Mark Manders - The Absence Of Mark Manders, Bonnefanten

Isbn 9789072251831
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 20184
€ 35.00

A catalogue of the extensive retrospective exhibition ‘The Absence of Mark Manders’ at the Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht. The rooms in the exhibition can be regarded as the spaces of the artist’s ongoing work ‘Self-portrait as a building’. The works have been “left behind” by the artist in three different zones: the visitor enters a living room, then the museum, and finally the studio. According to Manders, all of these works are interchangeable and can be put into a different context, “like words in a sentence can also be used in different combinations”. A text by Douglas Fogle focuses on the role of language in Manders’s oeuvre.

Hans Arp - Salvador Dali: The Birth Of Memory

Isbn 9783946770626
Publisher Strzelecki Books
Idea code 20112
€ 65.00

The exhibition ‘The Birth of Memory’ at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck in Germany is the first ever to mount such a focused presentation of the many connections between these two radical protagonists of modern art, who were acquainted in the Parisian surrealist circles. This catalogue looks at their shared roots through artistic and biographical intersections and overlaps. Although their affinity for visual art took wildly divergent paths, each artist influenced the other in many ways. Both departed from traditional academic painting to experiment with chance and intuition, humour and imagination, likewise becoming sources of inspiration for generations of artists to follow.

Vendredi - Une Correspondence Surrealiste

Isbn 9789493039247
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 20107
€ 125.00

'Vendredi' was one of the most unusual magazines issued by the Belgian surrealists. It was written by hand, never published, and created weekly for almost two years, from 1949 until the end of 1951. Over 100 issues were produced by its driving force, Paul Colinet, in collaboration with René Magritte, Marcel Mariën, Irène Hamoir, and Pierre Alechinsky, among others. Every Friday, Paul Colinet sent the magazine to his nephew, the artist Robert Willems, who was living in the Belgian Congo at the time. Each issue was a work of art in itself, containing illustrations, handwritten poems, and all manner of texts, news items, jokes, drawings, collages, and newspaper cuttings.

Ulrika Sparre - Ear To The Ground

Isbn 9789151943824
Publisher Art And Theory Publishing
Idea code 20132
€ 41.80

In her work, Ulrika Sparre investigates the mechanisms, behaviours, and social patterns that constitute our lives. The starting point for ‘Ear to the Ground’ is a search for the spiritual and physical in nature, and how these relationships are created and transformed. Moving through the archipelago of Stockholm, across the desert of Death Valley, and into caves in South Africa, Sparre explores rocks in their various forms and shapes. Along the way, the artist performs several field recordings of stones in which she reflects on what we perceive and take with us from an experience in rugged nature. With essays by Johan Redin, Virginia MacKenny, Jacquelyn Davis, and others.

Swiss Psychotropic Gold

Isbn 9783856169213
Publisher Christoph Merian
Idea code 20188
€ 26.90

The much lauded artist-duo knowbotiq are among the pioneers of the Swiss media scene. In their collaborative project 'Swiss Psychotropic Gold' they pursue the links in the global metabolism of gold and Switzerland’s role in it. They track down the fleeting and often invisible paths of the molecules, the emotions, and the violence. In this way we discover how that conflictladen precious metal is “purified” in the context of technocracy, philanthropy, and neutrality and refined for later use.

Erik Odijk - The Academy Of The Sublime

Isbn 9789492852212
Publisher Jap Sam Books
Idea code 20174
€ 35.00

Erik Odijk’s ‘The Academy of the Sublime’ presents drawings, works in public space, and photographs and film stills by the Dutch artist. Odijk is best known for his awe-inspiring large drawings made in his studio or on location, in which fragments from nature always form the most important visual elements. With graphic design by Studio Joost Grootens and contributions by various writers, the publication is an ode to attentive observation, something the artist sees as the connection between language and image. It consists of three large-format “magazines” illustrating the three distinct disciplines in the artist’s oeuvre, and shows a selection of Odijk’s highly immersive work from 2005 to the present.

Combining painting, sculpture, installation, and set design, Philipp Fürhofer’s multidisciplinary artistic practice is a blend of modern materials, mixed with historical elements. After graduating from the Universität der Künste Berlin, Fürhofer spent months in hospital with heart issues, culminating in a partial transplant. Inspired by his own chest X-rays and their transparency, he created acrylic glass boxes filled with structured objects, giving them new forms and reality. Juxtaposing different layers of the works with spy mirror foil, he often uses incandescent light bulbs, LED tubes that switch on and off to reveal different visions.

Birgitta De Vos - All In Nothing | Nothing In All

Isbn 9789081005951
Publisher Birgitta De Vos
Idea code 20137
€ 65.00

Living in the Netherlands, a fast-paced, material focused, densely populated country where too much to do in too little time seems to be a daily struggle, Dutch artist Birgitta de Vos longed for stillness. The result is this book, a silent retreat in which silence is the voice of the void and white is its colour. De Vos sees our daily lives as being a dance in duality, a continuous movement to find balance between opposite poles. In between our thoughts, experiences, actions, and emotions is an open space, an empty field. Filled with page after page of minimal geometric meditations, wherein the ellipse plays a significant role, this book invites you to let go and step into the unknown.

Jorg Schmeisser Retrospective: Neverending Journeys

Isbn 9784763018267
Publisher Kyuryudo
Idea code 20158
€ 29.80

After attending the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Jörg Schmeisser (1942–2012) studied in Kyoto and became deeply influenced by Japanese culture. He went on to travel extensively in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. His body of work can be characterised by two currents: the highly detailed, superbly accurate line and the flowing, sensual line. These coexist in his many etchings, intersecting with each other amidst a plethora of astonishing colours and subjects. This catalogue for a retrospective of Schmeisser’s work in Japan is based on research conducted in 2015, as part of the overseas study programme of the Japan Association of Art Museums.

Publisher Kyuryudo
Idea code 20194
€ 41.20

Published on the occasion of a large-scale solo exhibition by Leiko Ikemura, this dense and vibrant catalogue offers an engaging look at the Japanese-Swiss artist’s remarkable body of work. Over the years, Ikemura has experimented with the powerful colours and forms of neo-expressionism, to express the difficulties of being both a woman and a stranger, as well as dealt with themes such as small creatures and innocent girls, mothers and children, human figures merging with trees and mountains, and mythical scenes that evoke birth and death. Her introspective style – quiet, modest, and immersed deeply in her own vision – is keenly critical of the world and society today.

Miwa Komatsu - Yamato Power, To The World

Isbn 9784763018366
Publisher Kyuryudo
Idea code 20197
€ 55.75

Emerging artist Miwa Komatsu is known for her vibrant depictions of Shinto symbolism, and often does painting performances in front of a live audience. As a child, she became familiar with the mountainous regions of Nagano, Japan, where she befriended animals and first encountered the ‘komainu’ that protect shrines. These fierce guardians inspired Komatsu to develop her bright, exuberant acrylic painting style and saturated canvases. The creatures are both auspicious and frightening in Shinto teachings. Positioning herself at the intersection of the human and spiritual, Komatsu deftly harnesses this contrasting nature to reveal powerful lion-dogs, dragons, and more.

De Aankondiging Van Een Landscap

Publisher Grafische Cel
Idea code 20153
€ 26.00

Nigel Peake - Shiori

Isbn
Publisher Nigel Peake
Idea code 20087
€ 17.70

‘Shiori’ is published on the occasion of a 2019 exhibition at Utrecht bookshop in Tokyo. It pairs the last words from 52 stories from ‘Invisible Cities’ (1972), a novel by Italian journalist and writer of short stories Italo Calvino (1923–1985), with Nigel Peak’s uncomplicated illustrations of geometrical shapes, repetitive lines and patterns, and bold fields of colour. The result is a visual and poetical meditation on minimalism, one in which the viewer is asked to consider the hidden meanings underlying these associations as each page is turned.

Attilio Solzi - New Perspectives In Western Civilization

Isbn 9783952489437
Publisher Everyedition
Idea code 20111
€ 20.35

talian photographer Attilio Solzi presents an intensely conceptual study about a parallelepiped. The block of indeterminate white material that appears with the artist in this series of photographs can function as a base of a statue, the pedestal through which, climbing on it, one looks for the means to celebrate themselves. Moreover, this study of actions – the artist in relation to the block, the human body juxtaposed with the inanimate object – represents the effort of self-representation, according to Solzi. Each action is accompanied by totemic words and phrases of our contemporaneity.
