Erwin Wurm - Photographs

Isbn 9791090306950
Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 20103
€ 48.40

This volume is published with the first retrospective of Erwin Wurm’s (1954) photographic work, organised by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris. It explores the eclectic practice of this Austrian artist by bringing together around 200 photographs from the late 1980s to the present, including original contact sheets and prints from the artist’s personal archive that have never before been shown publicly. In addition, the book examines the artistic process through which Wurm created many of his major works and series, and also features his recent large-format Polaroids. For Wurm, it is clear that photography is nothing less than a “sculptural” form of expression.

Olaf Nicolai - All Our Suns (Limited Artist Edition)

Isbn 9789492811745
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 20220
€ 34.05

Every image in ‘All Our Suns’ is taken from Olaf Nicolai's collection of pictures of outer space that have been printed in daily newspapers. These images suggest a high degree of objectivity, though technological settings as well as individual wishes and imaginings determine the result of the depiction. The collection is based on a fascination with spectacular pictures and an interest in image-generating procedures. Yet it is also triggered by the temporally paradoxical entanglement of daily news on Earth and extraterrestrial occurrences. The book collects traces of a possible audience out there looking down on our sceneries here.

Thomas Kuijpers - Hoarder Order

Isbn 9789490119874
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 20251
€ 35.00

The work of Thomas Kuijpers always emerges from a current event, or series of current events, which he uses to investigate how the stories told about these events influence our daily lives. To do this, he collects all kinds of material: newspapers, posters, fragments of conversations, YouTube videos, and Twitter comments. From this act of collecting, new connections appear, as well as insights into how narratives about specific subjects are shaped. From this foundation of interconnected subjects and things arises work where the source material is often still visible. Like a sprawling index, ‘Hoarder Order’ is the result of 20 years of creating and (re-)ordering this collection.

Rein Jelle Terpstra - Dark Dunes

Isbn 9789072532466
Publisher Van Zoetendaal Publishers
Idea code 20221
€ 22.00

Imagine an enthusiastic amateur photographer, active during the German occupation of the Netherlands. Meticulous in his handling of the medium, he writes down shutter times and aperture stops in the margins of his negatives, and also records the time of day, the weather, and the year. Almost all of his pictures are dated between 1940 and 1945. He photographs landscapes, tulips, farms, windmills, country roads, and more, immersing us in everyday life in the Netherlands during wartime. Yet there is no sign of the war at all. Rein Jelle Terpstra gathered a series of negatives that show how photography can conceal reality, instead of revealing it – escapist rather than engaging.

Hans Bol - White Crow

Isbn 9789080876798
Publisher Recto Verso Publications
Idea code 20240
€ 30.00

In 2011 photographer Hans Bol’s father was diagnosed with cancer. In response, he took his camera and began a touching and intimate chronicle of the elderly man’s gradual deterioration over the next six months, until his father finally passed away in the comfort of a hospice, no longer able to speak. Bol could not have predicted that he would end up making the series ‘White Crow’, or what would result from the process of inevitably saying goodbye to a loved one. Interspersed with pictures of his father are images of crows and ravens that appear frequently in Bol’s work. In this publication he views them as messengers of the gods, symbols of transformation and harbingers of eternity.

Isbn 9783906822365
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 20233
€ 56.35

In the Los Angeles suburb of San Fernando Valley, Wednesday night was cruise night. A long stretch of Van Nuys Boulevard would be packed with kids and cars from all over Southern California – the place to show off your ride. By 1972, the year Rick McCloskey went to Van Nuys to shoot this series of photographs, the culture on the boulevard had become an amalgamation of various lifestyles, automobiles, and very different looks and styles. The tribes included surfers, low-riders, muscle cars, street racers, and even “retro” styles from the 1950s. McCloskey offers a fascinating portrayal of the young people, their cars, and iconic backgrounds; a world that has long since vanished.

Isbn 9789082265057
Publisher Hanekroot Photography Books

Between 1972 and 1977, Gijsbert Hanekroot photographed musician Lou Reed on several occasions, during concerts and interviews in Amsterdam. An extensive selection of these images was made for this photobook, which is supplemented by an informative background on the early years of Reed’s solo career, authored by Sebastiaan Vos. Following his departure from the legendary rock band The Velvet Underground, Reed released his first solo album in 1972 and went on tour. His erratic and reckless style gradually matured by the mid-1970s, making way for the rock poet many know and love today. Vos also gives meticulously documented descriptions of the images.

Sterling Ruby | Robert Mapplethorpe

Isbn 9789491245244
Publisher Xavier Hufkens
Idea code 20235
€ 30.00

This catalogue was originally published with an exhibition featuring work by artist Sterling Ruby and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe that was shown at Xavier Hufkens, Brussels, in 2010. Ten years later, the gallery has published a revised edition of the catalogue that includes original texts by Ed Schad and Ruby, whose practice involves an interweaving of philosophical enquiry and material investigation across a remarkably diverse visual range, wherein also different techniques and media are (re-)combined. Ruby’s reconfigured, non-hierarchical objects thus offer a stark contrast to the nuanced, black-and-white and often erotic imagery that characterises Mapplethorpe’s body of work.

Lovers' Lane - Pascale Wiedemann | Daniel Mettler

Isbn
Publisher Everyedition
Idea code 20187
€ 47.30

Artist couple Pascale Wiedemann and Daniel Mettler have been working together since 2002. For their fifth joint presentation at Lullin + Ferrari gallery in Zurich, they chose a new approach, which can be described as more dialogical than those of previous exhibitions. The works are based on direct exchange, whereby the path of the lovers unfolds in 33 pairs of pictures, each consisting of a photograph by Mettler and a work by Wiedemann. Examples of the latter include paintings on velvet, cut-out pieces of synthetic fabric, and encaustics. This dialogue between the duo resulted in pairings that might be surprising to observers, where the answer is not always immediately obvious.

Tomihiro Kono - Personas 111 The Art Of Wig Making 2017-2020

Isbn 9780998620503
Publisher Konomad Editions
Idea code 20260
€ 38.25

Underlying the work of Tomihiro Kono is a modern reinterpretation of two parallel phenomena with their origins in the classics: masks and the power of transformations. When putting on one of his handcrafted wigs, the wearer takes on a different “persona” and becomes an entirely new character. This remarkable collection of wigs, inspired by a combination of disciplines ranging from art and architecture to music, fashion, and more, seems to be about finding physical and metaphysical space. Often wildly coloured and styled, the wigs represent a struggle within ourselves, but also an opportunity to search for a new essence, to grow and change, while undergoing a cathartic process.

Hiroyo Kaneko - Appearance

Isbn 9784861527746
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 20172
€ 55.25

‘Appearance’ is a portrait project begun in 2010 by photographer Hiroyo Kaneko that depicts people while they are singing. By photographing the act of singing, Kaneko attempts to capture both the uniqueness and commonality of each subject. People convey their emotions when they sing, and in the process a variety of expressions and gestures appear and disappear, sometimes unexpectedly. According to the photographer, they seem to stand right at the threshold of self-expression and self-consciousness. Kaneko’s subjects are adults and children whom she mostly encountered while living in San Francisco and Oakland, and each selected their own song to perform.

Collaborators since 2013, Jean-Marc Caimi and Valentina Piccinni mix documentary photography with a more personal and intimate style of making images. ‘Güle Güle’ is a journey through the many microcosms of Istanbul, and departs from stereotypical touristic images to discover the more intimate and surprising aspects of the city. The series documents the profound changes taking place in Turkish society, immersing its audience in realities such as gentrification, marginalisation of the poorer classes, growing discrimination against homosexuality, massive influxes of Syrian refugees, and the position of the Kurdish community. With a text by Brad Feuerhelm.
