David Berge - A Walk In High Resolution

Isbn 9789492852229
Publisher Jap Sam Books
Idea code 19663
€ 20.00

Since 2008, Belgium artist David Bergé has been making Walk Pieces, during which he guides participants in silence along a precise trajectory and within a precise timeframe through textures and infrastructures that comprise the city. Walking together resonates with the phenomenological minutiae of street life and for the entire duration of the Walk Piece, participants refrain from verbal exchange and picture taking. Participating in a Walk Piece and/or your personal experience of reading this book are the only valid materializations of David Bergé’s ephemeral works.

Perry Kretz - Perryworld

Isbn 9783906822310
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 19626
€ 46.80

Neutral, looking with open eyes in every direction. This is how Perry Kretz views his work. Born in Cologne in 1933, he got his start as a photographer in New York in the 1950s and built his career as a photojournalist on easy interactions with not only local people, but also police investigators, the military, prison inmates, gang members, and more. Whether his subjects were the victim or the perpetrator, Kertz’s characteristic respect for everyone in front of his lens comes across in the extraordinary intensity and immediacy of his images. This comprehensive tribute to his decades of international work includes celebrity portraits, war zones, narcotics trafficking, and the Mafia.

Daido Moriyama: Record 42

Isbn
Publisher Akio Nagasawa
Idea code 19654
€ 26.30

In this instalment of his ‘Record’ series, Daido Moriyama reflects on his beginnings as a photographer, when he worked as an assistant at the Iwamiya Photos studio in Osaka. A mere youth at the time, he had yet to develop a feeling for cameras, but he borrowed one from the studio anyway and went to photograph the streets of Kyoto, where he used to live. Years later, when Moriyama had just moved to Tokyo, he spent nights roaming the streets of Shinjuku, snapping pictures of couples. The sight of these “Tokyo lovers” must have been cause for envy and jealousy for the young man from Osaka, considering how progressive this kind of behaviour was at that time.

Lars Dyrendom - American Sights

Isbn 9783945900420
Publisher Edition Taube
Idea code 19600
€ 45.95

The View-Master was first launched in the United States in 1939. The device was an updated version of the stereoscope and enabled people to view three-dimensional images of tourist attractions and travel views in full colour. The reels of the View-Master and their photographic images served as souvenirs of visited as well as unvisited sights. 'American Sights' is a photographic journey back in time, transporting us to 20th century vistas and highlighting touristic artefacts from the beginning of mass image production. Four hundred 3D View-Master reels were browsed to select a series that carries a romantic distance between the image and the viewer.

‘Trigger’ is a new platform launched by Fotomuseum Antwerpen for research, reflection, and dialogue on all things photographic. This first publication on “Impact” is made in close collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KABK), The Hague, and guest editor Donald Weber. It aims to cast impact as a re-enactment or assertion of radical intimacy, initiate a different gaze on the world, and show that impact can also exist within an ecology or geography of photography. Through 20 contributions by Ariella Azoulay, Lewis Bush, Taco Hidde Bakker, Andrew Jackson and Savannah Dodd, Shahidul Alam, Andrea Stultiens, and more, we learn how impact is social, participative, conflictual.

Brigham Baker - Only Apples

Isbn 9783945900451
Publisher Edition Taube
Idea code 19599
€ 26.55

Brigham Bakers first artists’ book 'Only Apples' includes what the title suggests: Nothing more than apples. It shows analogue close-up photos of apples as they ripen, hanging from the tree and slowly rot. The long-term study has resulted in an intimate, autobiographically coloured work that deals with time, change, and transience. In the process, echoes of classic vanitas still lifes are evoked and at the same time constantly undermined. The photographic works are supplemented by a short story written by the artist.

Paris Colours - Gerard Ifert Ektachromes 1953-1954

Isbn 9782490077236
Publisher Editions B42
Idea code 19567
€ 26.90

It is no wonder that colourmen’s shopfronts in 1950s Paris caught Gérard Ifert’s eye. The young Swiss designer was drawn to this anonymous street art, and he would capture these geometrical and colourful compositions during long walks through the city with his camera in hand. He considered them vernacular equivalents of Swiss Concrete painting. This book presents a surprising series of Ifert’s photographs, vividly bringing the art form to life. In addition, it tells of a designer at the outset of his career, who questions relationships between art and design by examining the transformation of urban landscapes and appreciating the aesthetics of everyday life.

Swiss photographer René Groebli commands an oeuvre that cannot be reduced to a single subject or genre, or even just one style. As an artist he has continually reinvented himself, a multifaceted talent with an eye for new directions in the field, often while engaging in a sceptical critique of how we live. This expansive monograph consists of a personal selection made by Groebli: photographs and images spanning his entire career as an “artist in motion”, from New Objectivity, photojournalism, experimental nudes, portrait studies, and landscapes, to commercial advertising, montage techniques, rethinking colour, and the pictorial expressions of dream metaphors.

This publication consists of a collection of photographs that were taken in the years from 2013 through 2016, wherein Dabrowski documents a personal investigation into the “roots” of her family that brought her to both Poland and Ukraine. It is a poignant and very personal narrative which reveals a story of expatriation, war crimes, and traumas. A conversation with her grandfather about his memories of Poland’s dark past completes the story. The title translates as “reveal” or “open”.

Idea code 19504

Kaveh Kazemi got his start in 1979 by covering the Iranian Revolution and its aftermath, but in 1984 he decided to leave his homeland and expand his career as a photojournalist. For his first self-commissioned assignment abroad, he chose Northern Ireland. Diving into the heart of Belfast during the Troubles, Kazemi was able to link up with key IRA contacts and photograph the conflicted neighbourhoods, marches, scores of murals, and British military patrols and checkpoints that set the tone during the turbulent 1980s in the region called Ulster. His keen eye for detail against this backdrop of violence now serves as a reminder of a painful past in this collection of photographs.

Getaway is a photobook that plays out in a parallel universe a little closer to the sun. Five Danish photographers have been on a photographic expedition to this lost and blazing world and the book is a collection of images they brought back with them. Getaway is about a place where we enjoy, dream, escape, recover and confront the absence of everyday life: the fake reality we call vacation. Photo's by Ulrik Jantzen, Kasper Witte Larsen, Emil Jakobsen, Simon Caspersen and Kasper Kristoffersen.

Marina Gadonneix’s practice lies on the crossroads between reality and ction, with her aesthetic merging landscape photography and scienti c, documentary photography. The result gives an impression of a scienti c discovery. 'Phénomènes' originates from Kristan Birkeland’s experiments of the early 20th century, where he reproduced the aurora (polar lights) in laboratory conditions. This experiment inspired Gadonneix to question the arti cial reproduction of phenomena that are simultaneously scienti c and enigmatic in nature.

Chris Rhodes - Hotel Mermaid Club

Isbn 9791090306905
Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 19522
€ 40.85

The first photobook by Chris Rhodes is an ode to daily life, wherein he transforms reality to recreate a calming and poetic universe that flirts with melancholia. His use of colours and framing offer nostalgia through iconic references that define the faded glamour of a trivial aesthetic. The series focuses on people and the “self-made landscapes” they create. Although portraiture in a traditional sense is non-existent here, figurative representation is systematically suggested through objects and colours. Making obvious and extreme what otherwise goes unnoticed, it unfolds as a “cabinet of curiosity” gleaned from across eight countries, from Europe to South America.

Paul Knight - Jump Into Bed With Me

Isbn 9780987637154
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 19590
€ 24.55

The seemingly conflicting qualities of intimacy and distance come to define the work of Australian-born, Berlin-based photographer and artist Paul Knight. Part of a wider, ongoing project documenting the day-to-day life Knight has shared with his partner Peter over the course of their relationship, his first book considers intimacy as a conceptual proposition. To frame it, he simply positions his 35mm camera and sets a timer. Paired with a transcript of the couple’s history of text messages to one another, the book is at once missive to a lover and an ode to photography’s intrinsic processes. The camera, when left to its own devices, can capture wonderful and beautiful things.

The Eyes 10

Publisher The Eyes
Idea code 19677
€ 26.90

In November 2019 Europe celebrated the 30-year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, an event that in its time symbolized hope, a sign of a new freedom for all nations. And yet today, there is an ever-increasing number of walls dividing us. In 1989 there were 11 such walls in the world; there are now 65, of which more than a dozen have sprung up since 2010. This 10th edition of The Eyes addresses the issue of the space these limits occupy in a world that is animated by both the need and the temptation to cross. Political demonstrations, social degradation and attacks on freedom of movement all confront us with the pernicious and often devastating effects of divisions.

Ari Marcopoulos - Boarding Pass

Isbn 9780648262886
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 20453
€ 31.10

For photographer and filmmaker Ari Marcopoulos, air travel is quite a point of obsession. Before moving to New York in 1980, where he would eventually carve out a career defined by his raw and intimate renderings of some of America’s most significant subcultural protagonists, he spent much of his childhood flying with his father, a commercial airline pilot. ‘Boarding Pass’ takes this experience of flight and the machines that make it possible as its defining motifs. The characteristically intuitive, spontaneous images in this volume offer countless perspectives of airplanes on the tarmac or in flight, rerouting our gaze from the pragmatic and economic towards the poetic.
