The Image Revisited - Luc Tuymans In Conversation With Hans De Wolf, T.j. Clark And Gottfried Bohm

Isbn 9789491819797
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 18371
€ 29.90

At the age of 19, Luc Tuymans saw El Greco’s work for the first time – an event which prompted him to embark on his own artistic journey. The life-changing experience is recounted in this publication, which acts as both a monograph and an art history book. It includes three conversations the artist had with art historians Hans Maria De Wolf, Gottfried Böhm, and T.J. Clark over the course of three years. What emerges, besides a fascinating discussion on the work of artists such as El Greco, Goya, Titian, Cézanne, Courbet, Hopper, Newman, and Richter, is an insight into Tuymans’s own creative process, how the great art of the past inspired and motivated him.

Strange Plants III

Isbn 9780986396106
Publisher Zioxla
Idea code 18323
€ 37.10

This volume, the third in a series, celebrates plants in contemporary art. Among the work of its 50 artists are large-scale paintings of overgrown cactus gardens, orchids with faces, filmic and otherworldly photographs of water lilies, glitchy textiles of roses sourced from social media, a hyperrealistic tribute to the corpse flower, and much more. Themes include pollination, petals, and regrowth, and the book gives special focus to several artists, including Othelo Gervacio, Megan Marrin, Margo Wolowiec, Synchrodogs, and David Axelbank. At once surreal and erotic, abstract and real, it continues a dialogue about how we perceive nature and art as a tool for interpreting and questioning our surroundings.

Rose Wylie - Hullo, Hullo

Isbn 9788494813221
Publisher CAC Málaga
Idea code 18353
€ 51.70

In creating her large-format paintings, British artist Rose Wylie takes her inspiration from a variety of sources: history, the everyday, comics, mass media, anecdotes, cinema, and sports. Although she has been painting for decades, her work only began to attract widespread recognition in 2010. She paints in a manner that seems deliberately awkward and remarkably spontaneous, which leads many to think that she is younger. This catalogue, published on the occasion of her first exhibition in Spain, presents a selection of nearly 30 works, some of which are shown publicly for the first time. A correspondence between Alison Gingeras and Wylie complements her art.

Marijn Van Kreij - Nude In The Studio

Isbn 9789082813425
Publisher Marres
Idea code 18376
€ 10.00

In the summer of 1955, Picasso moved his studio to early 20th century villa ‘La Californie’ near Cannes. The large Jugendstil windows and the view on a garden with cactuses, eucalyptus, and palm trees found their way into Picasso’s paintings. Picasso called them "interior landscapes". In the past years, Marijn van Kreij has worked on a series of drawings and paintings modeled after Picasso’s interior landscapes, focusing on the act of drawing and painting through repetition and variation. This ring bound postcard book published on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Nude in the Studio’ at Marres in Maastricht offers a lively cross section of these series in vivid colours.

Carin Ellberg: Mother Of Pearl

Isbn 9789188031600
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 18380
€ 47.30

It has been said that Stockholm-based visual artist Carin Ellberg transgresses many of the boundaries that pertain to our traditional attitude to art. Intimate corporeality, everyday life, perishable and trivial things all find a place in her oeuvre. This substantial artist’s monograph attests to her versatileness when it comes to materials and the manner of expression in her intrinsically feminist production. Sensual forms are used to interpret the social lifeworld and the intimate sphere alike, equating them to internal movements in the artist’s own self. Numerous works spanning Ellberg’s career are presented in this volume, woven together by a conversation between Maria Lind and the artist.

Hamed Abdalla - Arabecedaire

Isbn 9791093781143
Publisher Zaman Books
Idea code 18377
€ 41.95

Hamed Abdalla was a key figure in Egyptian modernism and world art. His experimental inventions reflected over thirty years of political and philosophical debate in the Arab world and also gave shape to an exiled modernism: to the cities where he lived and worked (Cairo, Copenhagen, Paris) and the art movements he came into contact with (CoBrA, lettrism, etc.). Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at The Mosaic Rooms, London, this publication examines the place of Abdalla in transnational modern art history. Mobilizing the personal archives and library of the artist, Arabecedaire reflects on Abdalla's journeys and influences, bringing to light a vast and rich body of material which guided his painting practice.

Nicolas Floc'h - Le Grand Troc

Isbn 9782374400525
Publisher Frac Bretagne
Idea code 18378
€ 41.95

'Le Grand Troc' is a work by Nicolas Floc'h founded on a procedure that the artist developed and implemented for the first time in Santiago de Chile in 2008, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 2009, and most recently in Vitry-sur-Seine in 2015. Its genesis in the context of a slum in Santiago, Lo Espejo, in response to a New Patrons project, was a determining factor. It gave the project its strengths without forcing it into a rigid code of regulations. For the artist, each implementation of 'Le Grand Troc' is a new field of research. Porto Alegre and Vitry-sur-Seine enabled him to explore other forms of implementation that resonated with the uniqueness of each social and cultural environment as well as with the interaction with the institutions involved.

Kwab; Ornament As Art In The Age Of Rembrandt

Isbn 9789462084285
Publisher Rijksmuseum/ Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 18361
€ 40.00

The auricular style is one of the most important and remarkable Dutch contributions to the decorative arts in Europe. This book traces the history and meaning of the auricular style, with its fabulous, organic shapes, from the work of the goldsmith Paulus van Vianen at the court of Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor, in Prague to that of his brother Adam in Utrecht and Johannes Lutma in Amsterdam. Their masterpieces were admired as high art by Rembrandt and his pupils, who produced auricular designs themselves. The story of this abstract decorative form is illustrated using silver and gold masterworks, design drawings and prints, paintings by Rembrandt, furnishings, and Cuir de Cordoue gold leather wall coverings.

Art And Autonomy

Isbn 9789080179394
Publisher V2_
Idea code 18360
€ 9.70

What does it mean to speak of artistic autonomy at a time when art is fully commercialised and aesthetics has become the guiding principle of economic production and policymaking? This book by Sebastian Olma takes a fresh look at this question by summoning three heroes of the aesthetic revolution to confront the challenges faced by artistic practice today. Turning Kant into a campaigner for the Anthropocene, Schiller into a creative entrepreneur, and Schelling into a political activist, Olma lays the groundwork for a critique that identifies “the contemporary” itself as contemporary art’s greatest challenge in the struggle to reinvent its autonomy and regain its relevance to society.

Cross-Dressers In Ukiyo-E

Isbn 9784861526534
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 18345
€ 24.90

Cross-dressing has existed for a long time and across many cultures in both the East and the West. In Japan, traditions of male performers in female costume and vice versa have been around since the Middle Ages. Kabuki theatre includes male actors who specialise in playing female roles, perfectly dressed as women. There are plenty of examples in fictional stories as well. When it comes to ukiyo-e, pictures in the ‘yatsushi-e’ and ‘mitate-e’ styles depict historical persons and characters with genders switched. This book presents a broad overview of the Edo period’s culture and customs of crossing the gender boundary through a wide variety of ukiyo-e artworks.

Stijn Cole Entre Terre Et Mer

Isbn 9789090309491
Publisher Stijn Cole
Idea code 18338
€ 30.00

Stijn Cole uses contemporary techniques to investigate recurrent classical themes. Ostensibly a landscape artist, he expresses himself exclusively in images of and derived from landscapes. This self-imposed limitation does not impact the coherence of his body of work, nor the versatility of his output across different media: video, sculpture, installation, painting, graphic work, and mixed media. The perception of the environment is made abstract in his work, whereby it gains a universal and conceptual value. This publication documents several of Cole’s artistic projects, such as ‘Colorscapes’, ‘Blue Prints’, and ’12 stops to Santiago’, and includes an interview with the artist.

The Society Machine

‘The Society Machine’ problematises the picture of modern Sweden as an unmitigated success story. This exhibition catalogue features artworks that explore the consequences of industrialisation, the cultural revolution that provided the foundation for this Scandinavian welfare state. It asks what kind of society is created by standardisation and all-encompassing efficiency. How are man and nature altered by being viewed primarily as components of an economic system? Bringing together new essays with documentation of the exhibition at Malmö Konstmuseum curated by Lisa Rosendahl, the book features work by a diverse spectrum of Swedish and international artists.

Ken Kagami Bart Works 2

Isbn
Publisher Yellow Pages/nieves/innen
Idea code 18305
€ 6.00

Ken Kagami’s work ranges from performances to installations, paintings, drawings, and publications, and is characterised by its simple expression of conflicting ideas. His take on pop culture presents a distortion of relatable materials and objects, and confronts social taboos with a healthy dose of humour. Through a sharp sense of colour, form, and pure ideas, Kagami merges worlds that would naturally never intermingle to create imaginative and bizarre transformations that are also intended to spark a reaction. With ‘Bartworks 2’ he adds even more comically distorted portraits of the famous boy character from ‘The Simpsons’ to an already existing repertoire.

'Slammm, Ramble, Perform' is Ria Pacquée’s first monograph shedding light on her extensive, tireless, and relevant oeuvre. Ria Pacquée herself dug deep into the archives, so the book includes many never-seen-before photographs and documents, alongside her own short, poetic statements. The main chapters focus on the performances (1974-2017), the stories of Madame and It (1982-1995) and the ‘ongoing archives’ series. Besides seminal texts by the late Jean Fisher and anthropologist Michael Taussig, art historian Antony Hudek wrote an introductory text starting with her early days in Antwerp in the 1970s. The book concludes with the artist in her own words.

Jose Luis Puche - Como Nieve Que Baila

Isbn 9788494813214
Publisher Cac Malaga
Idea code 18324
€ 38.75

José Luis Puche creates unsettling images that look like film stills of things long gone or imagined. His work has a certain pop sensibility, is full of strange familiarity and subtle, surreal nuances, and carries key information which he extracts from books, mass media, or the Internet. The banality of his subjects is enveloped in an air suffused with the subtle aroma of mystery, which in some cases verges on an uncanny, eerie, or strange feeling that makes the viewer feel worried or uneasy. Published with an exhibition of Puche’s work at CAC Málaga, this catalogue reveals the draughtsman’s exploration of reality as ultimately elevating the value of the apparent to the status of the real.

Lovers of cats and art are often one and the same, making this anthology from Seigensha all the more appealing. Gathering examples from the history of both Western and Japanese art – from paintings, etchings, and sculptures, to plenty of ukiyo-e prints – it celebrates our multifaceted relationship with these animals as expressed through feline appearances in artworks. Such depictions are categorised in five chapters: Holy Cats and Evil Cats (deified, harbingers, or good luck talismans), Cats in Lives (our mutually adoring relationships), Cats in Various Situations (snoozing, stealing, playing), and Various Metamorphosis of Cats (wildly anthropomorphic imaginations).

Douglas Coupland Machines Will Make Better Choices Than Humans

Isbn 9789080179363
Publisher V2_
Idea code 18405
€ 5.00

The future is no longer the distant, mythical condition it once was to us. Technology has placed it at our fingertips, it wasn't so long ago that we marveled at devices that could tell us where we were at that exact moment; it became odd when they recently began to tell us where we would soon be. The most important issue, however, might not be whether a future coproduced and made available to us by technology is good or bad, but rather how we want to relate to it as human beings. The three essays by Douglas Coupland collected in this volume address this question.
