Awoiska Van Der Molen - The Living Mountain

Isbn 9789490119881
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 20170
€ 30.00

This is the third publication in which Awoiska probes deeply into the essence of the remote unspoiled natural worlds where her images are created. The book is published alongside the music composition ‘The Living Mountain’ written by Thomas Larcher as composer-in-residence at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The music piece draws inspiration from photographs that Awoiska made for Larcher in the mountains of his native Tirol (Austria). The monochrome landscapes are combined with Larcher’s music scores. The title for both the composition and book is taken from Nan Shepherd’s book of poetic prose on the Cairngorms mountains, published in 1977.

Xiaoxiao Xu - Watering my Horse by a Spring at the Foot of the Long Wall

Isbn 9789492051486
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 20149
€ 32.00

Xiaoxiao Xu embarks on a journey of 25,000 kilometres to document the lives of the people along the foot of the Great Wall of China. Contrary to popular belief, the wall is not a single, continuous structure, but rather a collection of walls and fortifications built during various Chinese dynasties. Her images show that, despite its decline in some of these parts, a lively relationship remains between the wall and local populations who honour and protect it. In the process, Xu attempts to discover the impact of fast-growing China on this historic site. The villages along the Great Wall still live by ancient traditions, but these are gradually disappearing. She captures this visual transformation.

Oliver Leu - Leopold's Legacy

Isbn 9789492051516
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 20150
€ 25.00

King Leopold II of Belgium was proclaimed the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State in 1885. Convincing the colonial European nations to commit to common trade and improving the lives of native inhabitants, he meanwhile extracted a fortune from the territory through an administration marked by forced labour, torture, and murder. Oliver Leu presents an eclectic collection of visual research, a reflection on both the visible representations of colonialism in Belgium today and the hidden traces of its gruesome past. He portrays an ambitious ruler with delusions of grandeur, showing the influence the exploitation of Leopold’s private colony still has on contemporary Belgium.

Sabrina Vitali - Fabrica

Isbn 9791090306929
Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 20190
€ 64.50

French artist Sabrina Vitali (1986) chronicles her six months of immersion, experimentation, and creation at the production facility of the Italian luxury hardware maker Renato Menegatti. She is the fourth artist in residence to be selected by LVMH Métiers d’Art. Her sculptural work during this period took shape through a poetic displacement of the techniques and various materials available at the factory, in turn shifting our usual understanding of metal in order to draw out its organic nature, suppleness, depth, and sensuality. This book offers not only evidence of her visual explorations but also a dialogue on the workshop, experiments, materials, and machines that Vitali encountered.

Valeria Cherchi - Some of you Killed Luisa

Isbn 9789492051530
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 20183
€ 25.00

‘Some of You Killed Luisa’ is Valeria Cherchi’s attempt to decode the complex structure of the phenomenon of widespread kidnappings that occurred in her homeland, the island of Sardinia, between the 1960s and 1990s. During that time, almost 200 people were kidnapped and held for ransom. But how does one tell a story bound by uncertainty? How do we talk about histories that are only partially concluded? Cherchi is one of the few artists to deal with this dark chapter of Sardinian history by defining the parts of the story that are reliable. This book is the outcome of several years of field research, interaction with local communities, and looking through archives and family photo albums.

Erik Kessels: In Almost Every Picture 16: Sexy Sofa

Isbn 9789070478520
Publisher Kesselskramer
Idea code 20140
€ 24.30

Noud and Ruby decided to spruce up their living room in 1965 by refurnishing the fireplace and adding a new sofa, a tufted corner piece in a classy shade of beige velveteen; not a right-angled design, but a soft, sensual curve snaking around the corner of the room. Noud and Ruby’s redecorating set the scene for what would become a sincere and erotic collaboration between the couple that spanned almost ten years and documented both fashion and fantasy. But the pictures were never intended to be revealed outside their living room. This prompts us to question who we are behind closed doors and what sides of our identities we choose to conceal, even if they give us pleasure or satisfaction.

Matt Eich - The Seven Cities

Isbn 9783906822334
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 20141
€ 3.50

Conceived as a four-part series, Matt Eich’s 'The Seven Cities' is the third volume in 'Invisible Yoke', which takes a hard look at the people America seems to have forgotten about. Here, Eich turns his focus on Virginia, the state he calls home. These pictures exist as the by-product of his obsessive documentation of family and community over a fourteen-year period. The people in these images are older now, if they are even still alive. The landscape changes almost before our very eyes. What will be left in 20 years, in 50? It seems likely that copies of this book may outlast many of the homes depicted.

Alexis Pazoumian - Sacha

Isbn 9791092265910
Publisher Andre Frere Editions
Idea code 20127
€ 39.80

With this project, Alexis Pazoumian documents the history of Sacha and his community of reindeer herders, whose future is more than uncertain. Isolation and extreme temperatures make working conditions difficult, and today there are fewer and fewer reindeer herders. The daily life of these hunters is changing due to climate change, bringing unpredictable weather and higher temperatures, rising 4°C over the last 40 years. Nomadic herders are not aware of such figures, but they are the first to observe how environmental changes and the warming trend has dramatic consequences on their lives and animals.

Monika Macdonald - Hulls

Isbn 9791092265927
Publisher Andre Frere Editions
Idea code
€ 31.90

In this book, Monika Macdonald focuses on the masculine. While her images echo classical pictorial iconography in their treatment of the nude, pose, or light, she draws portraits that are far removed from the traditional representations of the virility and beauty of the men she observes. Macdonald, once again, shatters norms. It is a question of flesh, of confusion, of doubts, of the vulnerability of body, mind and feelings. She organises posing sessions behind closed doors, and these face-to-face sessions sometimes seem so stressful that the photographer/photographed relationship is pushed to its ultimate limits.

Piotr Zbierski - Echoes Shades

Isbn 9791092265897
Publisher Andre Frere Editions
Idea code 20131
€ 39.80

In many beliefs there is an alternate world that exists between what we are taught is real and what lies beyond. Piotr Zbierski seeks to explore pathways between these two realities by crafting an impressionistic visual record of humanity. He has travelled extensively, focusing on a number of different communities, photographing and paying homage to their ceremonies and daily rituals. For many of the tribes, these traditions act as a bridge between material reality and a spiritual understanding of the wider world. In his practice he considers how different cultures express and communicate their ancient ancestral connections to nature and this experience of an ‘in-between’ world.

Alexander Arnild Peitersen - From Now On

Isbn 9788797052051
Publisher Disko Bay
Idea code 20165
€ 40.00

Danish photographer Alexander Arnild Peitersen’s series ‘From Now On’ is a fragmented reflection on times that have passed, depicted in an array of monochrome and colour images captured using multiple camera formats over a period of six years. While focusing on themes such as transition and memory, and investigating issues like isolation, alienation, and nature, the work also inhabits a space of mysticism and poetry. It can be read as stories, rituals, or attempts to map out the necessities needed to survive as a human being. Scenes of landscapes, hunting, dancing, drinking, and the unforgiving reality of nature’s dominance all interweave in Peitersen’s set of images.

Hassan Hajjaj blends artistic themes and genres from a diverse range of influences. He creates a whimsical, eccentric universe, initiating a dialogue between tradition and modernity, culture and pop culture. Known for his colourful portraits, somewhere between documentary and fashion, Hajjaj also integrates African prints and textiles and manipulated logos in compositions, a visual re-appropriation of global consumerism and a critical interpretation of oriental exoticism. This first major monograph of his work coincides with a retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie. It includes his best-known and celebrated series along with previously unpublished works.

Berenice Abbott - Selected Writings

Isbn 9788412090802
Publisher Ivorypress
Idea code 20185
€ 20.65

Berenice Abbot (1898–1991) is best known for her work in the fields of architecture, portraiture, and science. She first learned photography in Paris, as an assistant to Man Ray. It was at his studio where she also encountered work by Eugène Atget (1857–1927), who in turn played an influential role in her practice. Abbot was committed to modernity and capturing the poetry of the moment, whether through inventing new techniques for taking pictures of physics experiments or shooting the streets of New York. This book casts a fascinating look back at her writings, combining precise instructions and theoretical content in texts aimed towards either professionals or amateurs.

Sleep Creek - Dylan Hausthor & Paul Guilmoth

Isbn 9786185479060
Publisher Void
Idea code 20182
€ 35.75

Artists Dylan Hausthor and Paul Guilmoth started ‘Sleep Creek’ in 2016, when they lived together on Peaks Island off the coast of Maine, a place accessible only by boat. The island’s boundary was their perimeter to make photographs. The project began as a documentary of a piece of land and the stories of its inhabitants, but expanded to include autobiographical elements. It portrays a landscape filled with trauma and beauty, a place where animals are only seen when hunted and humans balance between an unapologetic existence and deep secrecy. The haunting images are at once documentary and fictional, weaving myth and symbol and in order to confront us with the experiential.

Thomas Sauvin - '17 18 19'

Isbn 9786188434141
Publisher Void
Idea code 20181
€ 45.95

Thomas Sauvin’s ’17-18-19’ is a series comprised of images taken from a bag of negative film salvaged from a recycling plant on the outskirts of Beijing in 2010. Shot at one of the city’s detention centres between 1991 and 1993, the archive contained over 15,000 black-and-white negatives of confiscated objects, contraband, and evidence. Without any further information or context, we are left to wonder about their unidentified owners and the events to which they bear witness. Reproduced here in their original form as negatives, every item is preserved like an artefact – a fossil for our examination. The utilitarian function of the negatives thus allows compassion to arise from memory.

Yuki Iwanami - One Last Hug

Isbn 9784861527524
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 20173
€ 46.05

Nine years after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami devastated East Japan in March 2011, the lives of 2,532 people are still unaccounted for, their fates unknown. Photojournalist Yuki Iwanami follows three fathers whose children were swept away during the tsunami, never to be found again. The book begins with a poignant series of crumpled and dirty children’s clothes, found after the waters receded. Iwanami’s images tell a heartbreaking story about loss, grief, and acceptance, combining pictures from large-scale search efforts with personal mementos (photographs, old toys and clothes, drawings). In addition, the book includes written accounts of each of the lost children.

Andre Kertesz - Marcher Dans L'image

Isbn 9791092265859
Publisher Andre Frere Editions
Idea code 20128
€ 41.95

André Kertész (1894–1985) is widely considered a pioneer of 20th-century photography. The Hungarian-born photographer was an early adopter of the easily portable Leica camera, which allowed him to explore new ways of depicting the world around him. This book presents a detailed examination of his negatives, as well as the technical manipulations he employed. Through a careful selection of images, aesthetic reflections, and historical research, it offers new insight into why Kertész, striking the right balance between the avant-garde and the rise of new media reportage (of which he was one of the main initiators) has left his mark on subsequent generations of photographers.
