O.OO: No Magic In Riso (reprint)

Isbn 9789869758802
Publisher O.OO Risograph & Design
Idea code 19361
€ 44.00

It took 850 days, 74 tubes of soy ink, 15 colors, 660 masters, 690,000 sheets of paper, 3 fans, 2 riso printers, and 4 people to complete a book – a 360 page book that only talks about 1 thing. The thing that is always the most fascinating is “Process”. The processes and experiences that did not have the chance to appear in the pages of this book can only be quantified, converted, and recorded into words. The process creates micro-imperfections in printing, similar to spontaneity, or even comparable to how improvisation in jazz can lead to an unexpected but pleasant result. The result of two years of research by O.OO, a graphic design studio based in Taipei, the main focus of this publication is colour separation and experimentation with images. The studio does not claim the colour separation methods described here to be absolute or the “right” way, but offer resources in hopes that they can provide helpful advice in practice while on the path to professionalism in this field.

Flaneur Issue 08: Taipei Wanda Road

Isbn 9783945918074
Publisher Edition Messner
Idea code 19410
€ 20.00

The eighth issue of ‘Flaneur’ is devoted to the intersection of Kangding Road and Wanda Road in Taipei, a crossroads of layered colonial and urban histories. Taipei had always held a certain fascination for the editorial team, so when the opportunity arose to do a three-month artist residency at Taipei Art Village Treasure Hill, they seized the moment. In an interdisciplinary, collaborative effort, the axis is mapped out from different angles, revealing the layers, colonial implications, unvoiced stories, and contradictions of this place of displacements. With diverse contributions by more than fifteen local artists and writers, the magazine delves into the oldest part of the Taiwanese capital.

The Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2018

Isbn 9783909928521
Publisher Bundesamt Fur Kultur Bern
Idea code 19339
€ 29.30

Presented here are the results of the annual competition to discover the most beautiful Swiss books, but published as nineteen separate issues. Designer Teo Schifferli transformed the nineteen winning books into vessels for the catalogue, with a graphic concept exploring the relationship between original and reproduction. Each randomly distributed volume reproduces the entire content of one of the awarded books, but then standardised in print, format, and paper, and contains a second section which reports on the competition and winners. The result is a book that is also a facsimile – a model of the original. Included are text contributions by Tan Wälchli and Joost Grootens.

Bobst Graphic 1971-1981 (Eng Ed)

Isbn 9783038630401
Publisher Triest Verlag
Idea code 19412
€ 25.10

The second volume of the ‘Visual Archives’ series focuses on the largely unknown history of Bobst Graphic. In the early 1970s this Swiss packaging company, seeking to combine new technology with the high-tech capabilities of computing, launched its line of phototypesetting machines. These would revolutionise the quality of typography. Through the efforts of leading Swiss designers, various font families were developed for the new technique. Bobst Graphic’s pioneering role in the development of phototypesetting has never been included in the rich history of Swiss graphic and font design. Through first-hand accounts and personal interviews, new light is shed on this story.

Publisher Centrecentre
Idea code 19427
€ 26.55

'To Evelyn' is a collection of local entertainers’ posters from a working men’s club in a small Yorkshire pit village. Originally collected in the 1990s by local personality Evelyn Short and now assembled by her grandson David, the posters are a celebration of a bygone era. Pre-internet and social media, this was one of the few ways to create another you, presenting an identity far removed from the day to day. The book explores national identity and sense of self, reminding us that with the right imagination we can transform into anyone or anything. The posters, many signed "To Evelyn" celebrate those identities, the weekend superstars, in all their glory.

Science Of The Secondary 10: Toilet Paper

Isbn 9789811403804
Publisher Atelier Hoko
Idea code 19312
€ 18.70

‘Science of the Secondary’ is a creative project by Singapore-based Alvin Ho and Clara Koh, who together go by HOKO. The series is a way for them to investigate the everyday and rediscover our curiosity about things and practices so familiar that we often overlook them. The tenth issue looks at toilet paper, the life of which is fundamentally short-lived. Even though its absence is a major cause of panic for toilet users, the toilet roll remains a lowly object, and occasionally even cause for embarrassment. Considering how excreting faeces is a daily affair for most, such sentiments towards a roll of tissue destined to keep one’s hygiene in order seems rather immature.

His Motter Tektura would long define the brand design of Apple and Reebok. His career as a typeface designer reached an all-time high when his Motter Corpus was issued by the International Typeface Corporation in New York. German text only.

Index Type

Isbn
Publisher Propaganda
Idea code 19293
€ 15.35

Designed by Kim Taihun, this small book serves as a type specimen for INDEX, a bookshop located in Seoul, Korea. The typeface was designed for the bookshop’s logo, and plays a role in its identity as well. At first glance, the extreme contrast between the horizontal and vertical strokes, the dramatic geometrical construction, and striking usage of the colour red seems incongruous with the name of INDEX bookshop. But these characteristics are actually intentional frictions, which in turn contribute a sufficient amount of wit and sense to the bookshop’s image.

It features a large iconography, archives, and texts by sculptor and Schlegel specialist Hélène Bertin. Originally published in 2017 on the occasion of an exhibition at CAC Brétigny, it forms a fitting tribute to Schlegel, who can be considered one of the most important ceramists of 1950s. She conceived her works as sculptures inspired by nature, primitive but sophisticated at the same time. An extensive look at her sculpted interiors and architectural elements in plaster, especially the numerous fireplaces she created, is also featured.

They Live: A Visual And Cultural Awakening

Isbn 9781912722181
Publisher Rough Trade Books
Idea code 19368
€ 30.10

Written and directed by filmmaker John Carpenter, ‘They Live’ (1988) is a cult classic. Despite being dismissed by critics at the time, the film has since earned a reputation for its political satire, social commentary, philosophical and technological forecasting, and visual aesthetics. Conceived by designer Craig Oldham, this publication is a celebration of the film’s significance today, and explores its influences, inspiration, and ideas, as well as its unnervingly topical social, cultural, and political relevance. From the ‘Matrix’ films, popular ’80s nostalgia, and conspiracy theories, to rampant consumerism and fake news, ‘They Live’ resonates in our world today, perhaps now more than ever.

Obake Origami - Monster. Ghost, Yokai, Uma!?

Isbn 9784861527395
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 19396
€ 12.90

Obake are a type of yokai, or preternatural creatures in Japanese folklore. The term literally means “a thing that changes”, referring to a state of transformation or shapeshifting. ‘Obake Origami’ might be inspired by these creatures, but the book also clearly mixes traditional Japanese imagery with familiar Halloween tropes from the West: bats, vampires, mummies, and the classic jack-o’-lantern. Each page offers a different foldable design with step-by-step instructions. Yousuke Jikuhara and Miki Takeda, who together comprise the graphic design team Cochae, have been exploring the “design of play” since 2003. This is just one in a series of their playful origami books.
