Walid Raad - Let's Be Honest, The Weather Helped

Isbn 9789492811707
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 20053
€ 31.80

Based in New York, the Lebanese-born artist Walid Raad (1967) often deals with the significance of locale in his work, and particularly with how different forms of violence or disruptive events can affect the lives of objects, ideas, or artworks. The artist’s appearances during and literally in the midst of his exhibitions are also an integral part of his practice. This extensive catalogue is published on the occasion of ‘Let’s be honest, the weather helped’, shown at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, and offers a comprehensive overview of three long-term projects by Raad, along with a live performance piece entitled ‘Kicking the Dead and/or Les Louvres’.

Mark Manders Composition With Yellow Verticals

Isbn 9789492811714
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 20042
€ 10.00

This diminutive volume is published in conjunction with the exhibition ‘The Absence of Mark Manders’ at the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, an extensive retrospective of the Dutch artist. It shows how his distinct oeuvre develops organically, from old work that has been revised to his latest creations. The exhibition therefore constitutes both an overview of the artist’s work and a new step in his artistic process, and also makes visible how his body of work is constantly developing. Both the exhibition and book present Manders’s sculptures and installations in an intimate and dynamic way, with the latter offering many behind-the-scenes glimpses at his artistic process.

Jim Dine - Palazzo Delle Esposizioni Roma

Isbn 9788822904676
Publisher Quodlibet
Idea code 20079
€ 30.10

This comprehensive monograph on American pop artist Jim Dine (1935) appears in conjunction with an exhibition of his work in Rome. Spanning over six decades of activity, it offers a close reading of Dine’s complex artistic biography and oeuvre. Many of these works are considered precursors to some of the most interesting art being produced today. The happenings, in particular, which Dine and his friends initiated in 1960 and are covered in great detail, were essential to the success of contemporary performance art. Besides reproductions of large-scale paintings, fetish objects, and minimalist sculptures, the book includes texts by the artist and in-depth critical analyses.

Feminist Art Activisms and Artivisms

Isbn 9789492095725
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 20065
€ 26.75

The first volume in the new ‘Plural’ series, this publication seeks to critically dissect the term “activism”, which today seems to have become a catchword for any woman’s empowerment through the arts, and reveal the diversity of practices and realities that it comprises. Presenting a range of critical insights, perspectives, and practices from artists, activists, and academics, it reflects on the role of feminist interventions in the field of contemporary art, the public sphere, and politics. In the process, it touches upon broader questions of cultural difference, history, class, economic standing, ecological issues, and sexual orientation, as well as the ways in which these intersect.

Yes Yes Yes Revolutionary Press In Italy 1966-1977 From Mondo Beat To Zut

Isbn 9788897753551
Publisher Viaindustriae
Idea code 20052
€ 43.00

Densely filled with reproductions of newspapers, magazines, mimeographs, news-sheets, pamphlets, and other ephemera, this book investigates the Italian scene during the turbulent years between 1966 and 1977. These revolutionary printing activities were linked to the political, ideological, and countercultural struggle of a period of protest and occupation of public spaces as areas of freedom and social creativity for a disillusioned generation. A selection of over 600 publications are catalogued in this book, output from the subversive newsrooms of the radical artistic and libertarian movements, and “ultra-political” groups, autonomists, and other collectives seeking change.

Michal Rovner - Writings

Isbn 9788494509698
Publisher Ivorypress
Idea code 20090
€ 43.00

‘Writings’ is a specially commissioned artist’s book of previously unpublished work by Israeli photographer and video artist Michal Rovner. “Writings fascinate me. The gesture, the visual language, the formality of rows, spaces, columns, the rhythm, the pace, especially when it seems unclear, unresolved, non-deciphered, the erasure, the absence of information, the residue of time.” The book contains very few actual words; instead, its pages are filled with Rovner’s characteristic typographic human figures in motion, appearing only to disappear, indiscernible from a distance. She offers us an enigmatic testament seemingly written in a language that has yet to be deciphered.

Izabela Pluta - Figures Of Slippage And Oscillation

Isbn 9780648680109
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 20088
€ 36.00

Sydney-based photographer and artist Izabela Pluta’s debut book draws on a series of darkroom contact prints that were conceived by shining light through the pages of out-of-print editions of ‘The Reader’s Digest Great World Atlas’. This philosophical and conceptual grappling with geography and cartography bears witness to the turbulence, mutability, and power structures that both prop up and undermine the static dogmas of the global map. The world as we know it blurs and collapses in on itself in these elusively detailed images, where flow and miasma gently erase the borders and demarcations – the strategic fictions and mythologies – we use to define our semantics of place.

1700-1800

Isbn 9789462084995
Publisher Rijskmuseum/ Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 20075
€ 40.00

The eighteenth century is the most international century in Dutch (art) history. This book, with 100 objects from the Rijksmuseum's collection of eighteenth-century art and history, demonstrates this perfectly – even if only by the iconic picture of a Dutch girl at breakfast painted in 1756 by Swiss artist Jean-Etienne Liotard. Many other paintings, sculptures, pieces of furniture, silver and golden showpieces, and other works of art were made in the Republic by artists from elsewhere. Here they are placed beside some highlights from leading art centres: Paris, Rome, but also Neuwied, where Abraham and David Roentgen made Europe’s most beautiful furniture.

Van Eyck In Detail: De Compacte Uitgave

Isbn 9789493039322
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 20078
€ 14.90

Pocket-editie.

Robert Motherwell - Collages

Isbn 9788412134834
Publisher CAC Málaga
Idea code 20067
€ 36.20

Published on the occasion of an exhibition of work by American artist Robert Motherwell (1915–1991), this catalogue illustrates the evolution of collage during his lifetime. The show comprises a selection of 26 artworks on paper, which the artist created between 1960 and 1989. This work is marked by the coexistence of different media and techniques, and characterised by his intuitive tearing methods, similar to the brushstrokes of abstract expressionist paintings. Motherwell’s collages combine package labels, torn paper, cardboard, and other materials, revealing how he viewed the pictorial surface as a testing ground to create sensations with no prior point of reference.

Jalal Toufic - Postscripts

Isbn 9789492811721
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 20041
€ 9.70

Jalal Toufic’s ‘Postscripts’ appears on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Let’s be honest, the weather helped’ by Walid Raad at Moderna Museet, Stockholm. The author has made known that some works are not just thought-provoking, they are also initiations into thinking. The aphorisms included in ‘Postscripts’ function as supplements to Toufic’s previous books, being at the same time both clarifications and disclosures of his earlier material. It is a series of thought experiments constructed from discontinuous scenes, reflections, and questions about the complex relationship between reality and fiction, simulation and phantasy, dreaming and wakefulness, and life and death.

Jeroen Janssen - Proverbs From Rwanda Imagini Migufi

Isbn
Publisher Black Olive Press
Idea code 20076
€ 2.00

Jeroen Janssen’s humorously illustrated collection of Rwandan proverbs was inspired by the time he spent there in the early 1990s, as an art school teacher. The pictures are based on linocuts, and the bold risograph printing gives the book’s pages a distinctly vibrant appearance. As with many cultures outside of Africa, quite a few of the short stories or proverbs Janssen relates are about animals. Others are about milk, which has special significance in Rwandan culture, and there are even proverbs about defecation and bodily orifices. The book is a collaboration of sorts, with its distinct comic book style designed by Rob Westendorp and printing by the cartoonist known as Wasco.

Arnaldo Pomodoro's Labyrinth

Isbn 9788875708177
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 20060
€ 18.15

Inspired by Arnaldo Pomodoro’s environmental work 'Ingresso nel labirinto', this book presents activities and experiments that trace a sensory path towards the discovery of the work: a new way of making contemporary art known to children, through direct experiments that extend from the inside of the labyrinth to the outside, to the house, to the school. With maps to trace, surfaces to capture, materials and sounds to catalogue and alphabets to invent, children come into contact with the work of art and its meanings through the senses and rework the many ideas contained in the labyrinth from their own point of view.

Again And Again And Again And

Isbn 9788896296202
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code
€ 23.40

This volume appears in conjunction with an eponymous exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art of Bologna and comprises a collection of writings that address the topics of loop, repetition, and cyclicity in the contemporary world. The loop is a concept that has moved from modernism to postmodernism, in the process expanding its meaning, and continues in today’s digital world. A number of contemporary artists and thinkers contribute their views on this topic, providing fragments, stories, and new perspectives. As yet unpublished texts by Federico Campagna and Elizabeth Povinelli also question our current idea of time and the forms of knowledge and power that derive from it.

Izumi Kato - Like A Rolling Snowball

Isbn 9784861527470
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 20040
€ 35.00

Izumi Kato began his career as a painter in the mid-1990s, and during the 2000s expanded the range of his expression to include wooden sculptures, which he continues to produce today. This catalogue is published on the occasion of an eponymous exhibition of over 200 works by Kato at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, providing an extensive overview of his oeuvre. Kato is recognised for grotesque, human-like forms reminiscent of the “primitivism” embraced by artists such as Picasso. With his malformed yet beautiful representations, some even say Kato is the latest successor to Picasso’s legacy. The book includes essays and an interview with the artist.
