Footnotes For The Panther: Conversations Between William Kentridge And Denis Hirson

Isbn 9780994700933
Publisher Fourthwall Books
Idea code 18119
€ 39.40

William Kentridge asked Denis Hirson to join him in a public conversation at the Jeu de Paume, Paris, in June 2010. It was such a rewarding experience that they decided to have further conversations, public and private, whenever the time and occasion seemed right. Nine engagements followed, in places as diverse as Paris, Johannesburg, and Amsterdam, allowing the two to explore at length the many issues and themes arising from Kentridge’s work. These conversations, in which a writer and an artist grapple with the complexities of making art, grow out of a friendship that is deeply entwined with the city where they both grew up and the country that is the wellspring of their work.

F.R.DAVID Spring 2018 - Flurry

Isbn 9780995713352
Publisher Uh Books / Kw Institute
Idea code 18084
€ 10.40

According to editor Will Holder, ‘Flurry’ came about after being asked to propose ten books for acquisition by the Gerrit Rietveld Academie library in Amsterdam. He gave a talk about that selection, for which he preferred reproducing original material over commentary, and wanted to allow others to speak. The outcome was a reading back and forth between the ten books. It soon became clear that this reading would readily lend itself to an issue of ‘F.R. David’. Associated material came up in the process of transcription. Included are writings by Emmie McLuskey, Krist Gruijthuijsen, Bitsy Knox, Maurin Dietrich, Camille Pageard, Frances Stark, Eileen Myles, and more.

Academy Of Tal R In Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Isbn 9789069183039
Publisher Boijmans Van Beuningen
Idea code 18069
€ 29.95

Published on the occasion of a broad survey of Tal R’s oeuvre over the past 20 years, this volume documents the extraordinary show at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and adds a personal perspective, emphasising the tactile quality of the artist’s work. The Danish artist is particularly known for the way he transforms everything in his environment into art. His work appears wild and vital, with a knowingly playful, almost absurdist tone, and he freely combines various styles, media, and materials, including painting, sculpture, installation, collage, drawing, prints, artist’s books, and furniture. Essays by Sjarel Ex, Roos van der Lint, and Esmee Postma provide insight.

Dadara - Open Your Mind So We Can Use Your Data

Isbn 9789082194456
Publisher Kochxbos Publishers
Idea code 18131
€ 45.00

Daniel Rozenberg, who works under the artist name Dadara, began his career in the early 1990s designing flyers and record covers for the up-and-coming electronic dance scene in Amsterdam. Both avant-garde and postmodern, the enigmatic artist, designer, and cartoonist has since accomplished numerous works, most notably interactive performance installations in public space since the early 2000s. He is a master in recognising how place can influence the power and influence of the work. Dadara’s practice is a kind of tweaked mirror which reflects our society, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. Perhaps a black mirror, but one that has a rainbow at the end of the tunnel.

Ini-Minimalism 1 Minimal Art For Little People

Isbn 9780648106104
Publisher Twodot Publishing
Idea code 18068
€ 24.00

This is minimalism for little people, a stack of colourful foldouts with different shapes cut out of each panel and a funny geometric creature hiding behind the artwork. But the bold, bright design also has a wider appeal. Conceived by Eva Dijkstra, a Dutch designer and co-founder of Toko graphic design studio, the cards are clever examples of less is more. Dijkstra’s practice covers branding and digital, spatial, and print design, and her output is intelligent, beautiful, and concept-driven, regardless of whether the brief is large or small. ‘Ini-minimalism’ is published by Twodot books, which aims to give children an introduction to art, design, geometry, colour, abstraction, and minimalism.

10 Landscapes: Documentary / Inventory / Utopia

Isbn 9788897753384
Publisher Viaindustriae
Idea code 18050
€ 15.30

This book documents a residency research project (2007–2017) founded by viaindustriae, a cultural non-profit organization and a collective that aims at investigating the intermediate territories between art and architecture, new forms of communication, and activating the artistic message through different methods. Initially based on specific research into a marginal and radical rural-mountain landscape in Umbria that used “hypertextual” methods and projects to draw links between different sites and “thematic” landscapes, the outcome is a broad investigation, exhibition, and catalogue on public spaces, site-specific art practices, and interventions on landscape in Italy and beyond.

Gilbert & George - The Beard Pictures

Isbn 9781910844267
Publisher White Cube
Idea code 18077
€ 16.60

'The Beard Pictures' are violent, eerie, grotesque, lurid and crazed. They show a dream-like world of paranoia and destruction and madness. Their strange sickly colours and creeping, smashed up, absurd landscapes confront the viewer with relentless aggression. 'The Beard Pictures depict' a world bereft of reason, in which negotiation no longer exists. Gilbert & George take their place within 'The Beard Pictures' as intense, red, staring, empty-headed, and sinister versions of themselves. Their eyes are shadowed and bizarrely prettified. Mutant, impish explorers or dead-headed sentinels, they seem to look at, into and through the viewer. They look as though their spirits might have left their bodies.

James Geurts - Floodplain

Isbn 9780648262800
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 18116
€ 33.00

‘Floodplain’ illuminates the ongoing tension between nature and culture embodied by Australia’s Yarra River. The floods that Melbourne periodically experiences are physical manifestations of the profound lack of understanding that European settlers had of the river before they set about altering and developing it. Through a practice involving field research, archival material, site-specific interventions, and works on paper, James Geurts examines how the river has been dammed, widened, straightened, and rerouted, its banks encased in concrete and its marshlands covered. His project emphasises the dynamics of the ancient river and its turbulent relationship with colonisation.

The Quay Brothers - The Black Drawings

Isbn 9789491819803
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 18090
€ 39.90

In the mid-1970s the influential American stop-motion animators, Stephen and Timothy Quay, embarked on a series of dark graphite drawings, conceived as imaginary film posters. The twin brothers kept their first autonomous art project hidden for decades, allowing only a few glimpses to transpire in some of their animation classics, such as ‘Nuctura Artificialia’ and ‘Street of Crocodiles’. In hindsight these black drawings can be seen as a blueprint for their future work, revealing many of the themes and techniques that would come to life in their animation films. For the first time this publication offers an in-depth exploration of the formative graphic series.

Impressionism And Beyond - A Wonderful Journey

Isbn 9789068687521
Publisher Thoth
Idea code 18094
€ 29.90

This volume celebrates the period in the late 19th century when a group of artists in France began producing work that ran contrary to the prevailing academic opinions regarding paintings. Venturing into the countryside, they broke with traditions and rules and represented reality on their canvases with rapid, fluid brushstrokes. Published on the occasion of an exhibition curated by Fred Leeman at Singer Laren in the Netherlands, the catalogue presents paintings and works on paper by impressionists and post-impressionists from the collection of the John and Marine van Vlissingen Art Foundation. Besides the popular early artists, it also includes later neo-impressionists and Fauvists.

This book aims to present the painter’s words as he wrote them, going back to the original sources of all of Mondrian’s manuscripts, typescripts, and personal papers.

Jens Fange

Isbn 9789188031570
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 18065
€ 37.40

At first glance, Swedish artist Jens Fänge’s body of work seems to be a fusion of early 20th-century collage and shadow play. It is predominated by paintings within paintings, and encompasses various genres, such as portraits and city- and landscapes, combined with geometric abstraction. Fänge subverts the ostensible order and clarity of his surfaces by injecting layers of dynamism, whether through flat, patterned fields or perspectives that challenge the eye. This catalogue accompanies an exhibition of his paintings at the Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm, and features numerous plates along with a critical essay by curator Magnus af Petersens, plus a conversation with the artist.

The Trade Of The Teacher - Visual Thinking With Mieke Bal Vis-A-Vis Series

Isbn 9789492095565
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 18138
€ 17.50

This book documents a series of conversations on the art of teaching between cultural theorist Mieke Bal and Jeroen Lutters. In a dialogue that also touches on the role of visual art, Lutters introduced paintings by Banksy, Rembrandt, Marlene Dumas, and George Deem as “teaching objects” and asked Bal to elucidate upon each. The result is a personal, meandering, and precise account of her way of thinking through visual art and literature, as well as how she exchanges ideas with students and colleagues. The text makes clear how objects can speak, how they are thought-images, and serves as a source of inspiration for both students and teachers of the arts and humanities.

Batia Suter - Parallel Encyclopedia 2 Revised Edition

Isbn 9789492811141
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 18109
€ 60.00

Batia Suter’s work intuitively situates found images in new contexts to provoke surprising reactions and significative possibilities. This volume follows on from the first ‘Parallel Encyclopedia’, published in 2007. Underlying themes of Suter’s practice are the “iconification” and “immunogenicity” of old images, and the circumstances by which they become charged with new associative values. “In my work, I collect groups of images based on various themes and characteristics, and I investigate how they can manipulate each other, depending on where and how they are placed. In the process of making this book, narrative lines unfolded before my eyes as I shifted images around.” This is a revised reprint.

Andrea Éva Győri uses watercolours to depict expressions of the female body and sexuality. The book’s three series draw upon knowledge from sexologist Dr Dania Schiftan, whose analyses and written interpretations complement the artist’s vibrant images. Győri’s artistic process is essentially a research project that explores new perspectives on femininity and the connections between body, imagination, and personal experience. She takes a physical approach, inviting women to masturbate while drawing them, or illustrating their corresponding fantasies and reveries. Moreover, she shares insights from a three-month “orgasm workshop,” a guidebook to female pleasure.

Isbn 9789081671347
Publisher Abn Amro
Idea code 18130
€ 27.50

Winner of the 2017 ABN AMRO Art Award, Saskia Noor van Imhoff is an artist who explores her surroundings in an idiosyncratic manner, and in doing so makes unexpected connections. The process of ordering, exhibiting, and archiving art plays a key role in her spatial installations, which force the viewer to observe and reflect in an unorthodox manner. This volume is published on the occasion of an installation she created at the Hermitage Amsterdam for the award. The exhibition makes associative links among unexpected elements such as architecture, interior space, culture, and nature. From it, questions emerge about growth, transitoriness, and the value of art.

Gary Schneider Handbook: South African Artists

Isbn 9780992226305
Publisher Fourthwall Books
Idea code
€ 38.75

In 2011, on a trip to South Africa for an exhibition, Gary Schneider began a series of handprint portraits of South African artists. Having grown up in South Africa, which he left in 1977 at the age of twenty-three, Schneider realised that this would not be an overview of South African art but rather a way to reconnect with a country that still has an enormous influence on his work. On several subsequent trips, he travelled widely to make handprint portraits in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown and Durban. Included in the book are seventy-seven handprint portraits. Each imprint is a record as singular and individual as a fingerprint but, at the same time, free of all the usual markers of physical identity.
