The Incomplete Writings Of Mark Dion - Selected Interviews, Fragments And Miscellany

Isbn 9789082783100
Publisher Fieldwork Museum
Idea code 17612
€ 45.00

Mark Dion is a prominent pioneer of environmental and ecological art. As a visual artist, he appropriates scientific methods of fieldwork, collecting, ordering, and exhibiting objects. He reflects on the visual representation of nature, engages in institutional critique, contributes to postcolonial discourse, and bears witness to the devastating impact of humankind on our natural environment. Nearly a hundred illustrated texts by Dion and interviews with the artist from the mid-1980s to the present are published in this book. His writings are characterised by curiosity, directness, and intellectual versatility. Often polemical and mildly ironic, they emphasise the urgency of his work.

Reflections - Rosemarie Trockel And Works From Turin Collections

Isbn 9788875706159
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 17585
€ 30.25

‘Reflections’ links a selection of works from Turin art museums to the oeuvre of German artist Rosemarie Trockel. The artworks were chosen by the artist together with curator Paolo Colombo, allowing an entirely new itinerary to unfold that stems from two motifs important to her own body of work: the portrait and ceramics. With allusions to “high” and “low” culture, Trockel reflects upon the human condition, as well as the artist’s role in a complex and multi-layered social representation of the individual. This catalogue accompanies a presentation of works at the Pinacoteca Agnelli gallery in Turin. With texts by Lisa Zeiger, Roger Cook, and Paolo Colombo.

Navid Nuur - Funnelflux

Isbn 9789492811066
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 17613
€ 25.00

Born in Tehran, visual artist Navid Nuur creates work that reflects a relation between concept and form. His forms materialise through a subjective programme of requirements or rules in which intuition is key. Although very conceptual at first sight, the process by which Nuur’s body of work is produced is strongly influenced by intuition and chance. His sculptures, installations, and text-based works often contain the essence of a certain material at their core. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of work by Nuur at Be-Part, Platform for contemporary art, in Waregem, Belgium, this book conjures the temporary, in-between state characterised by his work.

Peggy Guggenheim And Nelly Van Doesburg - Advocates Of De Stijl

Isbn 9789462084100
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 17584
€ 34.00

Together, Peggy Guggenheim (1898- 1979) and Nelly van Doesburg (1899- 1975) made a crucial contribution to art movement De Stijl. Not by making art, but by promoting, exhibiting, and buying De Stijl at a time when next to no one had faith in the geometric form language of Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian, and many others. It is partly due to their efforts that De Stijl was in the limelight shortly before and after the Second World War and that the movement was recognized internationally as one of the most important art movements ever brought forth by the Netherlands. This richly illustrated publication tells the story of two strong and liberated art ambassadresses in a world dominated by men.

Magritte, Broodthaers & De Hedendaagse Kunst

Isbn 9789491819759
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 17592
€ 9.95

The Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels hosts the exhibition 'Magritte, Broodthaers & Contemporary Art', in which they bring together over 50 masterpieces by René Magritte with a large number of modern and contemporary artworks. The central focus is on the dialogue that Marcel Broodthaers maintained with Magritte’s oeuvre: their shared interest in the writing of Mallarmé and exploration of the status of the object and language, lead to a new perspective on their relationship. This legacy is highlighted through works by modern and contemporary artists like Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, and César.

Ellen Gallagher Accidental Records

Isbn 9783906915104
Publisher Hauser & Wirth
Idea code 17619
€ 32.05

Published on the occasion of an exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, Los Angeles, this artist’s book investigates specific aspects of the work of Ellen Gallagher. Cycles recur in her oeuvre, and she often uses charged figuration in paintings, drawings, collages, and films that reveals itself slowly, first as intricate abstractions, then later as unnerving stories. Whether through playful photomontages, re-appropriated found materials, or veneered black paintings, her speculative approach gathers a broad range of references, engaging in paradoxes while also generating tension between minimalist abstraction and image-based narratives. With texts by Adrienne Edwards and Philip Hoare.

Haegue Yang - Lingering Nous

Isbn 9782840668909
Publisher Les Presses Du Reel
Idea code 17622
€ 37.65

This new monograph documents 21 installations conceived by Haegue Yang during the past decade, all constructed with venetian blinds. Yang is one of the most influential Korean artists of her generation, and many of her artworks attempt to provide sensory experiences through abstract narratives. Using various media she explores the sensual and formal properties of everyday objects and materials, taken out of their original context and rearranged into abstract compositions, investing them with a new, poetic meaning with political or emotional overtones. Her geometric, abstract constructions are in fact sensory experiences whose crux is an implicit critique of the modern.

Stephen Ormandy - Only Dancing

Isbn 9780987526878
Publisher Formist
Idea code 17534
€ 46.50

Long recognised as one half of Dinosaur Designs, artist and designer Stephen Ormandy has spent the last fifteen years expanding on his personal artistic practice. This is the first book dedicated to surveying his vibrant, large-scale oil paintings and the playfulness he brings to everything he does. As curator and critic Lilly Wei claims, “Ormandy’s signature works are based on sophisticated, audacious colour juxtapositions and organic forms, inspired by art but also the seductive curves of the human body and nature”. In them we recognise his fascination with Australia’s often bizarre native flora and fauna, as well as the natural topographies of the Great Barrier Reef and the outback.

Screening Literature - Acts Of Transformation In Contemporary Film And Video Installation Art

Isbn 9789188031501
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 17556
€ 25.30

Based on the doctoral thesis of Tanja von Dahlern, this book examines the ways in which literary works have been staged and transformed in visual art, specifically in the field of contemporary film and video installation since the mid-1990s. Focusing on artworks by Kutlug Ataman, Gerard Byrne, Stan Douglas, and Fiona Tan, it explores the role of literature in relation to cultural memory, as a place where narrative conventions are negotiated, and where cultural space is mediated and constructed. Transformation is discussed as an important element in our culture today, drawing on theories from intertextuality, intermediality, adaptation studies, and artistic appropriation.

Isbn 9789491435508
Publisher Witte De With
Idea code 17617
€ 26.00

This book comprises the largest monographic presentation of the work of Eric Baudelaire to date. His oeuvre has ceaselessly engaged with histories of images, cinema, radical militancy, and violence by or against the state. Spanning over a decade of artistic production (installation, print, photography, and film), it follows his attempts to find a form that reflects the catastrophic complexity of contemporary life, juxtaposing fictions that have documentary tendencies with documents that open fictional spaces. Research material fragments, images, texts, and chronologies that have informed Baudelaire's work process unfold throughout the volume as a large-scale “source book”.

The Human Figure In Islamic Art

Isbn 9788792949967
Publisher Strandberg Publishing
Idea code 17583
€ 55.00

The Human Figure in Islamic Art focuses on an unusually and rarely elucidated subject in the world of Islamic art: human depictions. Depictions of man were considered objectionable from an orthodox Muslim point of view since only God can create life, and man should not try to emulate God’s work. There was concern that depictions or those who were depicted could be worshipped, something that went against the dogma that only God, Allah, should be the object of worship. This book and the eponymous exhibition present 75 works from the David Collection, from utility ware to miniature paintings, divided into themes including The Religious Sphere, Depictions Of Women, Depictions Of Everyday Life, all introduced by an essay. Light is also shed on the mutual in influence of Islamic and European art.

Georg Gatsas - Signal The Future

Isbn 9783952471012
Publisher Cpress / Loose Joints
Idea code 17594
€ 39.80

Georg Gatsas went in search of the protagonists of the electronic dance music known as dubstep for this series, portraying the scene’s producers and dancers in images of intimate instantaneity. Considered a late successor to jungle, dubstep arose in the early 2000s as the sound of South London, a bass-heavy, decidedly melancholic hybrid of the older genre of dub with various forms of electronic music. Gatsas focuses especially on the scene in connection with record labels in London and Berlin, exploring how this bass-fuelled, conspicuously anti-celebrity underground can be seen as the last sub-culture to be linked to a certain urbanity that nevertheless eludes localisation.

This compendium of his plays builds on publications from the last ten years, the result of collaborations between critics, researchers, and the Guy de Cointet Society. The position of his oeuvre today is vastly different in comparison to a decade ago, having emerged from obscurity, while a careful reading of the notebooks he kept throughout the 1970s until his death in 1983 has spurred new insights. Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Eye Amsterdam)

Isbn 9789462084155
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 17519
€ 19.95

Apichatpong Weerasethakul navigates between feature film production and the assembly of spatial film installations in museums. He makes films that are about his native soil – Thailand – and that actually take place there. In Weerasethakul’s films he creates his own universe filled with stories, people, folklore, views, and landscapes from his own surroundings. The themes he addresses are nevertheless global and link subjects such as trust, religion, connection to the landscape, magic, friendship, poverty, and beauty with existential questions about, for example, ‘reality’ or ‘death’.

Vicken Parsons - On Reflection

Isbn 9788494509667
Publisher Ivorypress
Idea code 17597
€ 30.90

'On Reflection' shows the most recent work by British artist Vicken Parsons, best known for her small-scale paintings of architectural spaces and landscapes. "Vicken Parsons’ paintings are visual poems", states Rachel Spence in the introduction to the catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition at Ivorypress in Madrid. "Delicate, diminutive, measured, rhythmically playful but strict on internal structure. Withholding clarity to open the way towards a more enduring light. Our gaze narrows to look at them just as our ear quickens to catch poetry’s music. We peer. Lean closer. Pause. Painting as comma of time as well as occupier of space."

Idea code 17623
€ 26.90

Curated by Emma Lavigne, director of the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the 14th edition of the international exhibition in Lyon features more than 50 artists. Amid rampant globalisation which is generating constant mobility and a quickening of flows – the “liquidity” of the world and identities – this book explores the legacy and reach of the concept of the “modern” in today’s art. Foremost are projects that challenge the abstraction of European modernity, in order to reassess its global reach. Participants include Cerith Wyn Evans, Hans Haacke, Jorinde Voigt, Nam June Paik, Marcel Broodthaers, Lara Almárcegui, Hans Richter, Terry Riley, Lygia Pape, and many more.

Hammershoi In The David Collection

Isbn 9788792949998
Publisher Strandberg Publishing
Idea code
€ 30.00

Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) was a member of the radical Copenhagen middle class at the turn of last century. He maintained close ties to his family throughout his life, and especially his wife, Ida, his sister, Anna, and the family’s homes were his favorite motifs. The best-known are his many interiors from Strandgade 30, kept to a palette of gray, green, and russet. Hammershøi also painted landscapes and portraits, however, and the David Collection has exquisite examples of all these genres. In Hammershøi in the David Collection, the Hammershøi expert Henrik Wivel writes about the artist’s life and art and provides an in-depth study of the 14 pieces in the David Collection in relation to his life and times.

Ignacio Tovar - Cantandote Bajito

Isbn 9788494619069
Publisher Cac Malaga
Idea code 17602
€ 51.70

This catalogue is published in conjunction with an exhibition at CAC Málaga looking back on the last two decades of work by Spanish artist Ignacio Tovar. He belongs to a generation of abstract artists that gained prominence in Seville during the transition from dictatorship to democracy, and today is considered one of the most important painters on the Andalusian art scene. Although the majority of Tovar’s works are dominated by colour and filly with vibrant hues, he is not one to be concerned with sensationalism or appearances – deliberately shunning gratuitous aestheticism and tending to seek the exact opposite. The book includes a critical text by Sema D’Acosta.
