Bruno Munari (Japanese Only)

Isbn 9784763018083
Publisher Kyuryudo
Idea code 20109
€ 36.05

Besides his work as a painter, designer, and prolific writer of picture books, the Italian artist Bruno Munari (1907–1998) devoted himself to children’s art education. Although it is difficult to grasp the scope of his wide-ranging activities, regardless of the genre, Munari’s works are based on a simple idea and are immediately appealing to anyone of any age. The itinerant Japanese exhibition ‘Bruno Munari: The Man Who Made the Useless Machines’ looks back at his career, which began with the Italian Futurists, by examining approximately 300 works. This comprehensive monograph complements and broadens the exhibition’s overview of his visionary life and work.

Isbn 9784903348520
Publisher Adp
Idea code 20110
€ 38.75

Aoki Ryo (1953–2005) devoted much of his life to creating ceramic pieces using a variety of techniques, among them white slip glaze, brush marks, iron glaze, white glaze, and firing without glaze. During his lifetime, he built up a large collection of his own favourite works and had expressed the desire to exhibit them, not for sale but as artworks. This monograph, made possible with the support of Aoki’s wife, Shoko, is a remarkable photographic record of this fine collection of tea bowls, jars, dishes, cups, vessels for sake, and more. The book’s production team visited Aoki’s atelier over a period of three years to document the objects and take detailed photographs for this project.

Designing Lightness - Structures For Saving Energy

Isbn 9789462085466
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 20097
€ 39.95

This book is an appeal to start designing minimum weight applications to seriously save energy. It also offers practical advice for doing so. 'Designing Lightness' entertains the reader with its free associations, creating unexpected crosslinks between the world of composite materials and structural solutions. It therefore precedes the conventional approach to sustainability, which focuses on symptoms rather than causes of environmental overload. The book is of interest to all designing disciplines, combining packaging, vehicles, skyscrapers, and nanoscale phenomena. This is the extended and improved sequel to the book ‘Lightness’, which appeared in 1998.

Adrian Samson - Mother

Isbn 9783906213316
Publisher Rollo Press
Idea code 20104

London-based photographer Adrian Samson has received commissions from a diverse selection of clients over the years, including the Frieze Art Fair, Miu Miu, ‘Wallpaper*’, ‘Numero Berlin’, and ‘The New York Times’. But for this more personal project he gathered a collection of images in a tender tribute to motherhood. Objects like toys, nappies, and clothes are mingled with close-ups of fruits and bodies. The softness of a baby’s skin becomes tangible as it snuggles against its mother. A playground patiently awaits the moment when the child is old enough to clamber around. And an entire series of pictures of the baby’s hands emphasises the process of grasping and learning by touch.

Erik Kessels: In Almost Every Picture 16: Sexy Sofa

Isbn 9789070478520
Publisher Kesselskramer
Idea code 20140
€ 24.30

Noud and Ruby decided to spruce up their living room in 1965 by refurnishing the fireplace and adding a new sofa, a tufted corner piece in a classy shade of beige velveteen; not a right-angled design, but a soft, sensual curve snaking around the corner of the room. Noud and Ruby’s redecorating set the scene for what would become a sincere and erotic collaboration between the couple that spanned almost ten years and documented both fashion and fantasy. But the pictures were never intended to be revealed outside their living room. This prompts us to question who we are behind closed doors and what sides of our identities we choose to conceal, even if they give us pleasure or satisfaction.

David Shillinglaw - Mattress Mantras

Isbn 9781912722457
Publisher Rough Trade Books
Idea code 20339
€ 10.30

British artist David Shillinglaw transforms the mundane mattress using his textual interventions, so they begin to carry both the meaning of the added words and a heightened sense of their own histories. These everyday objects suddenly become playful, philosophical, or literary, drawing our attention to the tension between the domestic and external environments. Whether discarded on the street or abandoned in a junk pile, the soiled mattresses that serve as Shillinglaw’s canvases – spray painting them with often existential wordplays – are simultaneously functional objects and art objects, representative of both our human interactions and our material refuse.

Publisher Nazar Publishing

In those years he created a series entirely focused on typography, a first in the history of Iranian graphic design. His cover designs result from a deep fascination with the structure of letters and composition of words, and he often experimented with positive and negative spaces, playing with different scales and empty spaces. This book is the result of nearly two years of research on Golpayegani, a progressive designer whose work is now recognised as far ahead of its time.

Dutch Type (Reprint)

Isbn 9783982003702
Publisher Druk Editions
Idea code 18529
€ 29.50

In ‘Dutch Type’, Jan Middendorp presents a comprehensive overview of type design and lettering in the Netherlands, tracing its origins through type designers and lettering artists from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Partly based on interviews, the book also offers insight into the motives and methods of the first generations of digital type designers, featuring published and unpublished typefaces as well as sketches, studies, and samples of lettering work. While the quest for quality and innovation has remained constant, it makes clear that the advent of desktop type has opened up the discipline to a more spontaneous, inventive, and democratic approach.
