Killing Children Is Good For The Economy

Isbn 9789462262201
Publisher Lecturis
Idea code 17103
€ 34.95

The photos in 'I loved my wife' were taken on the site of 16 Austrian psychiatric institutions. Tens of thousands of children were murdered in these institutions during the Second World War. Killed because they were considered to be incurably ill. The costs of keeping them alive were too high for society, an opinion that was reinforced with films and other propaganda material directed against people who had nothing to offer society. Euphemisms for the murders were ‘mercy death’ and ‘euthanasia’. Provisions for the institutions and care for the victims of hereditary illnesses were seen as working against natural selection.

Muslim Matter

Isbn 9783957633590
Publisher Revolver Publishing
Idea code 17068
€ 26.20

This book underscores the complexity and heterogeneity of various Muslim communities, places where prayer and amusement go hand in hand, and simple pleasures offset the harshness of conflict-ridden environments. Moreover, it offers perspectives on communities in dialogue with non-Muslim majorities, or occasions where a subject’s humanness takes precedence over its Muslim-ness. Gathering photographs, objects, and essays as a way to present the overlooked and sometimes underrepresented aspects of everyday life across various Muslim societies, an intriguing presentation of objects, artefacts, and texts reflect on the importance of material and visual cultures.

Sabine Schirdewahn - Of Love & Care

Isbn 9783957633699
Publisher Revolver Publishing
Idea code 17069
€ 2.00

Sabine Schirdewahn’s fascination with Icelandic houses and the memories they hold is the inspiration for this series of photographs. In her exploration of “deserted” houses and interiors, many kept in pristine, museum-like condition by their family owners, Schirdewahn seeks out the tangible and intangible aspects of remembrance and privacy – how the special qualities of a place, personal histories, evidence of love and care, can be preserved and revisited, or likewise fade away. In her visits to multiple such houses scattered across the beautiful Icelandic landscape or set in fishing towns, she offers a glimpse of poverty, new opportunities, and the narrative of memory in the modern age.

Marianna Rothen Shadows In Paradise

Isbn 9783906217086
Publisher B.frank Books
Idea code 17061
€ 59.15

Published with Marianna Rothen’s first New York solo exhibition, at Steven Kasher Gallery, this second monograph by the photographer once again delves into a complex meditation on femininity. Through an opaque narrative suggestive of passion, loneliness, intrigue, and betrayal, Rothen’s latest series features strikingly beautiful characters styled in vintage costume and lingerie, creating a 1960s aesthetic. Shot at a location in the Catskills in upstate New York, its natural setting is, at first glance, idyllic. Yet all is not well in paradise, where the presence of a gun and a deteriorating house visually connect with the anxiety and melancholy of Rothen’s carefully staged scenes.

Christof Nussli - Withheld Due To:

Isbn 9783952471005
Publisher Cpress
Idea code 17057
€ 31.20

In this “book” (or unbound collection of folded pages) Christof Nüssli tackles one of the greatest torture scandals of recent times, using material such as images and files from Abu Ghraib prison and the War on Terror released by the United States government. He calls upon viewers to question what they see, and to face the feelings these images evoke while looking at them. Can such images shock, despite not showing anything shocking? Does a censored transparency still create transparency? Redacted documents, close-ups of isolated body parts, vague bruises and marks on the skin... many disturbing questions emerge as only the surface of this sordid narrative is touched upon.

Elena Tutatchikova - After An Apple Falls From The Tree, There Is A Sound

Isbn 9784907562090
Publisher Torch Press
Idea code 17056
€ 34.40

Born in Moscow, Tokyo-based artist Elena Tutatchikova looks to the memory of childhood as the theme for this series, which she has worked on since 2009. Her camera follows children from a Russian village surrounded by nature as they swim in the river or wander in the woods. In a land of long, cold winters, summertime has special meaning. Yet the children experience the quiet onset and passing of summer’s bright days unawares of its deeper significance. This shift in the seasonal cycle is metaphorically expressed in the sound of an apple falling. Simultaneously ephemeral and nostalgic, her photographs gently touch hidden memories through their universal sensibility.

Mariken Wessels: Taking Off. Henry My Neighbor (Reprint)

Isbn 9789490800345
Publisher Mariken Wessels
Idea code 15306
€ 59.00

'Taking Off' is a real picture story of a failed marriage, of sexual frustration and voyeurism. An extraordinary amount of photographs and cut-up collages comprise an archival vertigo of amateur nude art. Through people she met on a journey through the United States, Mariken Wessels gained access to the studio and the entire archive of Henry, as well as full consent over its use. She started redacting the work and rearranging it, so to form an artist's book, in which the audience will be invited to a journey into Henry’s vision of his wife and muse, and to discover the photographic obsessions of Henry, which through encountering them in the book could become our obsessions too.
