Batia Suter - Radial Grammar

Isbn 9789492811233
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 18273
€ 38.00

The imagery in Batia Suter’s ‘Radial Grammar’ revolves around radial shapes and concepts. The book uses of two separate layers of black ink, allowing Suter to create double images and merge patterns and screens. Departing from pages scanned from her collection of second-hand books on natural science, precision machinery, and art history, she freely manipulates and reorders them within the space of this volume, which can be seen as a condensed exhibition on paper. It is a journey along visual phenomena that reconnects us with the endless curiosity and patience of our younger selves leafing through an encyclopaedia, sensitive to its visual correspondences.

The artist as collector and champion of the American vernacular. Allen Ruppersberg: Intellectual Property 1968–2018 accompanies a major retrospective exhibition on one of conceptual art’s most inventive and acclaimed practitioners. Emerging in late-1960s Los Angeles, Ruppersberg was among that city’s first generation of conceptual artists to espouse a working method that privileges ideas and process over conventional aesthetic objects. Deploying posters, books, postcards and even a café and hotel, his projects have consistently had at their center a focus on the American vernacular - its music, popular imagery and ephemera - mining the nuances of culture through its unsung conventions.

Vija Celmins

Isbn 9781944929138
Publisher Matthew Marks Gallery
Idea code 18258
€ 63.85

The Latvian-born, New York–based artist has been rendering nature imagery from black-and-white photographic sources since the 1960s, exploring the same subjects repeatedly in paintings, drawings and prints. Here, she focuses on two motifs she has employed for several decades: the ocean’s surface and the night sky. The imagery, however, is not her foremost concern: “The recognizable image is just one element to consider. The paintings seem more a record of my grappling with how to transform that image into a painting and make it alive.” This process can be seen in A Painting in Six Parts (1986–87/2012–16), a group of six oil paintings based on a photograph she took 50 years ago from a pier in Venice, California.

By addressing some of Redon’s favourite themes, this publication shows how he transposed literary and musical motifs into his own work and how he reinvented such themes over and over again creating new associations and meaning.

De Kunst Van Het Kijken - Van Giotto Tot Warhol

Isbn 9789491819889
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 18235
€ 29.90

In this accessible and practical guide, Patrick De Rynck and Jon Thompson explore more than 200 works, helping readers to unlock each painting’s meaning. Clues to the meaning of the masterpieces of art history lie in a rich system of symbols, themes, and motifs that often elude the modern eye. Without the intimate knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology, folklore and Christian theology so vivid in the minds of the artists and familiar to their public, we often miss the visual hints that gave contemporary meaning to a painting. Likewise, the complex themes and characteristics of modern art can intimidate and baffle the casual observer. Brief yet illuminating explanations accompany over 500 colour illustrations, providing the means to interpret and enjoy these and many other works.

The Transhistorical Museum - Mapping the Field

Isbn 9789492095527
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 18260
€ 25.00

In the 21st century we have witnessed a significant expansion in the field of transhistorical exhibition practice. A range of curatorial efforts have emerged in which objects and artefacts from various periods and art historical and cultural contexts are combined in display, in an effort to question and expand traditional museological notions such as chronology, context, and category. Such experiments in transcending art historical boundaries can result in fresh insights into the workings of entrenched historical presumptions, providing a space to reassess interpretations of individual objects. With contributions by Mieke Bal, Hendrik Folkerts, Nicola Setari, Maria Iñigo Clavo, and others.

Polar bears swimming in the water and rearing up, people hiding behind thickets and walls, fish and flowers rotating wildly, and all of this swirls into plant-like forms and architectural elements recalling eddy, cave and urban landscapes.Sabine Hertig’s large-format collages combine thousands and thousands of fragments to make one profound overall construction. The Swiss artist has created an independent and unmistakable oeuvre that constitutes a forceful and innovative handling of the medium of the collage. Equipped with scissors and glue, Hertig repeatedly questions her own unconventional capricious idiosyncratic formal idiom, while at the same time constantly developing it further.

O, Wonder! Magazine On Green Culture #2 Sounds Like Silence

Isbn 9772543288009
Publisher O,wonder!
Idea code 18301
€ 10.00

As the Swiss philosopher Max Picard argued in 1948, “Nothing has changed the nature of man so much as the loss of silence”. This loss of silence reflects the disastrous secularisation and progressively materialistic direction of life. Our living environment is filled with a rising din and a profusion of visual noise, creating a sea of distracting stimuli that is draining the world of its mystery and poetry, as well as its sensuous appeal. This issue explores the spectrum between silence and noise, in the interest of human well-being. With contributions by Marloe Mens, Ian McCallum, and more, plus interviews with author, traveller, and photographer Arita Baaijens and artist Melanie Bonajo.

Born in Kobe, artist Masanao Hirayama creates works that are disarmingly simple, with childlike lines and abstractly sketched forms. “Mountain Quiz” comprises a series of untitled drawings of notable mountains. The only clue he gives as to their identity is the elevation. From famous peaks like Everest, Kilimanjaro, Fuji, and the Matterhorn, to volcanoes such as Mauna Kea, Mount St. Helens, Vesuvius, and Krakatau, and a long list of lesser-known mountains, Hirayama diligently draws the most recognisable features of each landmark. He even includes a wild card, which turns out to be the tallest planetary mountain in the solar system. A paperboard insert lists the answers.

Sae Honda - Everybody Needs A Rock

Isbn 9784907562137
Publisher Torch Press
Idea code 18239
€ 30.25

Sae Honda is an Amsterdam-based jeweller who collects plastic rubbish on the street and melts it down into a unique, artificial rock. She observes the qualities of each rock and then cuts and polishes them to create plastic gemstones. The inspiration for the project was sparked by a new kind of rock discovered in Hawaii, which contains plastic fragments. It is said that the rock cannot erode, but will remain in the ground until perhaps future generations discover it, like some kind of precious stone. Honda’s imagination took this a step further, leading her to create rocks that contain memories of today. This book presents her collection of self-made rocks and the stories behind each.

Marres, House for Contemporary Culture, explores new paths in the visual arts. The core of its programme is devoted to sensory experience and the way it links art and society. Florina Leinss - Einsatzteilager

Isbn 9783945900130
Publisher Edition Taube
Idea code 18218
€ 38.80

‘Ersatzteillager’ by Florina Leinss is an atlas of forms. The volume brings together a graphic vocabulary that is the basis and starting point for her paintings, graphics, and other works in an abstract contemplation of design and aesthetics. Leinss is inspired by the realm of mechanical spare parts and found objects taken from everyday devices and things. Liberated from their context, the strictly functional forms reveal nothing of their original purpose. Leinss further develops them from an aesthetic point of view in her work. In sixteen series, the graphics undergo an evolutionary development in shape. Each can be the successor, optimisation, or replacement of its predecessor.

Frank Havermans - Transitional

Isbn 9789074106474
Publisher Schunck*
Idea code 18200
€ 31.45

In a world driven by efficiency, speed, and standardisation, Dutch visual artist Frank Havermans envisions installations that slow down time. The futuristic, alienating constructions are literally redefining public space as we know it. These “interventions” invite us to experience space in an alternative way, challenging us to consider the identity of a particular location. Appearing rational, their geometric structures signal a latent mechanical intent. Havermans depicts an exhilarating style of shape and form in which objects have a distinct appeal, somewhere between archaic and futuristic. With texts by Lene ter Haar and Fabian de Kloe, Aaron Betsky, and Jens Maier-Rothe.
