Bertrand Cavalier - Concrete Doesn't Burn

Isbn 9789490119850
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 20390
€ 35.00

Bertrand Cavalier investigates how political upheaval becomes visible in the urban landscape and how this affects the lives of the people who live in it. He photographs places that have been marked by armed conflicts in the past. For inhabitants, this is often no more than the backdrop against which they live their lives. However, politics have a way of subliminally impacting on people’s habits and dictating behaviour. By photographing the townspeople in their own context, Cavalier reveals their true connection with their environment.

Nicolas Floc'h - Invisible

Isbn 9789492811783
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 20361
€ 43.80

With 'Invisible', a visual, photographic research project on the underwater seascapes of the Calanques, Nicolas Floc'h set out to capture the state of the underwater seascapes at a given point in time, between 2018 and 2020, by following the entire 162-kilometre coastline of the Calanques National Park. The images, taken between 0 and -30 metres deep, in natural light and with a wide-angle lens, present a panorama of the natural and man-made landscapes and their transformations. The black-and-white photographs show the sea as it offers itself to the eye.

Hayahisa Tomiyasu - Silver Leipzig | Yokohama

Isbn 9783952489468
Publisher Everyedition
Idea code 20401
€ 31.20

Hayahisa Tomiyasu decided to photograph parked silver cars in two cities: Yokohama and Leipzig. In the series ‘Silver’, he arranges the images he took over the course of a couple of years as pairs of similar models. Oftentimes the make and year of the cars is almost identical. Interestingly, in his arrangement the parked cars always face each other, because Japan and Germany have opposing rules when it comes to the direction of traffic. The result is a rather subtle portrayal of cultural differences, which otherwise would recede into the background of what might come across as standard street photographs.

Ruth van Beek - Eldorado

Isbn 9789072532480
Publisher Van Zoetendaal Publishers
Idea code 20452
€ 30.00

Ruth van Beek uses the established visual codes of photography to guide viewers into a belief in the incredible rarity or importance of the depicted object, even when that object is unidentifiable. From a growing archive of found photographic material, she arranges images in constantly changing ways. Specialist books and magazines from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s are the primary source for her odd and playful collages, with subjects such as tending bonsai trees, caring for cacti, and the Japanese art of flower arranging. Van Beek cuts and folds, adding paper shapes painted with watercolours and forging often unsettling or comical visual connections between the images.

Hernie & Plume By Katherine Longly

Isbn 9789492051547
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 20418
€ 30.00

Belgian photographer Katherine Longly met Blieke, Nicole, and their little dog “Plume” on a December evening. She had been taking pictures of illuminated caravans on a campsite on the outskirts of Brussels when a man came out and asked her what she was doing there. She started to apologise, but to her surprise he asked her in for a drink. Longly and the couple became friends, and soon they were inviting her to parties while relating their fascinating life story. She even gave them disposable cameras to record themselves at moments when she was absent. While their story flirts with stereotypes that we all tend to have, this book is about social mobility, ageing, and true love.

Corinne By Bruno Stettler

Isbn
Publisher Everyedition
Idea code 20395
€ 39.80

A book dedicated to the muse of photographer Bruno Stettler, Corinne (aka Colli, Coco, Acid), with whom he worked between 1980 and 1986. A key figure in Zurich’s party scene in the 1980s, she played a pivotal role in getting the photographer access to numerous celebrity figures and musicians, among them David Bowie, Public Enemy, Motorhead, and the Beastie Boys. Corinne, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 53, was not just a party girl, groupie, and model – she would also take on different personalities. In private portraits and snapshots from backstage or out the city, Stettler captures her many facets, her kinetic, one-of-a-kind character, and her femme fatale allure.

Erwin Wurm - Self-Portraits As 47 Pickles

Isbn 9782492175008
Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 20355
€ 30.00

The pickle is a recurring figure in Erwin Wurm’s work. In 2008 he created an installation titled 'Selbstporträt als Gurken' (“Self-portrait as pickles”). To compose the piece, he emptied a jar of pickles, encapsulating each one with painted resin before placing them on individual pedestals. Each condiment was then photographed following the same protocol. This book presents the resulting series of photographs.

Dafna Talmor - Constructed Landscapes

Isbn 9789490119843
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 20443
€ 45.00

‘Constructed Landscapes’ is an ongoing project by photographer Dafna Talmor that consists of landscapes created through a process of collaged and montaged colour negatives shot in different locations. While reconfiguring the images, she generates a space that defies specificity; transient landscapes that blur place, memory, and time in a conflation of reality and the imaginary. These reference historical processes, such as early pictorialist tendencies of combination printing and modernist experiments with the materiality of film, yet her work also engages with contemporary discourses on manipulation, the analogue/digital divide, and the effects these have on photography’s status.

Noemie Goudal - Soulevements

Isbn 9791090306943
Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 20356
€ 32.50

‘Soulèvements’ is the continuation of a large-scale photographic project by Noémie Goudal that deals with the history of sciences and major geological theories. Starting from archaeological discoveries that have revealed the existence of fossils on mountaintops, the series reinterprets scientific findings about the Earth’s formation. Photographing using an array of 30 mirrors, Goudal sculpts rocky landscapes in improbable ways, playing with both the viewer’s gaze and imagination. In addition to the series of photographs, the publication contains a separate booklet with theoretical texts, an archive of scientific iconography, and images documenting the artist’s perspective.

Publisher Van Zoetendaal Publishers
Idea code 20412
€ 33.00

In ‘Rotterdam/Dresden’, Otto Snoek places modern-day panoramas of the two cities next to each other. The parallels between them are strong: both cities suffered traumatic bombings during the Second World War, and both have been since rebuilt as powerful and dynamic urban centres. Through his images and their juxtapositions, Snoek interweaves the narrative of these parallel places.

Erik van der Weijde - Lithium

Isbn 9789492811806
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 20426
€ 15.55

In ‘Lithium’ Erik van der Weijde once again turns the camera on his son, who is now a teenager. The photographs were taken between 2018 and 2019, capturing a pivotal time in their lives and relationship. The series is partly set in Brazil, his son’s home country, during their last year together there, and also partly in their first year after moving to Europe. It is clear that transitions and the gap between expectations and reality left their mark on this period.

Tim Coghlan - Hell's Gates: Notre Damned, An Act Of God

Isbn
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 20406
€ 16.50

A limited supplement volume to Melbourne-based designer and publisher Tim Coghlan's 2018 book 'Hell's Gates' – which was published in an edition of 666 copies – 'Hell's Gates: Notre Damned, An Act of God' again draws on the ubiquity of shared images depicting the burning and decimation of a house of worship. As the book's title suggests, here, Coghlan directs his strategic Google Images searches to photographs of the blaze that felled Paris's famed Notre Dame cathedral in April 2019.

All At War - Photography By German Soldiers 1939-45

Isbn 9789493039438
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 20327
€ 44.90
