North North West 02 Zeinstra Van Gelderen Architecten

Isbn 9789461400505
Publisher Architectura & Natura
Idea code 18096
€ 49.50

Zeinstra van Gelderen architects works on a variety of commissions that include architecture, urbanism, public space, and interior design. The practice is drawn towards exploring the issues that somehow are related to architecture, art, and society. Subsequently, they try to pursue the realisation of the designs that follow from this exploration. It’s not so much the particular scale, but more the experimental challenge they set themselves as designers. The cooperation between Mikel van Gelderen and Jurjen Zeinstra started in 1990, when both were working as editors for the architectural magazine Oase. After winning the Europan competition with their entry ‘High-density open space’ (1996, together with Ira Koers) this cooperation has become solid and resulted in the design and realisation of many projects.

C3 Special: Post-Industrial Conversions

Isbn 20925190
Publisher C3 Publishing
Idea code 18076
€ 30.40

The taste for industrial aesthetics, just one of many reasons for the popularity of industrial conversions today, saw its beginnings during the age of post-war modernism, popularised by architects such as Le Corbusier, Gropius, and Mies van der Rohe. Yet the trend to rethink industrial structures also signals the imbalance of production and consumption that has arisen since the 1970s. Currently, however, rehabilitation initiatives are bringing production back to the city through projects like the thirteen examples in this special issue. Included are the Baltic Station Market by KOKO architects, Zeitz MOCAA by Heatherwick Studio, Malmö Market Hall by Wingårdh, and The Silo by COBE.

This historical document will highlight both his most relevant and less known work through texts, archival materials and photography. The book contains interviews with his contemporaries such as John Habraken and Herman Hertzberger and essays that each emphasize a different aspect of his work and the context in which it came into being.

Nenge - By Yuichi Ikeda, Eisuke Komatsubara

Isbn 9784861526435
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 18087
€ 36.85

‘Kado’ is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, and the fact that artistically arranging plants and vessels has become a culture in its own right is closely related to religious elements and flower offerings in Shinto and Buddhism. It is just one aspect that is representative of the deep connection to nature within Japanese culture. Its people have honed their sense of beauty through their sensible perception of the impermanence inherent in plants. This book neither draws on currents of the traditional ‘kado’ nor follows Western styles of flower arrangement. Ignoring rules and conventions, designer and chef Shinichiro Ogata aims to communicate a new, daring notion of “contemporary flowers”.
