Publisher Culturgest/ Serralves
Idea code 17563

American artist Gordon Matta-Clark is perhaps best known for the site-specific artworks he made in the 1970s. His body of work includes performance and recycling pieces, space and texture works, and his “building cuts”. Matta-Clark used a number of media to document his work, such as film, video, and photography, much of which appears in this catalogue, itself published on the occasion of an eponymous exhibition at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto, and Culturgest, Lisbon. The attractively designed book includes numerous of the artist’s own sketches and plans for various works, plus letters and other material that together form an in-depth portrait.

Tracey Emin The Memory Of Your Touch

Isbn 9789491245190
Publisher Xavier Hufkens
Idea code 17527
€ 35.00

British contemporary artist Tracey Emin planned and created the exhibition ‘The Memory of Your Touch’ after the passing of her mother in autumn 2016. Her new art is full of grief, mourning, and the longing for the touch of someone now absent. Emin is known for her autobiographical and confessional artwork, and she often uses the human figure to express emotion. The body she draws, paints, and models is her own, and the nude is at the heart of her acute engagement with the history of art – whether ecstatic, sensual, hungry, triumphant, agonised, or broken by grief. Rich with abstract, emotive expressions, this exhibition catalogue revolves around touch and memory.

Anja Lutz - Marginalia

Isbn 9783941644007
Publisher The Green Box
Idea code 17523
€ 30.10

'Marginalia' draws our attention towards the territory of the overseen elements coexisting in the realm of the book itself. Text and image content of several art books designed by Anja Lutz withdraw to let appear the non-descript details: the margins, the edges, the backgrounds, the spaces between the lines … Each book is unique in its choice of format, material, layout, and rhythm. The selected pages underwent a process of transformation in which with surgical precision Lutz dissects them, layer by layer, removing the vital parts and revealing their skeleton. The results are filigrane grids, fragments of images and traces of the layout that form intricately layered compositions of voids, exposing the hidden relations between the pages.

Bruno Munari - Art Theorems

Isbn 9788887942347
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 17561
€ 17.45

First published by Scheiwiller in 1961 the Milanese master’s historic 'Theorems on art' is added to the Block notes series (punched silver cover), conceived and directed by Bruno Munari. The book includes a sharp and amusing collection of brief considerations about art which still make us smile and reflect today. 'Theorems on art' has a new cover and it plays with Munari’s schemes. It still has the holes but the silver cover has been replaced by pure white and next to the name of the series /03 is added, to indicate the year Corraini decided to start playing again with these books that, through the idea of the hole, embody the power of curiosity and stimulus for creativity.

Alessandro Perini: Operation Olympiad (Limited Edition Signed & Numb)

Isbn 9788885449046
Publisher Danilo Montanari
Idea code 17462
€ 64.50

Curious in both its content and form, Alessandro Perini’s ‘Operation Olympiad’ says as much about its creator as it does of the subject it represents. As part of his Missing Games Project, the book addresses the significance of Japan’s Olympic history in light of Tokyo again being selected to host the 2020 Olympic Games, specifically the cancelled games of 1940. The event would have coincided with the 2600th anniversary of Japan’s imperial line, and full records of preparations for this symbolic occasion were kept and published by the International Olympic Committee. Perini presents archival material and mementos of a process controversial for its fusion of militarism and sport.

Publisher Uitgeverij De Kunst
Idea code 17531
€ 22.50

The emergence of Art Deco in France was a complex and fascinating process, in which couturier Paul Poiret played a key role. Poiret worked with many artists, architects, and photographers, including Raoul Dufy, Erté, Georges Lapape, Paul Iribe, Mallet-Stevens, and Man Ray. He surrounded himself with the work of Constantin Brancusi, Robert Delaunay, and Kees van Dongen, who was inspired by the extravagant parties Poiret gave. The Dutch In Paris 1789 - 1914

Isbn 9789068687422
Publisher Thoth
Idea code 17508
€ 29.90

Paris was the centre of the art world in the 19th century. Between 1789 and 1914, hundreds of artists from the Netherlands travelled to France’s capital, among them Johan Jongkind, George Hendrik Breitner, Vincent van Gogh, Kees van Dongen, and Piet Mondrian. Their interactions with French artists and encounters with a great diversity of art, styles, motives, techniques, and perspectives profoundly impacted their approach and ideas about art. Upon their return, these artists spread new insights in the Netherlands, but also left their own traces behind in Paris. This richly illustrated book tells the story of these creative exchanges through the lives of nine remarkable Dutch artists.

No Quarter Tune Andersen

Publisher The Architectural Publisher B
Idea code 17484
€ 35.00

Published with an exhibit of taxidermic sculptures and photography by visual artist Tune Andersen at the Theatre Museum in Copenhagen, this volume is filled with the nightmarish creations of a grotesque fascination. Birds with fish tails, rats with bird wings and heads, fish heads with antlers, beaks, or cat paws, eel faces worn like masks… Andersen is inspired by the age-old scientific process of identifying and preserving animal species, which reached its culmination in the 19th-century private cabinets of curiosities and rarities. Using the materials and methods of taxidermy, he constructs sculptures that arouse both reflection and disquiet in their macabre mimicry of animal forms.

The Art Of Civil Action

Isbn 9789492095398
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 17550
€ 22.50

Civil society around the world is increasingly dealing with global questions, whereby it also begins to assume transnational forms of organisation. The arts, with their ability to project alternative realities and communicate ideas, can play a key role in addressing public and political problems. In looking at different platforms, activist groups, and new forms of citizens’ initiatives, this book asks how cultural and art initiatives can both question and strengthen the civil domain. Social scientists, cultural theorists, activists, and artists explore how arts and culture can offer various strategies and forms of organisation for a locally rooted society in a globally connected context.
