Isbn 9788494509674
Publisher Ivorypress
Idea code 18675
€ 36.15

'Dreamers', conceived as a tri-fold photography book and printed in black and silver duotone, is based on Shirin Neshat’s trilogy of black and white video installations, which comprises 'Illusions & Mirrors' (2013), featuring Natalie Portman, 'Roja' (2016) and 'Sarah' (2016). Three stories exploring women’s dreams through emotional and psychological narratives, remaining on the border of dream and reality; madness and sanity; consciousness and sub-consciousness. In the artist’s own words "I have been haunted by the power of dreams, and in how it is only in the state of dreams where the boundaries between reality and fiction are blurred; and where human beings become truly free and naked."

Artists do myriad things. Six of these things are discussed in this modest book. Highlights from the lives and work of seven seminal New York-based artists [Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Donald Judd, On Kawara, and Richard Serra] are used to illustrate these six things.

Jeff Weber - An Attempt at a Personal Epistemology | Kunsthalle Leipzig

Isbn 9789492811387
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 18706
€ 25.00

This book is the result of Jeff Weber’s long-term project as Kunsthalle Leipzig, an institution which worked as an extension of his photographic practice and functioned as a conceptual frame to invite others to actively participate. His sequence of images documenting the renovation of the Leipzig apartments reflects the wish for a place created with a minimum of means and invested with freedom. Light seems to become a physical object in Weber’s pictures, “yet the quality of grey tones… is mysterious,” writes Robert Beavers. Besides many photos and posters from the Kunsthalle, the book includes a critical text by Michael Baers and a conversation with the artist and Marie-France Rafael.

Louis Lüthi - A Die with Twenty-Six Faces

Isbn 9789492811394
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 18720
€ 17.50

In ‘A Die With Twenty-Six Faces’, the author guides us through his collection of books with letters for titles, referred to as “alphabet books”. Some of these titles are familiar, such as John Updike’s ‘S.’, Georges Perec’s ‘W’, and Louis Zukofsky’s ‘A’. Others are obscure, perhaps even imaginary, like Arnold Skemer’s ‘C’ and ‘D’, or Zach Sodenstern’s ‘A’. Tracing connections between these books, the author elaborates on the symbolic content of letters, Joycean characters, Franz Kafka, Guy Davenport, and libraries within libraries. Designed by the author and mixing essay and fiction, the book is a playful meditation on contemporary literature, typography, and book collecting.

Manon Van Kouswijk - Making Faces A Jewellery Playbook

Isbn 9780646994185
Publisher Manon Van Kouswijk
Idea code 18707
€ 35.70

Dutch artist and contemporary jeweller Manon van Kouswijk’s working methodology is based on exploring and translating archetypal jewellery forms and motifs through a range of materials and processes. An integral aspect of her practice is the framing and contextualising of her work through the making of exhibitions and artist’s publications. While rooted in a conceptual approach to making, her works embrace the sensual qualities of objects in their use of colour, weight, sound, rhythm, and material expression. This book, with its expressive, beaded characters of necklaces arranged as masks, suggests that if jewellery has a face, we might form an emotional connection with it.

Beatriz Milhazes - Rio Azul

Isbn 9781910844304
Publisher White Cube
Idea code 18680
€ 46.10

This exhibition foregrounded Milhazes' explorations in a variety of media including painting, installation, sculpture, and collage and her first ever tapestry. In a new series of paintings, which make reference to the flattened sense of space in Matisse's paper cut-outs and the colourful compositions of modernist painter and designer Sonia Delaunay, Milhazes continues to employ a bright, riotous colour palette with 'Neo-Concretist' and geometric shapes. Circular forms, abstract and floral patterning and solid expanses of single colours are set against parallel or undulating lines; images that echo both the tropical profusion of Brazil's native flora and the delicate transparency and grid-like features of its modernist architecture.

Lee Lozano - Language Pieces

Isbn 9783906915265
Publisher Fruitmarket
Idea code 18681
€ 33.20

In the late 1960s, Lee Lozano conceived of and executed a series of 'language pieces,' written in the pages of her notebooks, consisting of rules and parameters for the actions that would constitute a piece. From offering money to house-guests to smoking as much marijuana as possible, Lozano boldly tested social norms, culminating in two of her most famous works: 'General Strike Piece' (1969), which saw her retreating from the art world completely, and 'Decide to Boycott Women' (1971), in which she ceased engaging with all members of her own gender.

Conceptual Art in a Curatorial Perspective: Between Dematerialization and Documentation

Isbn 9789078088769
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 19039
€ 25.00

'Conceptual Art in a Curatorial Perspective' focuses on the curatorial practice of exhibiting conceptual art. The fact that conceptual works are not object-based, creates challenges in exhibiting them. This book offers various perspectives on how to handle conceptual art in the context of the museum, based on three detailed case studies and an extensive introduction in which the paradox of conceptual art is analyzed. It also elaborates on the history of exhibiting conceptual artworks, and on the influence of curators in their canonization. It is relevant for students of art and culture, art and museum professionals, and everyone interested in the art of the 1960s and 1970s.

This universe invites us to inhabit it as well, affecting our way of seeing with its irregular sequence and excavation into memory, transforming and branching out into a possible future. The book explores the assembling of natural and synthetic matter, relocates self-portraits, discusses ghosts and becoming disoriented, and uses memory as material, unfolding parts of Atashi’s universe and revealing its processes.
