Hideyuki Nakayama, And Then: 5 Films Of 5 Architectures

Isbn 9784887063815
Publisher Toto
Idea code 19315
€ 38.35

Architect Hideyuki Nakayama started out working for Toyo Ito & Associates before establishing his own firm in 2007. This collection of Nakayama’s work is presented in the form of brochures for five films, each featuring one of his architectural works. With its novel design by Idea Oshima and in as much detail as possible, the volume records the production processes for the films, which focused on the status of the five works after Nakayama had completed them and moved on. Additionally, it offers a closer look at his design concepts for architecture, and in particular the elements he tries to incorporate in them. Both recent and as yet unreleased projects are among the featured works.

Idea code 19242
€ 57.95

Kumiko Inui has worked as an independent architect for almost 20 years. Early on, she conceived striking commercial designs for Louis Vuitton and Dior, among others. She has also since worked on projects that confront challenging real-life situations and represent a diverse array of typologies and scales, including small private houses, renovations of traditional townhouses in Kyoto, buildings for public services, a school reconstruction, and the redevelopment of a local station area in Kyushu. The book, designed by Atsuki Kikuchi, features an unparalleled number of Inui’s works, and many of the photographs directly portray how her buildings are experienced by people.

Publisher Avisa
Idea code 19274
€ 34.10

Austrian architects Baumschlager Eberle are the focus of this instalment. The practice, founded in 1985 by Carlo Baumschlager and Dietmar Eberle, has evolved into a global firm comprising eleven offices in countries throughout Europe and Asia. Today it is run by Eberle together with several partners. Academic research and practical experience come together in the architecture of Baumschlager Eberle, which primarily concerns itself with the relationship between density and the atmosphere of cities, as well as the possibility of designing zero-energy buildings. The issue includes a theoretical essay by Eberle, along with extensive profiles of sixteen projects completed since 2000.

The Breeze Block Book

Isbn 9780994396693
Publisher Uro Publications
Idea code 19305
€ 48.75

The recent resurgence of interest in the breeze block seems to be more than a nostalgic yearning for modernism. Designers today are rediscovering the forgotten qualities that made it such an appealing material for mid-century architects, which also means finding new ways to enhance and exploit them. By deploying the techniques of 21st-century design, from digital tools to robotic fabrication, complex new forms and patterns are now possible. Not just visually appealing, these also temper internal and external environments in increasingly sensitive and climate-responsive ways. With editorial direction from architect Sam Marshall, the volume is both a survey and a celebration.

Volume 55: Intangible Cultural Heritage

Isbn 9789077966655
Publisher Archis
Idea code 19292
€ 19.50

When we think of heritage, it is to protect and preserve our presence in the past. Heritage informs discourse about our identity and reminds us of not just who we were, but who we are. But consider the necessity of change and dynamism. What we want to preserve and why we want to preserve it is not set in stone. Institutionalising preservation of the intangible could be a threat to its own survival. The contributions and interviews in this issue delve into the politics and practices of safeguarding the intangible, looking at the kickback effects on tangible cultural heritage and exploring the hegemonic role that modernity still plays in shaping heritage institutions, ideas, and beliefs.

Gram 01: Fala Atelier, Norell/rodhe, Razzle Dazzle, Kosmos, Bast, Maio

Isbn 26497085
Publisher Edition Qndmc
Idea code 19291
€ 20.00

‘GRAM’ is a multiple research tool that combines graphic investigations with architectural explorations, where the publication is just a pretence and only the process matters. Each step is considered a potential research topic. The six architectural offices featured here – Fala Atelier, Norell/Rodhe, Razze Dazzle, Kosmos, Bast, and Maio – are all less than ten years old and consist of less than ten people. The profiles are based on a framework of dialogue that leads to theoretical or practical outcomes, in turn opening up the thought processes behind the production of space. ‘GRAM’ is a re-transcription of these conversations with additional annotations and translations.

Arquitectura Viva 214: Dossier Jean Nouvel

€ 18.20

Prodigal son of architecture during the 1980s, Jean Nouvel (Fumel, 1945) knew to make the leap to international fame to join the list of 'star architects.' It was a leap linked to the creation of Ateliers Jean Nouvel, a firm of 150 employees working from offices in Paris, Barcelona, Geneva, and Rome, thanks to which the French architect's language, always sophisticated, has found a place everywhere in the geographies of globalization, as demonstrated by the works featured in this issue: the National Museum of Qatar in Doha, the European Patent Office in The Hague, and the Alda Fendi Foundation in Rome.

Publisher Avisa
Idea code 19220
€ 18.20

The projects of Dan Stubbergaard, a Danish architect whose practice COBE now counts 130 employees, cover a wide range of scales and programs, but underlying all is the idea of architecture as a process of multidisciplinary dialogue and an engine of social transformation, attentive to context. All this is materialized through a contemporary language that reinterprets Scandinavian tradition, as shown by the works featured in this issue of Arquitectura Viva: the Red Cross Volunteer House extension, the transformation of an old silo, a kindergarten, and a residential development.

The two have collaborated intensely in past projects, like the Anyang Pavilion and the Mimesis Museum, both in South Korea, as well as a building for Shihlien Chemical in China and the design for three works presented in this issue: a set of sculptural pavilions in South Korea, an art and design museum in China, and a mausoleum in Taiwan.

This issue features Belgian architects Kersten Geers and David Van Severen, who formed OFFICE upon graduating in 2002 and are now based in Brussels. The duo is recognised for making compatible architectural practice, research, and teaching in a creative process that blurs the boundaries between practice and theory. From furniture design to urban planning, they exploit the potential of geometry, prioritising the simplicity of forms over gesture in their quest for spatial richness. This issue focuses on eight built works by OFFICE, but also includes features on the design competition for Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, the ongoing construction of the Munch Museum in Oslo, and more.

This book, conceived and designed by the architect, takes readers on a “journey” along the office’s most significant projects, through photomontages, drawings, models, and images. Among these are the Absolute Towers outside Toronto, Harbin Opera House and Chaoyang Park Plaza in China, Clover House kindergarten in Japan, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, and UNIC in Paris.

Terroir: Instruments

Isbn 9780994396679
Publisher Uro Publications
Idea code 19307
€ 45.00

‘Third Spaces’ is the second book of a series on the architectural practice TERROIR, established in 1998 by Richard Blythe, Gerard Reinmuth, and Scott Balmforth. The book begins with a conceptual framework around which a variety of projects, both recent and past, come into focus. Large projects often have a significant impact, intended or otherwise, on the public domain. This has led TERROIR to develop a strategy for third spaces that are usually not in the brief, and at times actually resist the functional logic of a project, yet are designed in the interests of greater urban openness, engagement, and generosity. The book features essays by John Hong and Andrew Benjamin.

Pontsteiger

Isbn 9789068687767
Publisher Thoth
Idea code 19230
€ 24.95

Published in collaboration with Architectuurcentrum Amsterdam and Arons and Gelauff architects, this monograph presents a bold new project in Amsterdam: Pontsteiger. The massive building consists of a six-storey low-rise block that wraps around a plaza on the waterfront. Two 60-metre towers at the open end of this block frame water views. The towers carry a bridge spanning 48 metres, rising to a height of 90 metres above the city. The result is an iconic building that foreshadows the growth of high-rise buildings around the river IJ. Today the building stands as a testament to its formidable, prize-winning design and the uncertainty that its realisation was able to overcome.

Naegele's Guide To Only Good Architecture In Iowa

Isbn 9781683150152
Publisher Culicidae Architectural Press
Idea code 19326
€ 24.15

Despite its deceptive title, the fact that this book is a guide about Iowa is accurate. Daniel Naegele qualifies “good” being not absolute but contingent and personal, and therefore a very questionable qualifier. By “architecture”, however, Naegele means “good building”, regardless of whether or not the built object was designed by an architect, is a habitable structure, or is even a building at all. Most entries in this guide are concerned either with vernacular works that are habitable tools (barns, corncribs, silos) or with built works that are not buildings at all (billboards, bridges, wind turbines, water towers). Mildly contentious by nature, Naegele’s guide is nevertheless utterly practical.
