Yoshinori Mizutani - Hdr_nature

Isbn 9784865872965
Publisher Amana
Idea code 18488
€ 53.30

With this photobook, Yoshinori Mizutani aims to create and explore images from the world beyond our senses with a camera. He uses the camera’s HDR setting, meaning three images are captured with different exposure settings, which are then automatically combined. Because of the way the photographs are taken, the final result depends entirely on the mechanics of the device. By moving the camera while shooting, unintended outcomes emerge: vivid colour washes, hard-edged shapes, and hazy abstractions. Mizutani uses this technique to his advantage, as a way to discover new images while at the same time challenging and expanding the possibilities of photography.

Archivio 03 - The Americana Issue

Isbn 25331043
Publisher Archivio Magazine
Idea code 19041
€ 15.05

When American surfers were sent to fight in Vietnam they took their boards with them, or at least tried to. Born on the beaches of California and Hawaii, surfing was a peaceful youth culture at odds with the politics of jungle conflict. As the first story in ‘The Americana Issue’ tells, the soldiers relied on the healing power of riding a wave. The magazine presents this and other stories gleaned from archives, covering topics like the Manhattan Project, powerful black female imagery, Jean Baudrillard on 9/11, visions of roadside America by John Margolies, Tony Oursler and the paranormal, Anthony Faramelli on symbolism and liberalism, alternative press from Provo to punk, and more.

Jenne Grabowski - Broken Flowers

Isbn
Publisher Jb. Institute
Idea code 18538
€ 33.00

Jenne Grabowski often roams outdoors with his son, Henri. Together they leave the city to discover the open spaces surrounding it, seeking out solitary places in nature and collecting various samples to bring home: branches, leaves, moss, stones, and flowers. The bouquets of flowers eventually wither and fade, but for Grabowski and his son they are an embodiment of the transience that exists in every moment. Each bouquet represents at least one journey, one or a few stories. Collected in this book are images of drying flowers past their prime, with bright but also faded colours, photographed with flash in an unforgiving yet loving tribute to the beauty of nature’s decay.

Stien Bekaert Nothing On The Left

Isbn 9789490800932
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 18645
€ 25.00

Stien Bekaert’s Nothing on the left is a carefully composed formal play with fragmentary photographs – from found footage to self-made images. Most of these photos would normally be doomed to disappear between the folds of time, if Stien Bekaert did not take care of them, and granted them a new life.Captivated by handicraft, Bekaert experiments with various printing techniques. She makes etchings, lithographs and monotypes, as well as riso, offset and transfer prints. Through manipulations – such as crops, transformations and blowups – Bekaert deconstructs the images and creates distance.

The series is accompanied by a commissioned text by Thogdin Ripley.

This book presents 25 Japanese sweets together with short, enlightening texts that describe each meticulously crafted confectionary, detailing aspects such as colour, ingredients, season, origin, and the memories and particular enjoyment they evoke.

Publisher Quodlibet
Idea code 18722
€ 51.60

‘Terre in movimento’ is a commissioned artistic project wherein three artists were invited to offer their perspectives on the Marche region in Italy. In late 2016 a series of strong seismic shocks rocked the small towns on the slopes of Mount Vettore, places which have been inhabited since prehistoric times. The earthquakes precipitated the loss of structures and formation of ruins, yet also the creation of temporary structures of all kinds, such as shelters and storage areas for displaced people and objects. Reportages by the artists Olivio Barbieri, Paola De Pietri, and Petra Noordkamp initiate a broader, multifaceted artistic research into the metamorphosis of this landscape.

A photographic essay shot in Mexico City between 2009 and 2017 by José Luis Cuevas, ‘On the Resistance of the Bodies’ emerges from his personal experiences and observations about the political, economic, and social systems that govern and erode us, and by extension, our bodies. The series of photographs is interspersed with heavy machinery, portraits of individuals deformed by injury, abuse, and obesity, images from the morgue, car wrecks, medical apparatus, and other objects. Violence is the common thread linking these confronting images, which together propose a symbolic approach that highlights the vulnerability and ephemeral nature of the human body.

Suffo Moncloa 17 8 176 8 6 (Evidences)

Isbn 9788409044986
Publisher Suffo Moncloa
Idea code 18610
€ 61.50

‘Evidences’ is a curated collection of photos taken over a period of five years. With these 79 photographs, Suffo Moncloa constructs a meditative journey, a multifaceted dialogue between images based on decontextualized language, with evocations from form, colour, implied mystery, and the inherent power of the image itself. The collection’s narratives deal directly with the elements that make up our world, but also with the idea of creating a timeless image. It includes evidences from the working process, dark room experimentation, and reconstruction. The idea of materiality becomes central; capturing moments when a vision can be transformed into an object, or something else.
