El Croquis: RCR Arquitectes 1998 - 2014

Isbn 9788488386977
Publisher El Croquis
Idea code 17395
€ 105.75

This special issue combines previous features on RCR Arquitectes. Active since 1998 and winners the 2017 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the Catalan studio’s principles, Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, and Ramón Vilalta, have together developed a radical type of architecture that is both stylistically and physically grounded in its local context, as well as committed to nature. Its influences, however, are global, and although the firm has won many awards prior to the Pritzker, they were relatively unknown compared to other finalists. Key themes include connections between indoor and outdoor spaces, the passing of time, structure and materiality, and the dematerialisation of spaces.

A.MAG 11: Bechter Zaffignani/ Innauer Matt/ Bernardo Bauer

Isbn 9788469743553
Publisher Amag Publisher
Idea code 17341
€ 37.50

This instalment focuses on three Austrian practices which together symbolise an architecture that, at its essence, remains mindful to the surrounding context. Featuring works on different scales offering solutions to various functions and programmes, the projects represent a common ability to bring together local materials, traditional practices, and contemporary forms. Most examples are of smaller dimensions, with many being individual residences, and a number have been produced on tight budgets and with restrictive sites or regulations. Through careful materialisation and expression, each of these offices aptly demonstrates the strengths of Austrian architecture today.

A+U 561 17:06 De Vylder Vinck Taillieu

Isbn 4910019730675
Publisher Shinkenchiku-sha
Idea code 17379
€ 23.90

This issue examines works by architecten de vylder vinck taillieu, a practice based in Ghent which has increasingly gained international appreciation in recent years. With projects characterised by intervention and revitalisation, and that at times might seem kitsch or surrealistic, the office prefers to emphasise the stories that connect people and things to buildings, rather than provide objective, primary information. Seventeen works are introduced where the building’s own story is retold and developed, whether through a new addition, changed facade, or alternative approach to the existing space. With essays by Jan De Vylder, Gideon Boie, and Seng Kuan and Angela Pang.

Architecture in the United States has faced sweeping changes over the last twenty years, brought on by trends such as digital design, globalisation, and social design. Members of each the six featured practices have experienced these shifts in their formative years. Perhaps owing to improved accessibility of information and networking, their approach to architecture seems different from previous generations. While pursuing their own interests and affinities, they share a collective consciousness, form networks, and collaborate with peers in the same or different fields. With Office Kovacs, Bureau Spectacular, The LADG, Ellie Abrons, Mark Foster Gage Architects, and Young & Ayata.

AV Monographs 196: Carlos Jimenez 30 Years, 30 Works

Publisher Avisa
Idea code 17332
€ 34.10

From his first buildings completed in Houston, Texas, in the 1980s and ’90s, which earned him international recognition, Carlos Jiménez’s architecture has evolved to address different scales and programmes. Yet at the same time his vision has maintained an attention to context, interest in typological research, and a pursuit of total complicity with the client. Covering three decades of work, this monograph is illustrated with the architect’s sketches and photographs by Paul Hester. Starting from the Carlos Jiménez Studio, an ongoing project begun in 1983 and also the architect’s professional studio, all of the featured projects are in the United States, with many in Houston.

Arquitectura Viva 195: Memorials

Isbn 02141256
Publisher Avisa
Idea code 17330

Remembering the dead may have been the very first purpose of architecture, and this function survives in the mementoes built as reminders of 20th-century wars and genocides. Eduardo Prieto gives a history of modern memorials, followed by coverage of six recent works commemorating battles and slaughters of the last hundred years or so, among them: the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette Memorial in France, built on the occasion of the centenary of World War I, the Katyn Museum in Warsaw, which recalls the slaying of Polish military officials in 1940, and the Space of Memory in Lima, which honors those killed by terrorism in Perú during the last two decades of the century.

Oase 98: Narrating Urban Landscape

Isbn 9789462083547
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 17376
€ 22.30

'OASE 98' explores the historical foundation of the concept of narration in reading and designing the urban landscape, in search of the relevance of narrative methods to today’s practice. This issue presents a new angle on the work of (landscape) architects and urban planners of the 1960s and 1970s (Edmund Bacon, Kevin Lynch, and Jacques Simon) and of today (Günter Vogt, Anke Schmidt, and Bas Smets), and sheds light on recent experiments in academia. 'OASE 98' presents narration as a means with which to reposition design and the designer as a mediator between the expert and the inhabitant, addressing issues such as bodily experience, sociospatial fragmentation, and participation.

Zaha Hadid In Italy

Isbn 9788822900999
Publisher Quodlibet
Idea code 17362
€ 21.50

Zaha Hadid’s success is no doubt linked to her capacity to build images of remarkable power. This volume, published with an exhibition at MAXXI, is not just a tribute to the great architect. Instead, she is portrayed in terms of her relationship with Italy and interest in its culture. The dynamic inspirations of the Baroque period in Rome, the kaleidoscopic visions of Futurism, and the experimental research of Luigi Moretti and Pier Luigi Nervi are just some of the explicit references in her work. Moreover, it is precisely the plastic use of concrete – tested by Italian engineers during the post-war years and since abstracted – that is manifested in her architecture, in Italy and elsewhere.

C3 391: Wood More Than Wood

Isbn 20925190
Publisher C3 Publishing
Idea code 17391
€ 27.25

This edition presents two themes: wood and small-scale residential solutions. The first addresses wood as an age-old construction material, focusing on its ‘biotechnology’ aspects and intrinsic characteristics. It features eleven recent wood buildings by offices such as Ateliers Jean Nouvel, White Arkitekter, and Graham Baba Architects. The second theme looks at designs for smaller housing spaces and dwellings that are somehow related to the notion of temporary use, in answer to today’s urban lifestyle and introducing flexibility, new sharing systems, and a more communitarian way of life. It highlights projects by Pereda Pérez Arquitectos, EZZO, Arqmov Workshop, and more.

Isbn 9782373820072
Publisher Hyx Editions
Idea code 17357

Eileen Gray was one of the most emblematic figures of the art deco and modernist movements, having developed a new and intimate form of architecture over her 50-year career. Through her projects, and with great independence with regard to her contemporaries and critics, she anticipated the eternal movement of sensitivities, optimising the relation between space and furniture, defying conventions and uses, and advocating a return to emotion. This monograph is published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou. The book features and illustrates many of Gray’s designs and interiors, with essays by Cloé Pitiot, Renaud Barrés, and Tim Benton.
