Bottomless Bag - Na Kim

Isbn 9789492811790
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 20294
€ 24.35

Published with Na Kim’s eponymous solo exhibition at the Seoul Museum of Art, which is dedicated to letting children explore the artist’s visual language through works in various mediums, this book offers a better understanding of those works and her oeuvre as a whole. The title, ‘Bottomless Bag’, is borrowed from the mysterious bag in the animated film ‘Inside Out’. The bag contains endless odds and ends belonging to the main character, which link her to her memories. It also recalls the “Object Bag”, which was widely used for educational purposes in elementary schools in Korea during the 1980s. As such, the exhibition becomes Na Kim’s bag containing her collection of work.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton has always held a particular interest for Gerhard Richter, who has become one of the standout artists of its collection. With this monograph, the Fondation presents numerous works by Richter from the collection. The selection includes examples from the ‘Strip’ and ‘Flow’ series, as well as more recent series of lacquer-painted photographs. The artworks are accompanied by an interview with Richter by Dieter Schwarz and essay by Philippe Dagen.

Truth Is Black / Examining Arab Art Today

Isbn 9789082148435
Publisher The Khalid Shoman Foundation
Idea code 20389
€ 30.00

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of its support for contemporary Arab artists, Darat al-Funun invited artists to pause and reflect, to reimagine our world, and to reinvent their narrative following the challenge set by the late poet Mahmoud Darwish: “Truth is black, write over it with a mirage’s light”. The publication’s first volume documents exhibitions and events held in 2018, presenting encounters between artists and their place in the world today. The second presents the findings of a public colloquium held in Amman in summer 2018, expanding knowledge about Arab art, challenging paradigms, and calling for a reassessment of conventional narratives about the region.

Solid research skills are crucial for artists and designers hoping to contribute viable and alternative ways of thinking to counter neoliberalism. This volume presents projects that shift the perspective, alter understanding, and open up new possibilities in the quest to discover what is not yet known or understood. This research strives for a more transdisciplinary way forward, outside the bubbles of graduation shows, gallery openings, and funding cycles. The projects are structured into twelve topical themes, each embedded in a recent news story that positions how that topic is approached by mainstream media. Responses from various academic contributors conclude each chapter.

Stephanie Baechler - Dear Clay,

Isbn 9789082771213
Publisher Building Fictions
Idea code 20427
€ 30.00

'Dear Clay', gathers a selection of spreads extracted from Stéphanie Baechler’s meticulous sketchbooks displayed in chronological order (2013–2019), as well as 35 mm photographs documenting her working process. Providing an intimate insight into her artistic practice, it reveals what facilitates the work from its conception to its making, transportation, and installation. Rather than presenting it as a final staged object, we see the work as something unpolished, unfinished, in flux. Activating this archive of images allows to search for what creates the identity of a work behind the surface of the conventional gallery presentation.

Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 20417
€ 29.95

Saints walking around headless, vagina-shaped wounds and a Jesus being crushed like a grape: welcome to medieval man’s intriguing perception of the world. Thanks to a growing fixation on the body and body parts, some of the works of art created in the late Middle Ages meet with amazement and sometimes incomprehension today. How should we, from our position in the present, look at these works of art from so long ago? 'Body Language' introduces you to the role of the body in devotion in the late Middle Ages (1300-1500) and to the surprising/sometimes bizarre works of art associated with it.

The Stuart Brisley Interviews: The Art Of Performance And Its After- Lives

Isbn 9781912570096
Publisher Book Works
Idea code 20414
€ 22.20

This publication presents a series of interviews on the practice of Stuart Brisley (1933), held by curator and writer Gilane Tawadros and directed by the artist. In talking about his practice, Brisley demonstrates a tireless resistance to controlling the narrative or fixing the meaning of his works, while also emphasising the critical importance of error to the creation of his performances. Clearly, the enduring fascination of Brisley’s oeuvre, which over the years has included performance art, sculpture, and installation art, lies in its formless and slippery characteristics that resonate so poignantly with our shared human condition. “Errors make for where the key value lies”.

The Aesthetics of Ambiguity - Understanding and Addressing Monoculture

Isbn 9789492095763
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 20410
€ 22.50

In today’s globalised world, terms such as multiculturalism and pluralism assume a shared culture with shared values and convictions about openness, democracy, and equality. This in turn can be seen as a monoculture of views and attitudes. Yet being able to deal with differences, paradoxes, and ambiguities results from a learning process and does not just happen on its own. Art has played a pivotal role in this process since the dawn of modernity, and artists in particular have the ability to play with cultural conventions. This book gives a platform to art and artists who dare to challenge the rules of our globalised, monocultural society, and explores their successes and failures.

Aurelia Peter - Through The Mask

Isbn 9783952489451
Publisher Everyedition
Idea code 20430
€ 31.90

Show and hide, open and protect, associate and dissociate – opposites and transitions determine the essence of masks. The interest in ritual masks marks the starting point of this project of Swiss arits and designer Aurelia Peter. At the centre of the exploration are three modern masks whose different details are depicted on both sides (outside and inside). The publication illustrates the phenomenon of the mask: making visible and recognizing that the mask can be based on cultural as well as on social norms and values within a social system or under individual circumstances.

Alexandra Hopf - Becoming Siren (September 1940 - May 1941)

Isbn 9783907112342
Publisher Vexer Verlag
Idea code 20353
€ 39.50

With ‘Becoming Siren’, Alexandra Hopf links the cultural history of the mythological Sirens with the story of the siren suit, a one-piece garment for the whole body which can easily be put on or taken off. Worn by women in England for comfort and modesty, but also popular among men and children, the suit was designed for use during air raids in World War II. Wearing these overalls, the dancers of the performance group The Sirens would entertain inside bunkers and London Underground shelters. The historical source material and reconstructed dance scenes reveal the diversity of the siren, in turn opening up space to dissolve gender polarities and class differences.

Claudia Van Eeden - Coo-Ee!

Isbn 9780648680123
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 20404
€ 29.25

‘Coo-ee!’ is a loving and caring celebration of a land that is both beautiful and brutal, hardy and vulnerable. Melbourne-based artist Claudia Van Eeden crafts a vibrantly optimistic ode to the landscape, iconography, and visual language of Australia. Presenting her work as a travel diary of sorts, where every page features an original painting, she renders the scenery, weather, passers-by, and native flora and fauna in loose, playful brushstrokes. Van Eeden celebrates Australia in a way that balances humour with sincerity in a style that extends beyond kitsch to rest somewhere closer to that of naïve art.

Yuya Tsukahara + Contact Gonzo - Watching You Surf On Beautiful Accidents

Isbn 9782378961053
Publisher Les Presses Du Reel
Idea code 20282
€ 10.75

This catalogue is published in conjunction with the first presentation in France of work by contact Gonzo, a Japanese performance collective hailing from Osaka and founded by Yuya Tsukahara in 2006. Tsukahara’s performances are characterised by jarring physical contact, oftentimes suggestive of street fighting or butoh dance forms. Just as Hunter S. Thompson, pioneer of gonzo journalism, rejected the conventions of the written press, contact Gonzo nonchalantly transgresses the codes of contemporary dance. Starting with a presence on YouTube, where it posted raw and resolutely amateurish videos of performances in public space, the collective quickly made a name for itself.
