Henry Van De Velde - The Artist As A Designer, From Art Nouveau To Modernism
Isbn 9780995473058 Publisher Occasional Papers Idea code 19044 € 24.95
Henry van de Velde (1863–1957) is a towering figure in the history of modern design. Of prodigious range – he was equally at ease designing furniture and objects as entire buildings – he paved the way for the transition from Art Nouveau to Modernism, and proposed a model for design education that inspired the Bauhaus. This biography by graphic designer and historian Richard Hollis traces Van de Velde’s career from his beginnings as a painter in Antwerp to his trend-setter stature in European architecture and design at the turn of the twentieth century. Van de Velde emerges from Hollis’ biography as a strikingly contemporary figure, believing in the social power of art in an era of growing nationalism.

Other items include a carpet with coloured abstract shapes by Bruno Munari, Alberto Burri’s “Grande Cretto” memorial to the destroyed Sicilian town of Gibellina, an interview with product designer Lorenzo Damiani by Marco Romanelli, a meditation on cracks and how to repair them, and elephants.

Hermann Eidenbenz. Teaching Graphic Design. Documents 1926-1955
Isbn 9783038630364 Publisher Triest Verlag Idea code 19140 € 25.00
Hermann Eidenbenz (1902–1993) was one of the first persons in Switzerland to describe himself as a graphic designer. From the first half of the 20th century into the 1950s, he was involved in graphic design education in Zurich, Magdeburg, Basel, and Brunswick, first as a student and later as a teacher. The didactic material from Eidenbenz's time as a teacher of graphic design published here throws light on this discipline at a time before graphic design in Switzerland had achieved international recognition.

Scheltens & Abbenes - Zeen
Isbn 9784908526237 Publisher Case Publishing Idea code 19126 € 30.00
Artist duo Maurice Scheltens and Liesbeth Abbenes are considered among the most progressive still-life photographers in the Netherlands today. With the creative craftsmanship of artists, they produce images that draw viewers into a sense of wonder at the things we encounter in everyday life. At once fascinating and demanding, their meticulous examination brings overlooked details into sharp focus, in turn both flattening the pictured objects and bringing them to life. This publication coincides with a retrospective exhibition in Amsterdam covering eighteen years of colourful, minimal, and challenging work by Scheltens & Abbenes. With a text by Louise Schouwenberg.

No No No No Yes -Book Design Uncovered
Isbn 9781527231931 Publisher D&b Books Idea code 19182 € 29.50
All designers will tell you that the design process is one of perseverance, failure, hard work, and eventual triumph. Book cover design is no different. The idea for this book stemmed from attending a talk at St. Bride's Foundation, watching Jon Gray and Jamie Keenan present a carousel of beautiful covers that have never seen the cover of a book as they were rejected along the way. The proverbial lightbulb went up - why not publish a book about rejected covers? The result brings together 25 published book covers and 100 alternatives seen in print for the very first time. Drawing on submissions from book cover designers from across the world, the book is part peek behind the curtain of the book cover design process, part alternative history of book covers.

Rosmarie Tissi: Graphic Design
Isbn 9783038630340 Publisher Triest Verlag Idea code 19089 € 39.20
The designs of acclaimed Swiss graphic designer Rosmarie Tissi are characterised by an objectively clear yet undogmatic style. A defining aspect of Tissi’s work is her playful approach, combined with a predilection for bold colour contrasts, typeface, and geometrical shapes. Her individual style has lost none of its originality and freshness in almost 60 years of design work, a feat which is celebrated in this first synopsis of her complete graphical oeuvre. Covering a host of magazines, logos, corporate images, headline fonts, advertisements, packaging, and more, it rediscovers Tissi’s achievements, unparalleled among female Swiss graphic designers of her generation.

Philippe Weisbecker - Japanese Folk Toys
Isbn 9784861527074 Publisher Seigensha Idea code 19166 € 18.40
The traditional folk toys of Japan are simple dolls and figurines made from clay, wood, and paper. Known as ‘kyodo gangu’, the delightful little animals and other fanciful creatures used to be given to children to play with, but today these objects have become more coveted by collectors than by young people. Philippe Weisbecker, an artist and illustrator, went in search of Japanese folk toys, learning the craftmanship behind them in traditional workshops. The book includes a page by page reproduction of the author’s notebook, in which he sketched and documented objects he discovered and places he visited, and recorded descriptions and personal reflections during his travels in Japan.

Design And The Wondrous: On The Nature Of Ornament
Isbn 9782373820157 Publisher Hyx Editions Idea code 19207 € 32.25
This volume presents a new narrative of design, situated somewhere between plant life and ornament, nature and artifice. Through essays by several authors it explores the ornament’s role with respect to morphogenesis, by which the object is continually transformed through an evolving dynamic of forms. With the arrival of the digital age, the ornament’s role in design has been greatly modified. No longer a simple motif, it is used as an animated form. At the intersection of information sciences and biology, designers utilise 3D printing to create carefully calculated objects based on organic growth. With contributions by Spyros Papapetros, Marie-Ange Brayer, and others.

Raddar 1: Function Design Annual Review
Isbn 9791095513032 Publisher T&P Publishing, Mudac Idea code 19174 € 1.00
Switzerland’s first dedicated research design journal, ‘Raddar’ aims to strike a balance between solid scholarly content and attractive graphic design. For its inaugural issue, it explores the theme “function” with a range of approaches in various analyses, case studies, and contributions from Roberto Casati, Anna-Maria Meister, and more. The journal’s cover is also a creative work in its own right, designed this time by Formafantasma, the Amsterdam-based studio headed by Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin. Carefully folded and perforated, it is divided into partitions that point to the possibility of cutting the paper into different segments and thereby providing a variety of possibilities.
