Adriana Varejao - Polvo
Isbn 9788412279207 Publisher Ivorypress Idea code 21105 € 50.60
Adriana Varejão’s fascination with miscegenation and skin colour is explored in this previously unpublished work, which takes the form of a double deck of cards. Here she addresses the notion of interracial identity in her native Brazil. While the Brazilian census traditionally divides its population into five groups according to predefined skin tone patterns, in 1976 it posed an open question: “What is your colour?” The result was 136 self-definitions. Some of the terms sound poetic or unusual, more figurative than literal, or belong to a specific cultural context. But the survey and its representation of the diversity of skin tones also seems to uncover Brazil’s latent racism in an unconventional way.

Evelyn Taocheng Wang - Het Bloemblaadje, Dat Tijdens Het Ochtendkrieken Was Gevallen, Paktte Ik Op In De Avondschemering
Isbn 9789081671354 Publisher Abn Amro Idea code 21049 € 25.00
Evelyn Taocheng Wang, winner of the 9th Edition of the ABN AMRO Art Award, is a Chinese artist based in Rotterdam. Her mysterious and seductive work refers to issues around gender, power structures, and identity, as well as the degree to which identity is culturally determined. Her drawings, videos, performances, and installations depart from her personal history and draw from a classically traditional Chinese style combined with a more conceptual approach, blurring fiction and reality. Published on the occasion of the award, the artworks in this book (translated as ‘The Petal which had Fallen At Dawn, I Picked Up in the Evening Twilight’) are all specially printed on fold-out pages.

Philippe Weisbecker - Joyo Oh
Isbn 9782902565016 Publisher Fotokino Idea code 21166 € 10.75
Philippe Weisbecker’s work is a constant search for simplicity and the essence of the subjects he draws. Thoughtfulness, humility, and pleasure is discernible in the manner he transcribes reality in the most prosaic and genuine way, from his kitchen, to his street, to the shelves of the local hardware store. Weisbecker always proceeds by series, yet again, as with this collection of train stations and small electrical transformers. ‘Joyo Oh’ is the name of the Spanish manufacturer that produces the charming railway toys that are reproduced here in this facsimile of a drawing book created in 2019.

Philippe Weisbecker - U.s. Trucks
Isbn 9782902565054 Publisher Fotokino Idea code 21167 € 17.50
Philippe Weisbecker’s work is a constant search for the essence of the subjects he draws. His line is clear and he brings the form to its essence with an almost schematic representation. However, this simplicity vibrates and, far from being cold and distant, brings you closer to the objects represented. One perceives attention, humility, and a pleasure to transcribe the most ordinary reality. As a well-organized storekeeper, in his drawings, Weisbecker proceeds by series. ‘U.S. Trucks’ is the very first one he made, filled conscientiously with vehicles seen in the streets of New York, from a UPS oversize parcel service truck to an express airport carpool van.

Philippe Weisbecker - Le Service Shell A Travers Le Sahara
Isbn 9782902565115 Publisher Fotokino Idea code 21168 € 17.50
Imagine traveling across the Sahara in the 1930s by bus with the Trans-Saharan General Transport Company, or serving remote villages as a doctor in the Congo and Rwanda. To avoid a fuel breakdown en route, people relied on Shell, which installed drinking water and fuel supply stations every few hundred kilometers. These were marked in their guidebook to ‘Automobile and Air Tourism’ and carried religiously by daring motorists. This book of illustrations is based on a copy of the book given to the illustrator by a friend. He sketches simplified versions of the trucks, fuel pumps, mosques, and other points of interest printed in the original guidebook.

Edwin Schlossberg - Tidal Gestures | World: Nerve
Isbn 9788412279214 Publisher Ivorypress Idea code 21104 € 28.90
With this book, artist Edwin Schlossberg juxtaposes two text-based graphic works in a single publication. ‘Word: Nerve’ gathers together words that have very extensive meanings, each creating a mood from the associations within each word and between the words of one particular letter, and by extension also between the words of each of the letters. Schlossberg selected each word based on its multiplicity of meanings and because it means something to him. In the series ‘Tidal Gestures’ (1990), he looks at words as they are based on sounds, seeing them as arrays of letters which can then be fragmented into pieces, creating seemingly endless forms, patterns, and compositions.

Rei Naito - Mirror Creation
Isbn 9784908062315 Publisher Hehe Idea code 21130 € 67.45
The catalogue for an exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, ‘Mirror Creation’ showcases work by the artist Rei Naito. In engaging in a dialogue with the space, Naito combines natural elements with delicate motifs, and layers faint colours on canvas to evoke primordial scenes. Her expressions of the creation of life oscillate between human beings and nature, life and death, inside and outside, and also act in ways that copy, reflect, and alter these themes. In developing a sense of unity with the anima and the compassion that emerges from her mirrored images, a moment of creation is manifested. Naito was born in Hiroshima in 1961.

Sagacho Exhibit Space 1983-2000 Fixed-Point Observation Of Contemporary Art
Isbn 9784908062339 Publisher Hehe Idea code 21131 € 40.70
Since opening its doors in November 1983 and until its closure in 2000, the Sagacho Exhibit Space hosted more than 100 exhibitions. The brainchild of Kazuko Koike, it was Japan’s first experimental exhibition space to transcend traditional genres of art, design, fashion, architecture, and photography. On the edge of the city, in a 1920s warehouse that once housed the central rice market of Japan, Sagacho offered artists an unparalleled space. Many of the exhibitions were site-specific, inspired by the high ceilings and open floor plan. This book traces the trajectory of Sagacho and Japanese contemporary art, covering 50 works by 25 artists exhibited during its years of operation.

Isbn 9786069505502 Publisher Punch Idea code 21071 € 19.35
The Romanian word “bezna” translates as consistent darkness and diffuse fear. It was also the name of a zine published between 2011 and 2014 that comprised five issues collectively edited by artists Florin Flueras, Veda Popovici, Arnold Slahter, Claudiu Cobilanschi, Irina Gheorghe, and Alina Popa, in the memory of whom this anthology is published. The five issues are themed as follows: The Dark Side of Art and Its Autonomy (#1), Apocalypse and Protests (#2), Postspectacle Shelter (#3), The Netherworld (#4), and Darkness, Unknown, Fear (#5). Bezna is darkly glowing dead thinking, cosmic pessimism, aesthetic autophagia, shadow bodies, and much more beyond.

You Know Where I'm At And I Know Where You're At - Gary Hill & Martin Cothren
Isbn 9782914563963 Publisher Dis Voir Idea code 21072 € 31.20
New media and video artist Gary Hill happened to meet Martin Cothren (1960–2016), a Native American fisherman from the Yakama Reservation in Washington state, while searching for subjects for his work. Their encounter evolved into an ambivalent friendship of otherness, a 20-year saga poignantly documented in this book through handwritten letters and prose interspersed with Cothren’s own drawings depicting traditional native iconography and images. An account of their common history, both touching and tragic, the story manifests as a non-linear play of living memory as well as a tribute to Cothren, who died homeless shortly after being released from prison.

It contains commissioned artworks and new texts, brief studies of experiments in art and radical publishing, and a bibliography of further reading. In addition, it includes reprints of texts on subjects ranging from collective production to licensing and archiving. Its non-linear, three-part format renders the performative dimension of our interactions with books visible and tangible.

Have You Ever Seen A Nomad In A Hurry? Gilles Clement & Thierry Fontaine
Isbn 9782914563970 Publisher Dis Voir Idea code 21073 € 31.20
Both Gilles Clément and Thierry Fontaine are practiced globetrotters who are fascinated by the evolution of living things and mutant landscapes. Clément is a horticultural engineer, landscape architect, and gardener who teaches at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure du Paysage in Versailles. Hailing from Réunion Island, Fontaine is a photographer whose often poetic images are born from the staging and situations that he has conceived and organised beforehand. He raises questions of hybridisations and crossbreeding, seeking encounters both imposed and fortuitous. Part of the ‘Encounters’ series, this book introduces the dual visual-theoretical investigations of these two creators.

Like A Moth To A Flame - Liam Gillick, Mark Rappolt, Tom Eccles
Isbn 9788875708450 Publisher Corraini Edizioni Idea code 21154 € 27.80
This book derives from an exhibition by the same name, which explored the eternal compulsion to produce and to collect works of art, displaying objects drawn together from Turin’s most prominent collections. It traces the work done in Turin by three outstanding curators from around the world: Tom Eccles, director of Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College in New York, Mark Rappolt, editor-in-chief of the British magazine Art Review, and the British artist Liam Gillick. The title comes from the answer to a riddle – In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni – and outlines a possible method for recounting a place through its artistic heritage.

Shelf Documents - Art Library As Practice (Reprinted)

Artists, writers, curators, teachers, and librarians reflect on how they can use the beloved library as a source of inspiration or a field of action for anyone who identifies as a woman, queer, non-binary, or a person of colour. In thinking about diversity in collections, the publication proposes art libraries as sites of intersubjective communion. This represents a collaborative book acquisition project, initiated by artist Heide Hinrichs at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, in which her group integrated 223 new titles in art libraries as a way to fill gaps, to amplify voices, and seek out the self-initiated or the overlooked.

Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a Japanese artist. He was one of the most prominent print designers of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement. Kawase worked almost exclusively on landscape and townscape prints based on sketches he made in Tokyo and during travels around Japan. However, his prints are not merely meishō (famous places) prints that are typical of earlier ukiyo-e masters such as Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). Kawase's prints feature locales that are tranquil and obscure in urbanizing Japan.

Door Kunst Onderwezen Willen Worden - Kunsteducatie 'na' Joseph Beuys
Isbn 9789491444685 Publisher Artez Press Idea code € 19.95
In this book, Gert Biesta presents a new approach to contemporary art education by showing the unique possibilities the arts offer to establish a dialogue with the world around us. This approach to art education is based on teaching as a process of showing, where the teacher shows the student what could be good, important or meaningful to master in the world. As a starting point for illustrating this method, the book proposes 'How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare' (1965) by Joseph Beuys, which Biesta uses in order to draw out a number of important lessons about teaching.
