Batia Suter - Radial Grammar

Isbn 9789492811233
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 18273
€ 38.00

The imagery in Batia Suter’s ‘Radial Grammar’ revolves around radial shapes and concepts. The book uses of two separate layers of black ink, allowing Suter to create double images and merge patterns and screens. Departing from pages scanned from her collection of second-hand books on natural science, precision machinery, and art history, she freely manipulates and reorders them within the space of this volume, which can be seen as a condensed exhibition on paper. It is a journey along visual phenomena that reconnects us with the endless curiosity and patience of our younger selves leafing through an encyclopaedia, sensitive to its visual correspondences.

Dafy Hagai - Spring

Isbn 9780648262831
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 18261
€ 22.00

In her latest zine published by Perimeter Editons, Israeli photographer Dafy Hagai captures the drag and gender fluid scene in her hometown of Tel Aviv. She adds a new layer of complexity and fluidity to the visual languages and queer motifs with which she already established herself, with portraits of young queens shot amid the marginal urban spaces that punctuate Tel Aviv and Jaffa, and interspersed with images from the more lush surroundings of Sakhne (national park) and the Dead Sea. The series offers a glimpse into a gender dynamic that is as equally hard to define as its socio-geographical context, weaving the narrative of drag into the fabric of Israeli culture.

The Magazine & The New Photography: Koga And Japanese Modernism

Isbn 9784336062529
Publisher Kokushokankokai
Idea code 18177
€ 39.55

The New Photography in Japan, influenced by Germany’s ‘Neue Sachlichkeit’, the New Objectivity, and surrealism, differed strikingly from the pictorialism that had been the leading form of art photography prior to 1930. ‘Koga’ was a small-press magazine that remained in print for less than two years, yet featured a number of amateur photographers, largely from the Kansai region, who became a driving force behind the New Photography movement. The catalogue for an exhibition featuring photographs printed in ‘Koga’, this publication examines the influence of foreign photographers on the New Photography and subsequent modes of photographic expression in Japan.

Failed Images: Photography and its Counter-Practices Vis-A-Vis Series

Isbn 9789492095459
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 18245
€ 24.30

Edited by Ernst van Alphen, ‘Failed Images’ attempts to understand the divergence between photography and the reality it portrays, analysing the various ways the photograph transforms that which exists before the camera. Because the photographic medium enables very different practices, which in turn results in many kinds of images, it must also be examined from a perspective outside of the dominant approach to the medium, generally called the “snapshot”. This book therefore explores the photographic image by focusing on practices which refuse this conventional approach, namely staged, blurred, under- and overexposed, and archival photography.

Michael James Fox - Plastics

Isbn 9780995358676
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 18236
€ 26.80

Plastic is a densely loaded material and concept. One of the great scientific and industrial innovations of the late 19th and 20th centuries, plastic has become the all-pervasive staple of modern manufacturing, technology, and their speculative futures. In the same breath, plastic has become laden with a flood of negative connotations; it is the talisman of environmental degradation, the detritus of an unsympathetic petrochemical industry, and a signpost of global ill health. New York photographer Michael James Fox’s debut artist book 'Plastics' takes a very different vantage on this most complex of materials and ideas.

Tim Coghlan - Hell's Gates

Isbn 9780995358683
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 18238
€ 24.00

Melbourne-based designer and publisher Tim Coghlan has built his body of work around the results of both erratic and strategic searches using Google Images. Comprising lo-res, amateur, and public domain photographs of burning churches found online, ‘Hell’s Gates’ poses questions of iconography, typology, and the implications of images. How does mythology affect the way we read images and make meaning, and why are some images deemed impossibly offensive, while others not? Coghlan searches for the limits of the democracy of images in his work, addressing the ubiquity of digital images and other visual information incorporated in the contemporary experience.

Carine Thevenau - Seasonal Abandonment Of Imaginary Worlds

Isbn 9780646982526
Publisher Editions Edizioni
Idea code 18158
€ 37.50

This book comprises a photographic collection by Carine Thévenau of recently deserted playgrounds in rural Japan. Pictured during the winter, the snow-covered playgrounds might arouse a nostalgic sensation, yet a more critical analysis reveals a portrait of a place and offers us a glimpse of space and time paused. Thévenau interprets the emptiness within the playgrounds as a silence or tension that our minds feel compelled to fill, akin to the pause in a musical score or the interval of a theatrical play. These playgrounds are the residue of an ageing Japanese population, revealing economic shifts but also cultural philosophies about nature, respect, waste, and sustainability.

Rohan Hutchinson - An Error Has Occurred

Isbn 9780648262817
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 18210
€ 33.75

Rohan Hutchinson’s new book is based around a core series of large-format photographs that he made during an expedition to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in 2017. The expedition’s focus was to record and document the beauty, enormity, and diversity of the Arctic landscape. He later reinterpreted and expanded the scope of the photographs in a bid to respond to the impact of climate change on the Arctic region and address our responsibilities as global citizens. The final result has two components: the large-format images and a series of physical and chemical reworkings of the photographic prints. Paired with the originals, they reveal a ravaged, blackened Arctic landscape.

Emily Berl - Marilyn

Isbn 9783906822198
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 18191
€ 44.70

Emily Berl first moved to Los Angeles in 2012 and soon noticed the face of Marilyn Monroe everywhere, an image so ubiquitous that it blended into everyday life. Around the world, there are women who dress as her, whether as impersonators, tribute artists, or simply fans. For them, she is more than a storied icon, and her timeless celebrity inspires her admirers to channel, protect, and pursue a traditional image of fame. Berl portrays fourteen women who dress as Marilyn Monroe, examining the classic yet powerful notion of the Hollywood Dream that still thrives today. A fascinating afterword by Karina Longworth delves into the biography and phenomenon of Marilyn Monroe.

Rene Groebli - Color Work

Isbn 9783906822068
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 18190
€ 62.90

Following his poetic, black-and-white photography, colour became for René Groebli the primary challenge that had to be faced and overcome technically and aesthetically, but also mentally, starting in the mid 1950s. What Groebli was striving for was a “sizeable repertoire of technical possibilities”, in order to use it to invent images: magical images, symbolic images. What interested him were metaphorical images that let one see “behind the facade”, to present, in principle, “the not visible”.

Ives Maes - Sunville

Isbn 9789491819841
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 18233
€ 39.90

Ives Maes grew up in “Sunville”, a free translation of the Flemish village of Zonhoven. After his brother’s suicide, Maes returned to his homestead and wandered the countryside with a camera and stacks of accidentally expired film. The colour shifts in the photographs he took during these walks suggest an indefinable time. He combined them with snapshots from the family album and images found in the village’s historical archive, and continued to photograph his childhood home during six successive seasons, until a partial solar eclipse put a symbolical end to these recordings. Sunville is a personal quest into Maes’s memories, and explores the peripheries of the medium.

Kintsugi

Isbn 9783941249226
Publisher Peperoni
Idea code 18187
€ 36.20

Edith Maria Balk pays homage to silence. Life, with all its hustle and bustle, stress and setbacks, can be an imposition. One must contemplate memories and question routines now and then, in order to distinguish the essential from the non-essential and to open oneself up to the elemental and wondrous state of being. ‘Kintsugi’ is a traditional Japanese method for repairing damaged ceramics. The break is not a blemish to be rendered invisible, and instead transforms the vessel into a uniquely beautiful piece. With her quiet images of water and clouds, flowers and trees, sun and light, people and magical instants, Balk engenders precious moments of pause and contemplation.

Clare Rae - Never Standing On Two Feet

Isbn 9780648262824
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 18240
€ 36.00

Known for her engagement with domestic and institutional spaces, Clare Rae explores ideas of performance and gesture to interrogate and subvert dominant modes of representation. Her photographic work is informed by feminist theory and presents an alternate and often awkward experience of subjectivity and the female body, usually her own. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of her work, ‘Never standing on two feet’ serves both as an ode to the legendary avant-garde queer artist and writer Claude Cahun and an expansion of Rae’s own performative practice, repositioning her particular mode of self-portraiture to the windswept Jersey landscape.
