Lous Martens - Animal Books For/ Dierenboeken Voor Jaap Zeno Anna Julian Luca

Isbn 9789492811073
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 17653
€ 34.00

Lous Martens has five grandchildren – Jaap, Zeno, Anna, Julian, and Luca – and has begun making an animal scrapbook for each newcomer to the family. Although it is seventeen years since the first, Jaap, was born, none of the five books are finished yet. Consisting of loosely pasted pictures of animals that were clipped from newspapers and magazines about art, literature, and science, plus stamps and photographs from advertising brochures, the books are enjoyable for their small, ever-evolving changes as new material is added. Interestingly, the books were never intended to be published, but are now grouped into one big volume, an embodiment of familial love and dedication.

Women House

Isbn 9782917217931
Publisher Manuella Editions
Idea code 18031
€ 35.65

Two notions intersect in the Women House exhibition in Paris (2017) and Washington (2018): a gender (female) and a space (the domestic sphere). The exhibition and this book reflect the complexity of possible points of view on the subject, which are not only feminist but also poetic and nostalgic. Women artists turn the house inside out: a symbol of isolation becomes a symbol of the construction of identity, the intimate becomes political, private space becomes public space and the body turns into a piece of architecture. According to different contexts and generations of artists, the house becomes a body-house, a homeland-house or even a world house. With works by, among others, Helena Almeida, Monica Bonvicini, Louise Bourgeois, Heidi Bucher, Lili Dujourie, Mona Hatoum, Zanele Muholi, Lucy Orta, Martha Rosler, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, Valie Export and Rachel Whiteread.

Musee Museum

Isbn 9789492574060
Publisher Grafische Cel
Idea code 18007
€ 32.25

This book is the outcome of a project initiated by artist Roel Kerkhofs, produced together with graphic design studio Dear Reader, (Eva Moulaert and Marie Sledsens) and writer Tina Ameel. It began in August 2014 as a residency in a neighbourhood in Brussels; a temporary museum in a specific area, where the homes were seen as archives and the residents as museum archivists. The project is very much inspired by the ‘Imaginary Museum’ of André Malraux. Filled with intriguing objects, it serves as a visual production platform where images from the private space receive renewed attention, and which aims to seek out the current value of the visible image in this context.

Yael Davids - Dying is a Solo

Isbn 9789492811097
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 18018
€ 25.00

Artist Yael Davids produces predominantly performance-based work, sometimes involving herself as performer and at other times working with groups. Her oeuvre considers the intersection of personal and political narratives, the collection, and collective heritage, and examines the body as a site of convergences and conflicts. Along with several other recent works and performances in Paris, Basel, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro, this publication presents her assemblage for documenta 14, a new sculptural work comprising armoured glass made by a factory in Kibbutz Tzuba, where she grew up. Born in Israel, Davids currently lives and works in Amsterdam.

Katinka Bock - Intenso

Isbn 9789492811134
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 18036
€ 28.00

Katinka Bock’s sculptures and installations emerge through intermediary, transitory, or precarious stages. Physical processes such as evaporation, heat, and the circulation of flows are apparent, often through the alteration of materials by interaction with the external environment. This book marks the occasion of three exhibitions that Bock will present in the space of one year, and is conceived as a preamble to the series of shows. Produced in close collaboration with Roger Willems and Louis Lüthi, it focuses on what Bock describes as the “periphery” in her work: photographs that show surfaces, fragments, objects, actions, and forms at rest or manipulated by the artist.

Stephan Balkenhol

Isbn 9788494619083
Publisher Cac Malaga
Idea code 18037
€ 51.70

German artist Stephan Balkenhol began his sculptural process of figurative woodcarving in the mid-1980s. By placing the human figure at the centre of his work, he reintroduced it to contemporary sculpture. Balkenhol operates on the boundary between the modern and the avant-garde while respecting the legacy of traditional and classical sculpture. Although his oeuvre displays a rather pessimistic attitude of humankind and society, it also shows signs that suggest hope. This catalogue accompanies an exhibition of the artist’s work at CAC Málaga and features many of his freestanding, brightly painted wood figures, along with carved two-dimensional scenes and other objects.

Hermann Nitsch Atlas

Isbn 9788897753315
Publisher Viaindustriae
Idea code 18006
€ 25.50

This book looks at the work of Austrian avant-garde artist Hermann Nitsch, particularly his ritualistic and existential “public aktionen” under the Orgies Mysterien Theater. Presented through the documentation of these events as they were recorded (scored, directed, written down, photographed, published, and reported), this archiving method explores Nitsch’s performative practice, both in terms of how the performance is organised and by what means the organisation is effected by the original and primary scripts the artist prepared for his own actions. The book includes detailed materials, among them images, sketches, texts, staging, choreography, sound, and music.

Hannelore Van Dijck The Lasting One, That Didn't Last, That Still Lasts

Isbn 9789490800741
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 18032
€ 35.00

Belgian artist and draughtswoman Hannelore Van Dijck produces minute and highly textured charcoal drawings that often cover entire surfaces, whether they be walls, floors, sheets of paper, or textiles. Although her drawings might seem abstract at first, they are essentially hyperrealistic. Often the differences she introduces are subtle and nuanced, and therein lies their power. They can be described as graphic interventions – small dashes, circular or geometric motifs, lines resembling wood grain, smudges – that appear natural in a way, and as such, become part of the architecture or environment. This artists’ book coincides with an exhibition of Van Dijck’s work at Be-Part in Belgium.

Color Works, Solids And Models - Michiel van der Zanden

Isbn 9789492051165
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 18022
€ 16.00

In the years after his graduation Michiel van der Zanden (1979) has developed himself in a unique and consistent way into the artist he is today. His visual constructions contain both ironic lightness, as sincere wonderment and are rooted in pop culture, virtual games and the images from his childhood. Small oddities and props in his environment and the scenic decor in the border region with Belgium, trigger him. Ideas arise here. Van der Zanden takes his conscious observations, but also his personal memories and the collective past, into the digital world. Here he can examine his observations, magnify and manipulate them. Using 3D software he recreates these observations and puts them to his will.

The Desire Of The Medium

Isbn 9789491444401
Publisher Artez Press
Idea code 18008
€ 24.90

Most of Marc Boumeester’s thinking falls under affect theory, a philosophy of a new generation, which in its turn is fueled by Deleuzian scholarship. Boumeester formulates new and contemporary concepts that can be put into action in art and design education through an operational style called "intensive thinking". In the book, many interesting examples of educational programmes and works of art are accompanied by images relating to how this theoretical approach can be applied in art and design practice. Boumeester concludes that education in art and design is also about the design of education: what we learn and how we learn are inseparable.

Elena Narbutaite - Alex

Isbn 9789492811110
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 18009
€ 18.00

Elena Narbutaitė enjoys the nature of discovery. By offering the unexpected, she hopes to create social situations in which the audience can collectively experience surprise or confusion. ‘Alex’ is a lamp, a light programme, and an exhibition by Narbutaitė that began during a 2016 New Year’s Eve party in her Vilnius apartment. After bringing in the new year, the lamp travelled to Kunstverein München, where it was installed above a window at the foyer entrance, pointed directly into the eyes of visitors. This book marks the year-long event using text excerpted from the film ‘Exotica’ by Atom Egoyan, as well as text interventions by Bernardo José de Souza and Chris Fitzpatrick.

Stream 04: The Paradoxes Of The Living

Isbn 9782954096971
Publisher Stream
Idea code 17651
€ 31.20

The fourth instalment of the annual publication at the intersection of architecture, art, and economy explores the figure of the living as the key to contemporary challenges. For us to move beyond simply observing the Anthropocene requires that we find a position from where to act, one that is above and beyond modern dualisms, by articulating new, paradoxical, and sometimes antagonistic relationships with the living. Contributions by experts in various fields of knowledge and expertise offer us an opportunity to rethink our relationship with both ecosystems and new technologies in a time of great climatic disruption, and to address the essential notion of cohabitation.

Publisher MMCA

Featuring more than 160 artworks (paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs) it focuses on the efforts of a group of Egyptian artists who believed that making art was an instrument to acquire freedom, and highlights the role that artists and art have played in movements that led to the independence of many countries which experienced colonial occupation in the 20th century. With essays by Park Joowon and Salah M. Hassan.

Museum Of Capitalism

Isbn 9781941753156
Publisher Inventory Press
Idea code
€ 39.00

The Museum of Capitalism in Oakland, California, treats capitalism as a historical phenomenon. This speculative institution views the present and recent past from the implied perspective of a future society in which our economic and political system is memorialized, and subjected to the museological gaze.Sketches and renderings of exhibits and artifacts, combined with relevant quotations from historical sources, are interspersed with speculative essays on the intersections of ecology, race, museology, historiography, economics and politics. Included are representations of artworks and museum exhibits created by artists Oliver Ressler, Sayler / Morris, Dread Scott, Temporary Services, and others, original Isotype graphics drawn from the Museum’s lexicon of “capitalisms,” and texts from Lucy Lippard, Lester K. Spence, T.J. Demos, Chantal Mouffe, McKenzie Wark and Kim Stanley Robinson, among others.

Odd Nerdrum - Making Painting Great Again

Isbn 9789187543609
Publisher Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing
Idea code
€ 70.40

Nerdrum’s idea of making painting great again means reintroducing a quality concept. Again, one should be allowed to say, "I've made something wonderful, and I'm proud of it." It is no coincidence that Aristotle is the thinker who has most influenced the kitsch philosophy. He claims that craft has its utility and value as a means of mediation. Mimesis, or representation, is of value, not only because one finds joy and insight in recognizing a motif, but because one can recreate action in a painting. All human feelings take form in action. Stories that utilize familiar scenes and archetypal situations are, according to Aristotle, of the greatest value, because they are expressions of the universal.

Jelle Martens & Raimundas Malasauskas: After The Midst

Isbn 9789490800703
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 18189
€ 20.00

‘After the Midst’ is ostensibly a reportage of sorts about a yearly arts festival in Ghent, Belgium. Yet it is also much more than that. The interdependent artistic work centre and cultural platform Gouvernement asked around 20 artists to be masters of ceremony for the festival. Their commissioned task was to immerse the audience in ideas of jubilation, transcendence, and related rituals. Daily actions ignited from a visual, theatrical, or musical spark, drawing on well-founded ceremonial heritage. This publication presents a layered document of the festival’s aftermath, the physical traces left behind. With graphic design by Jelle Martens and text by Raimundas Malašauskas.

Woorden Worden Werken - Schrijven Onderweg Naar Een Eigen Taal

Isbn 9789492574046
Publisher Grafische Cel
Idea code
€ 16.15
