Mariken Wessels - Miss Cox

Isbn 9789490119836
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 20113
€ 30.00

This project by Dutch photographer Mariken Wessels (1963) is a multifaceted artistic translation of her fascination with an anonymous woman who posed for Eadweard Muybridge’s camera in 1885. In the 24-image sequence “Arising from the Ground”, the obese woman, who was supposedly named Miss Cox, can be observed as she moves from lying down to a fully upright position. Wessels was inspired by this woman to start making large clay sculptures and photographing obese female models swimming underwater. In these images she focuses on the landscapes the human body assumes when immersed in water. The book also presents studio views, sketches, and other research.

This book is published to accompany a retrospective of his work in Brussels, the scope of which includes nearly 400 images – an invitation to enter a sublime, magnificent, and marvellous world.

Helena Van Der Kraan - Portretten / Portraits

Isbn 9789072532435
Publisher Van Zoetendaal Publishers
Idea code 20120
€ 39.50

‘Portraits’ consists of a photographic series on teddy bears by Helena van der Kraan (1940-2020), a project which she has worked on over a period of five years. The teddy bears she portrays originate from different places – borrowed from friends, found at garage sales, or gifted by “bear spotters” – and their well-worn, sometimes ragged appearance hints at a lifetime of memories. Van der Kraan poses the bears in natural light for portraits that she takes using an analogue camera, which seems appropriate to the touching and emotional character of her images. This book is published on the occasion of an exhibition of Van der Kraan’s teddy bear portraits at Fotomuseum Den Haag.

Adrian Samson - Mother

Isbn 9783906213316
Publisher Rollo Press
Idea code 20104
€ 34.00

London-based photographer Adrian Samson has received commissions from a diverse selection of clients over the years, including the Frieze Art Fair, Miu Miu, ‘Wallpaper*’, ‘Numero Berlin’, and ‘The New York Times’. But for this more personal project he gathered a collection of images in a tender tribute to motherhood. Objects like toys, nappies, and clothes are mingled with close-ups of fruits and bodies. The softness of a baby’s skin becomes tangible as it snuggles against its mother. A playground patiently awaits the moment when the child is old enough to clamber around. And an entire series of pictures of the baby’s hands emphasises the process of grasping and learning by touch.

Daido Moriyama: Record 43

Isbn
Publisher Akio Nagasawa
Idea code 20108
€ 27.65

The photographs in the first half of this issue were shot in Gothenburg, Sweden, when Moriyama visited the city to receive an award from the Hasselblad Foundation in 2019. He notes that “it is a pleasant city that is characterised by a harmonic blend of past and present, and a casual scent of art and culture in the air.” The images in this issue’s second half were shot in Japan, probably in Moriyama’s customary stomping grounds of Tokyo. He expresses how he is continually inspired to carry his camera with him at all times, unable to put it down, constantly looking and snapping pics of what he sees. For Moriyama, publishing ‘Record’ has clearly taken on a life of its own.

Tereska And Her Photographer - A Story By David "chim" Seymour

Isbn 9791092727302
Publisher Russet Lederman
Idea code 20121
€ 49.50

When the Jewish-Polish photographer Dawid Szymin adopted American citizenship in 1942, he became David Seymour. He photographed a young girl known as Tereska in Warsaw in September 1948, during an assignment from UNICEF to report on Europe’s children after the war. Many assumed she was a concentration camp survivor, and the tangled chalk lines of her famous drawing represented barbed-wire fences. Seymour died in 1956, but in 2017 steps were undertaken to discover Tereska’s identity and story, with success. The extraordinary circumstances of the parallel lives of girl and photographer inspired this story, with anecdotes from a variety of people who knew them.

Immortal - Lost Memoirs Of Cornelia Dulac Concerning The Freshwater Polyp Hydra

Isbn 9789526089621
Publisher Aalto University
Idea code 20116
€ 40.00

Canadian biologist Cornelia Dulac has been missing since 2014. Her audiotapes were discovered at a remote cabin in Eastern Finland, itself a fully-equipped research laboratory with a freshwater well, gasoline for a generator, and a year’s supply of food. She had been researching hydra, a seemingly immortal freshwater polyp. Obviously, something interrupted Dulac’s plans. But the police do not suspect foul play and there are no leads. This book by artist Maija Tammi and illustrator and graphic designer Ville Tietäväinen combines scientific research, art, and storytelling in a complex visualisation of the regenerative hydra while delving into Dulac’s obsession.

Chantal Akerman (Belgium, 1950-2015) was one of the first film directors to switch to the visual arts, in the mid-1990s. The transition would mark the start of a second – parallel – career. By the early 1970s Chantal Akerman had grown into one of the most important feminist avant-garde filmmakers of her generation. She discovered the possibilities of exhibition spaces in 1995, when she screened her film 'D'Est', originally a documentary, as a large spatial installation on 24 monitors. This publication focuses on Chantal Akerman's spatial works of art and various authors discuss her highly personal oeuvre.
