Henk Wildschut - Ville De Calais

Isbn 9789082588507
Publisher Henk Wildschut
Idea code 17164
EUR 55.00

Nearby the harbour city of Calais in France, a parallel world has existed for more than ten years. Here, refugees from Africa and the Middle East await their chance to cross the Strait of Dover and reach the United Kingdom. Since 2005 photographer Henk Wildschut has followed the increasing stream of migrants whose journeys end in limbo outside Calais. Gradually, their forest camps have grown to resemble a city, with houses, restaurants, churches, mosques, and libraries. The paths have become a road network, and toilets and electricity have been provided. Rather than capture personal stories and portraits, Wildschut documents the physical traces of these “invisible” people.

Craigie Horsfield - How The World Occurs

Isbn 9789076417240
Publisher Centraal Museum
Idea code 17100
EUR 35.00

This monograph, published in conjunction with exhibitions in Utrecht and Lugano, presents new artworks by British artist Craigie Horsfield. Each city provides the context for the artist’s new work, as the museums’ collections share a deep interest in paintings belonging to the Northern European tradition, something that connects in unique ways with the physical manifestation of Horsfield’s oeuvre, where he assumes the role of messenger or guide, one who questions the truth of reality and seeks to look beyond that which unites us to the phenomenal world and to one another. With a foreword by the artist, plus critical analyses by Nancy Princenthal and Bruno Fornari.

Courts 02 By Ward Roberts

Isbn 9780646955421
Publisher Editions Edizioni
Idea code 17178
EUR 41.05

Following the release of ‘Courts 01’ (2012), photographer Ward Roberts expands upon his comprehensive body of work documenting various sporting courts in Hong Kong, Bermuda, Hawaii, New York, and Melbourne. Basketball and tennis courts are just two of his most obvious subjects, which can appear in a surprising number of manifestations, states of repair, colours, and contexts. The courts are devoid of people, rendering them at once familiar and foreign. The lifeless spaces lie dormant in a perpetual state of waiting, poised to fulfil their function at any moment in an explosion of activity, yet ironically still missing a key element. With a foreword by Jennifer Krasinski.

Roshan Adhihetty - Nacktwanderer

Isbn 9783906822136
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 17171
EUR 49.75

In his series of images of nude hikers, Swiss photographer Roshan Adhihetty offers glimpses into a world previously unknown to many. To learn more about their great yearning to be at one with nature, he joined a group of nude hikers, documenting their trips over several years. His images show majestic green landscapes in which European men and women hike naked through Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Seemingly incongruous in a Western context, the pictures examine the relationship between the naked body and nature, playing on the tension between a romantic ideal of human existence and the restrictions of our modern world through unadorned vulnerability.

Els Vanden Meersch: Mastering The Curtains

Isbn 9789490800611
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 17136
EUR 18.50

The result of a four-year research project by artist Els Vanden Meersch touching on two perspectives in Iran, one public, the other hidden. The first approach focuses on the content and implementation in the public space of the popular and politicised form of street theatre, Tazi’yeh. The second explores the secretive world of the Sufis and their difficulties within the current political policy. These seeming opposites share common ground in Iranian collective memory via social and spiritual resistance. Reflections on religion, private and public, transparency and control, are mediated through a series of images, from which the social potential of secular mysticism emerges.

Peter Fraser Two Blue Buckets

Isbn 9783941249073
Publisher Peperoni
Idea code 17135
EUR 51.70

According to the introduction by Gerry Badger, Peter Fraser “has always been aware of a scientific imperative underpinning his imagery… science and scientific philosophy inform his work fundamentally.” The photographs in this series, which primarily take ordinary domestic objects as their subjects, are considered excellent in formal and technical respects, especially with regard to the handling of colour. But that is not the point – instead, Fraser is asking “Why?” The series was first published in 1988. Revisiting these images 30 years later puts new emphasis on Fraser’s body of work and its development over the years. Includes a conversation with Fraser and David Campany.

Cecilia Edefalk Photography 227 Months

Isbn 9789188031426
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 17147
EUR 38.10

Cecilia Edefalk may be best known for her painting, but the Swedish artist’s work is characterised by a photographer’s eye. In exploring the limits of the medium, the analogue photographic process becomes an investigation into man’s ambivalent nature and how the self relates to the world. Her manner of representation and figuration often works as a catalyst for consciousness and awareness of reality. This book was created by Edefalk in close collaboration with graphic designer Maja Kölqvist, and deals exclusively with the artist’s photography. A conversation with Anders Johansson, along with essays by Estelle av Malmborg and Daniel Birnbaum, sheds new light on her oeuvre.

Kumi Hiroi & Anneke Hymmen - Remodeling

Isbn 9789090301945
Publisher Hiroi & Hymmen
Idea code 17149
EUR 36.00

‘Remodeling’ is a collaboration between art director Kumi Hiroi and photographer Anneke Hymmen that lies somewhere between an analytical and intuitive approach to image making. To what extent are our preferences and ideas about beauty really our own? In closely examining the fashion industry, the pair dissects the images in fashion magazines through various keywords used to describe them. Anneke, drawn by the relationship between people and their environment, captures the energy of the models. Kumi acts as the storyteller, threading a structure that runs through the entire project. Includes six written contributions inspired by these visual re-readings.

Daido Moriyama: Record 33

Publisher Akio Nagasawa
Idea code 17156
EUR 30.80

In this instalment of ‘Record’, Daido Moriyama relates a pictorial narrative of his experiences walking around the streets of Tokyo on October 29, 2016. This particular Saturday morning began like any other, with the photographer, camera perpetually in tow, heading down to the coffee shop near the park at Ikebukuro station’s west exit. But a decision to skip making pictures in the Nakano-Asagaya neighbourhood as planned, and instead spend the day in Ikebukuro, leads to an unexpected encounter with a Halloween parade. As Moriyama writes, “Problem is, I hate Halloween.” Nevertheless, he took a deep breath and dove into the crowd to valiantly snap more photographs.

Takashi Homma: Various Shaped Hoses

Publisher Lim Art
Idea code 17062
EUR 30.80

Photographer Takashi Homma began producing a series of books as an homage to Edward Ruscha in 2014, with each publication taking a new form through its changing subject matter. While the technique is an imitation of Ruscha’s 1964 book ‘Various Small Fires’, this fifth instalment in the series attempts its own adaption of the original by focusing on a theme not examined by Ruscha. Thus we are presented with all manner of hoses, but mostly garden hoses, looping and snaking randomly as they were abandoned after the last use. Also, as the title suggests, one of the hoses is actually a snake.

Nao Tsuda: Iheya Izena

Isbn 9784990717360
Publisher Lim Art
Idea code 17064
EUR 33.00

In revisiting Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture many times, and the islands of Iheya and Izena in particular, photographer Nao Tsuda set out to document the lives and culture of the Ryukyuan, the indigenous people of the Ryukyu Islands that are strung between southern Japan and Taiwan. Ryukyuans are Japan’s largest minority group, yet their culture has been severely embattled since the 19th century, especially in Okinawa with its more recent history of United States occupation. As Tsuda notes, the reality of these people reveals a great deal of difference from mainland Japan, with unique religious practices, female priests, and sacred sites. This book is a testament to their struggle.

Nao Tsuda: Naga

Isbn 9784990717353
Publisher Lim Art
Idea code 17063
EUR 35.20

Photographer Nao Tsuda’s fieldwork documenting indigenous peoples in various parts of the world continues with his second book, for which he visited the Naga people, native to the border region between north-eastern India and Myanmar. During two trips in 2013 and 2014, he collected a wealth of images of his encounters with closely knit villages and clans who live by farming and hunting. Tsuda’s fascination with these inhabitants of the high mountain ridges and thick forests is clear, especially because the Naga have managed to maintain their traditional culture despite the rise of Western influences and a more recent blending of Christianity with their indigenous animism.

Alberto Garcia- Alix - Moto

Isbn 9788493968250
Publisher Cabeza De Chorlito
Idea code 17105
EUR 53.15

Spanish photographer Alberto García-Alix remembers when, as a young teen, he first encountered motorcycles – the scream of the roaring engines, the intoxicating smell of castor oil – and immediately became obsessed. Now, more than four decades since he first rode a motorcycle, he presents a photographic tribute to these two-wheeled monsters and the people for whom they are a lifestyle that borders on religion. Harley-Davidsons, Triumphs, tattooed arms, denim jackets covered in patches, full leathers, biker gangs, and the freedom of the open road all come together in this series of skilfully framed and shot black-and-white images. With a nostalgic text by García-Alix.

Pierre Crom - War In Ukraine

Isbn 9789462262058
Publisher Lecturis
Idea code 17148
EUR 30.80

‘War in Ukraine’ by photographer Pierre Crom is a testimony of the events that took place in Ukraine after the removal from power of the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych. The photographer visited the country several times between February 2014 and January 2016 and visually recorded the onset and course of the war. On the day of the MH17 disaster, Pierre Crom was already in Donetsk, close to the place where the plane was shot down. In order to visualise the context of the drama, he stayed there for long periods of time and returned several times. This book is an extraordinary photographic document that tells the story of the annexation of Crimea, the start and continuation of the war, the MH17 drama and the events surrounding it.

Publisher Radius Books
Idea code 17121
EUR 64.20

As a small boy growing up in the Japanese countryside, photographer Masao Yamamoto enjoyed looking up at the sky. From his classroom window, he would gaze at the windblown clouds, mesmerized by airborne creatures such as birds, butterflies and winged insects. He sometimes dreamed of riding on the back of a bird and flying away to faraway places. Yamamoto’s career as a photographer began in 1993. Throughout his career, Yamamoto has often returned to animals, particularly birds, as a subject, reflecting his childhood fascination with the creatures and his eternal commitment to the unity of humanity and nature.

Futagawa received special authorisation to revisit the grandeur of Kyoto’s imperial residences and their gardens during each season of the year. These timeless images are decidedly different from any existing photos of these gardens, a masterful tribute to Japanese beauty.

Shipwrecks And Ruins Around The World

Isbn 9784861525742
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 17080
EUR 17.60

Playing into our mysterious fascination for things that history has forgotten, this small volume presents a collection of wrecked vessels and structures of all types, found in a variety of locations around the world. Beginning with ships that have foundered in shallow coastal inlets or against rocky headlands, or were left high and dry as waters receded, it continues with inland ruins that range from decrepit castles and abandoned mansions, to mining complexes, ironworks, and ghost towns. The geographic location of each object is pinpointed on a map, and a year and name (if known) are also given. One of the book’s three sections is dedicated exclusively to ruins in Japan.

Rene Groebli - Das Auge Der Liebe

Isbn 9783906822082
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 17151
EUR 48.10

First published in 1954, 'Das Auge der Liebe' (The Eye of Love) by the Swiss photographer René Groebli is a small book featuring images that were made during the honeymoon with his wife Rita in France. In Groebli's own words: "I tried to convey the typical atmosphere of French hotel rooms. There were so many impressions: the poor-looking furniture in a cheap hotel, the word 'Amors' embroidered on the curtains. And I was in love with the girl, the girl who was my wife. I think a series of photographs should be compared with a novel or even a poem rather than a painting: let us tell something!"
