Usha Doshi - Creating With Shapes

Isbn 9781527212138
Publisher Cos
Idea code 17579
€ 45.10

Produced by Usha Doshi, a member of COS design studio since 2007, this book explores the possibility of creating garments using seven basic shapes – square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, circle, oval, and octagon. According to Doshi, the conception of the method and techniques happened accidentally, as she observed her granddaughters experimenting with fabric cut-outs. She joined in, and soon discovered that these shapes could be used to form intricate folds, drapes, and pleats, without using excessive fabric or complex darts and seams. With clearly drawn diagrams and beautiful photography, the book is intended to inspire creativity across all disciplines.

Its theme, “mined”, is a play on words which explores the changeable and interrelated definitions of “mine”, “mind”, and “mined”. A mine, for instance, is an abundant source, yet because something is mine does not mean that it cannot be yours. It takes time, patience, and perseverance to dig up a treasure, while studying mined fragments can lead to a different perspective. The extensive content covers contextual, social, and information design, as well as approaches to design curating and writing.

American Overalls

Isbn 9784846531096
Publisher World Photo Press
Idea code 17555
€ 88.30

A tribute to overalls, a type of garment developed and used as protective clothing for working men and (later) women, this edition presents items from the Harris Collection of vintage denim and workwear. Overalls are most often made of denim and usually feature riveted pockets, similar to those on jeans. Countless advertisements, posters, and actual articles of clothing from manufacturers like Levi Strauss & Co. and OshKosh B’gosh, both founded in the latter half of the 19th century, as well as lesser-known makers like Finck’s, Headlight, Carhartt, and Keystone bring the history of overalls to life. This is for the true overalls fetishist, compiled by Charla Harris and Russ V. Miller.

Marco Zanuso Jr - Works

Isbn 9788875706302
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 17587
€ 36.30

"Out of all the projects I have worked on since the Eighties, I have chosen those which, for different reasons, seem to have been the most successful – even if I don’t believe they should ever be taken too seriously: even those that have been finished and turned out well can eventually be resumed, developed, explored and interpreted again and again. I consider them all as, more or less, still open projects. The 'unfinished' and 'almost finished', for me, are magical and have a special kind of beauty." Marco Zanuso Jr. 'Works' is the collection of all the accomplished, finished or unfinished ideas that architect Marco Zanuso Jr has gathered up to now, with the inclusion of his 1973 thesis as introduction to the text.

Jean Prouve - Double Volume

Isbn 9782909187204
Publisher Galerie Patrick Seguin
Idea code 17568
€ 198.70

Today the oeuvre of French architect and designer Jean Prouvé is considered essential to the history of twentieth century design. Prouvé’s furniture designs were determined by the interior spaces the pieces would inhabit, and were developed in tandem with Modernist principles of the “art of living” and “harmonious habitat” that were so characteristic of the time. This exquisitely produced and comprehensive volume is an enriched version of the original monograph published in 2007. It includes a collection of interviews with collectors and design professionals, a detailed biography of Prouvé by his daughter, Catherine Prouvé, and essays by design historian Raymond Guidot and architecture historian Catherine Coley.

Vincent Sardon: The Stampographer

Isbn 9781938221163
Publisher Siglio
Idea code 17509
€ 34.60

Using rubber stamps he designs and manufactures himself, Sardon commandeers a medium often associated with petty and idiotic displays of bureaucratic power, then uses those stamps not to assert authority, but to refuse it. He scours the Parisian landscape as well as the world at large, skewering the power-hungry and the pretentious, reveling in the vulgar and profane. In 'The Stampographer', there are insults in multiple languages, sadomasochistic Christmas ornaments, and a miniature Kamasutra with an auto-erotic Jesus.
