Etnomanie - Ellie Uyttenbroek

Isbn 9789462083639
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 17266
€ 24.25

'Etnomanie' is a tribal style bible. Fashion stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek (known from Exactitudes) made a personal selection from the ethnographic photo collection of the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Using her eye for fashion, she selected 100 posed portraits, from the 1850s to recent ones, focusing on individual expression, silhouette, pose, outfit, styling, body adornment, accessories, and other fashionable details. The starting point was style, which is popularly understood to mean something like attitude, approach, habitus, bearing, modus, manner, and taste. In addition to historical information, Uyttenbroek reports her stylistic observations, making the viewer aware of the beauty and autonomous visual power of the different portraits.

Hilde Bouchez: A Wild Thing

Isbn 9789490800604
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 17265
€ 20.00

This book attempts to identify and describe the often elusive qualities we experience in everyday objects. What gives a specific glass, for instance, more “aura” or “mystical allure” than another? Some things seem to have a bright quality that speaks to the imagination, perhaps the result of the methodology and intent of the creator. Hilde Bouchez outlines this type of conveyance, emphasising a way to both design and experience things that centres on an essential oneness between humans, objects, and the cosmos. Essays explore the history of design, along with the latest tendencies within the field, ecological aspects of materials, and the quest for sustainability.

Earth Matters

Publisher Textielmuseum
Idea code 17313
€ 15.95

This book accompanies an eponymous exhibition at the Textiel Museum in Tilburg, in which curators Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano examine a new wave of innovative design that holds a deep respect for our planet at its core. According to them, “this young century will bring about an opportunity for reflection and radical change, making up for a century of ecological abuse, overconsumption, greed, and violence.” With the emergence of a post-fossil society, our understanding with nature is being reconceived. The exhibition brings together designers and artists who are investigating new ways of producing ideas, changing our mentality through a progressive body of work.

Japanese graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker, and painter Tadanori Yokoo achieved international recognition for his work during the 1960s. His great interest in psychedelia, mysticism, and the pop culture of the time led him to produce brightly coloured, intensely autobiographical works using complex, multi-layered imagery, but also posters for events by leading figures of the counterculture movement in Japan, like Tatsumi Hijikata, Juro Kara, and Shuji Terayama, that reflect a keen painterly expression. A retrospective look at Yokoo’s vibrant oeuvre, this book features more than 250 works, including prints, posters, and paintings, from the late 1960s up to 1990.

Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 17283
€ 44.20

Chika Higashi started Coci la elle in 2010, a Tokyo-based shop for handmade parasols that are painted or decorated with embroidery, and with no two alike. The brand name is a nuanced reference to the Japanese term ‘koshiraeru’, meaning “to make”. The rich expressions of these delicately crafted umbrellas can bring a splash of colour into any day – startling, pretty, and at times with a pinch of humour. Coci la elle has since branched out to include original print umbrellas, scarves, and accessories. Filled with beautiful photos, sketches, and inspirational mood boards, this book shows Higashi’s work yet is also a tribute to artisan umbrella makers, a skilled craft that is slowly disappearing.

Published in conjunction with an exhibition curated by Mathieu Lommen at the Special Collections facility of the University of Amsterdam, this book by design historian Frederike Huygen explores modernism in Dutch graphic design of the 20th century. Divided into three periods – pre-war, post-war, and from 1990 to the present – it emphasises the various aspects and meanings of the term “modernism”, and how its concept dominates the discourse on graphic design, through an extensive overview of the subject. Moreover, it questions the canon by including some less well-known examples of graphic design work, thereby giving recognition to an often underestimated complexity.
