AMAG 18 Alvaro Siza Built Works - Unbuilt Works (2 Vols)

Isbn 9789895462032
Publisher AMAG Publisher
Idea code 20031
€ 75.50

This special double issue extensively features both built and unbuilt work by Álvaro Siza. The Portuguese architect has developed a large number of projects, and the relationship between the realised and the concept is central to this examination of his career. Being equally attentive to the architect’s built and unbuilt works allows a global understanding of the plurality of situations that are found in his oeuvre to emerge. The first volume features finished works like the Nadir Afonso Museum, 611 West 56th Street in New York, and the Mimesis Museum, while the second volume of numerous unbuilt works includes sketches, drawings, and plans, as well as in-depth analysis.

Natural Elements - The Architecture Of Arkis Architects

Isbn 9789187543722
Publisher Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing
Idea code 20139
€ 52.80

Arkís Architects is known for its Nordic humanist architecture, which can be characterised both by being firmly rooted in the Icelandic tradition and landscape and incorporating international influences. Founded in 1997 and based in Reykjavík, the architecture studio is engaged in developing local knowledge based on sustainable design through a broad range of approaches. Arkís Architects tests an ecological concept where city and nature form a whole, rather than being opposites. This monograph features a selection of the studio’s most important projects, including Snæfellsstofa Visitor Centre, Reykjavík University, and Holmen Aquatics Centre.

Co-Ownership of Action - Trajectories of Elements

Isbn 9784887063860
Publisher Toto
Idea code 20136
€ 17.45

A wooden Japanese house slated for demolition will instead be moved to Venice for exhibition. Yet the house put on display will not appear in its original form. Dismantled for shipping, it will be reassembled on-site in new configurations created by architects and artisans from Japan, who will add new or local materials and other elements in the process. In other words, the exhibition of the house will be a fantastical installation that combines old and new in a composite of creative efforts by multiple designers and craftsmen. This book, edited by architect Kozo Kadowaki, explores the project in detail.

Exclusive photographs by Anna Nagai capture the distinct characters of the featured places, objects, and buildings.

Oase 105: Practices Of Drawing

Isbn 9789462085541
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 20144
€ 22.30

It is hard to overstate the importance of drawing for architectural practice. Ever since antiquity, architects have relied on drawings to conceptualise ideas, provide instructions for workers, and construct their ideas into architecture. The specific practices of drawing have changed over time, however, adapting to changing technologies. In doing so they have altered the production of architecture. This issue of OASE looks at architectural drawings as dynamic processes that shape architectural thinking.

This book revisits nine key projects in the duo’s internationally acclaimed oeuvre, including Liquid Light (Venice, 2018), Mills Museum (Palma de Mallorca, 2016), Building 111 (Barcelona, 2011), and Yutes Warehouse (Barcelona, 2005), plus collected images, models, and a conversation with Antoni Miralda.

Monu 32: Affordable Urbanism

Isbn 18603211
Publisher Board Publishers
Idea code 20146
€ 15.00

The creation of affordable urban spaces – whether for housing, working, infrastructure, or other functions – is a complex issue, as cost considerations must be balanced with important objectives like social usability, sustainability, aesthetics, etc. Moreover, urbanisation and gentrification have become synonymous to such an extent that they seem inescapably paired. The need to create more inclusive and affordable cities is paramount, as is the provision of proper shelter and places for creative and generative endeavour. Interviews with Jörn Walter and Annemie Depuydt and contributions from Will Hartely, Christopher de Vries, and others address these and related topics.

Courthouse Zwolle: Jo Kruger, Rob Hootsmans

Isbn 9789492058096
Publisher The Architecture Observer
Idea code 20126
€ 27.00

For both Jo Kruger (1914–1983) and Rob Hootsmans (1962) the architecture of the Courthouse in Zwolle, the Netherlands, was a long time in the making. Kruger began in 1963 with his project for a combined district and subdistrict court, which took fourteen years to be completed. In 2004, while still working for the Government Building Agency, Hootsmans began exploring how Kruger’s building could be expanded. He finished a new extension in 2013, and completed the renovation of Kruger’s original building in 2016. Even if the architecture of Jo Kruger is very different from that of Rob Hootsmans, it is somehow a meeting of kindred spirits.

Beyond Plant Blindness - Seeing The Importance Of Plants For A Sustainable World

Isbn 9783962160012
Publisher The Green Box
Idea code 20143
€ 29.10

Despite the challenges, there is a need for humans to engage conceptually and responsibly with non-human organisms possessing entirely different physiologies and behaviours. Plants, for instance, can appear still, silent, and passive in human perception. This book stems from a pedagogical, artistic, and botanical project undertaken between 2015 and 2018 by artists Bryndís Snæbjörnsdóttir and Mark Wilson, plant science educators Dawn Sanders and Eva Nyberg, and botanist Bente Eriksen. The team set out to implore a philosophical and actionable move beyond the cultural condition of “plant blindness”, and so to disrupt what is a traditional and debilitating human view.

A+U 594 20:03 Architecture In Chile In Search Of A New Identity

Isbn 9784900212480
Publisher Shinkenchiku-sha
Idea code 20102
€ 23.90

For many, it is the utopian vacation homes that brought Chilean architecture into the international spotlight, and yet now we are beginning to see a different group of architects investigating less individualistic visions. Chile’s idyllic landscape offers a perfect canvas for its architects to express poetry in their designs. As they engage with public or non-profit projects that focus on social and sustainable issues that had little traction under Chile’s oppressive military regime (1973–1990), they seek to forge a new cultural identity in a united land. This issue features a variety of work by Smiljan Radić, Max Núñez, Cazu Zegers Architects, OWAR Architects, Guillermo Acuña, and others.

Their architecture focuses on the immediate context, and particularly on the heritage of the canton of Ticino. This monographic volume, which features projects and competition entries designed following the addition of Romeo in 2012, details the firm’s material and formal concepts.
