Springs And Wells - Manhattan And The Bronx: Stanley Greenberg

Isbn 9789490119966
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 21253
€ 37.50

Between 1897 and 1903, James Reuel Smith rode around Manhattan and the Bronx on his bicycle with a camera and tripod, documenting the springs and wells that were disappearing as the city grew and as water from the Croton Aqueduct reached more residents. He left money in his will for the New-York Historical Society to publish a book of his photos, which they did in 1938. Stanley Greenberg revisited every site in the book, on foot or by bicycle, between 2016 and 2020. ‘Springs and Wells’ combines Greenberg’s pictures with Smith’s original photography and complete original texts.

Issei Suda - My Japan

Isbn 9789490119959
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 21251
€ 20.00

For Issei Suda (1940–2019), photography was a means to document the ordinary and reveal the extraordinary. Traditional country festivals were a favourite subject, but he also saw theatre in Tokyo’s street life. Suda had a talent for square format compositions and is known for the technical perfection of his black-and-white prints as well as for his unique and surrealistic visual style. 'Issei Suda – My Japan' is an introduction to his life’s work, from the 1960s until the publication of his final book in 2018. It includes rarely seen photographs from his early stage photographer days for the avant-garde theatre troupe Tenjo Sajiki, and iconic series, such as Fushi Kaden and Waga Tokyo 100.

Bernadette Mergaerts - Flisvos

Isbn 9789492051684
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 21261
€ 35.00

When visiting the Greek island of Corfu in the winter of 2015, Bernadette Mergaerts noticed that, in spite of the cold, many people were swimming at various places along the shoreline. All of the swimmers were adults, some of them elderly. She was impressed by how they seemed to find peace in the Ionian Sea. In the years following, Mergaerts learned more about the lives of these winter swimmers. About how they live day to day, and their shared concerns. With sensuous images, she shows the vitality and decline of nature as well as the bathers. In witnessing their daily swims, their immersion in the elements, she documents this ritual celebration of the winter season.

Isbn
Publisher Jb. Institute
Idea code 21250

Berlin-based photographer Dela Charles Lampacher was bored of studying, so she went on a trip around Europe, Australia, and the US. Her travels turned into a photo project, which turned into a book about skateboarding, architecture, and urbanism. A photobook by a female skateboard photographer is still a rarity these days, and in this one, Lampacher combines her view on architecture and urban structures with her experience as a skateboarder, through a series of images collected during the journey over the course of around 548 days. It comes with a poster of one photo which lists the cities featured, from Amsterdam to Vancouver.

Kyungwoo Chun - The Weight

Isbn 9789072532503
Publisher Van Zoetendaal Publishers
Idea code 21248
€ 40.00

Korean photographer Kyungwoo Chun’s blurred images are created through a process of continuous long exposure, a stylistic method to condense time that has become a characteristic trait in his work. His softly controlled treatment of his subjects, blurred portraits that depict people in an unconventional way, intensify the moment of encounter between the artist and his subject while also playing with traditional portraiture. Chun, who is based in Germany but photographs people from all over the world, addresses issues such as identity, physical interactions, and language barriers in his images, where figural forms can be transformed into abstracted colour and shapes.

This zine is an experimental layered translation of Stephan Keppel's presentation at project space Enter Enter in Amsterdam, made in collaboration with Hans Gremmen. In this zine Keppel explores the city as a collection of elements which repeat, vary, and multiply. Keppel creates a subjective databank of these elements, which he in turn repeats, varies, morphs and multiplies in such a way that a new perspective on the city is created.

Herma De Wit - Force Of Nature

Isbn 9789090342597
Publisher Herma De Wit
Idea code 21185
€ 50.00

Herma de Wit’s work, her bronze sculptures, objects, drawings, and etchings, reveal an almost obsessive relationship with nature. The images in this book derive from elements of nature that the Dutch artist has gathered for almost 20 years of travelling across the globe. The leaves, flowers, and seeds she finds and collects become a memory of the city or country. This collection of mainly isolated fragments of flora, thoughtfully bound by cahier-stitching, show the fragility and strength of an object through the medium of the monoprint, a technique she says helps her create poetic images from the most beautiful examples of her collection.

Matilde Soes Rasmussen - Unprofessional

Isbn 9788797052082
Publisher Disko Bay
Idea code 21209
€ 48.00

Through photography and text, Gothenburg-based artist Matilde Søes Rasmussen explores her time as a professional model. Having spent ten years in this role, she now turns her attention to questioning its power structures, beauty ideals, and objectification. ‘Unprofessional’ is a hybrid book that moves between documentary and fiction, performance and life, wherein she uses her own body to investigate how these structures impact self-image and identity. It is an attempt to find meaning in a career as a model, as an ever-changing character, and as something that is constantly being assessed, bought, sold, and admired. Rasmussen has decided to photograph back.

Takeshi Miyamoto - Spectrum

Isbn 9784907562274
Publisher Torch Press
Idea code 21109
€ 44.20

Takeshi Miyamoto visited Iceland annually from 2011 until 2019, during which he documented both masculinity and the Icelandic wilderness. He found its people seem to have a spectrum of fluid masculinity with a vague boundary of roughness and gentleness. His long-term journey of reinterpretation of this masculinity has convinced him that there are resemblances of vibrating energies between the natural environment and the human body. This photobook derives from Miyamoto’s long struggle with his own sexuality and soul-searching to find a balance between his body and his heart through his photographic communication with male subjects.

The Long Way Home of Ivan Putnik, Truck Driver

Isbn 9789492051660
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 21260
€ 16.00

This collection of photographs and notes on remote Siberian roads and towns seems to have been created by a truck driver named Ivan Putnik. In fact, the images were taken by various amateur photographers who then uploaded them to Google Street View. Fascinated by their visual diversity, the artistic trio Vaste Programme recontextualised the pictures to create a fictional story. Apart from offering a rare look at this remote area, the cropped stills represent universal environmental issues such as pollution, fossil fuel extraction, and the transformation of the landscape. Rather than amplifying the archetypal image of life in Siberia, the book provides both classic and unusual insights.

Isbn 9788797052075
Publisher Disko Bay

‘Siggie’ is a story of transformation, beauty, and complexity. The fluid and quiet come together in a narrative about time, life, and dreams told through 48 Polaroid images. The pictures are captured over a span of seven years during the 1990s, when Lisbet Nielsen lived in three different apartments with her daughter Siggie. We see images of interiors – lamps, pillows, furniture – and different sceneries, like a splash of sunlight on a table or a snowy view with rooftops covered by a violet veil. These are intertwined and bound together by the intimate portraits of Siggie, from the age of twelve until she becomes pregnant at eighteen.

Isbn
Publisher Akio Nagasawa
Idea code 20573
€ 26.30

In this issue of ‘Record’, Daido Moriyama reveals that in the spring of 2020 he became slightly ill, and eventually spent some time recovering in a hospital. Following his release, he stayed at his home in Zushi and spent most days walking around its streets, taking occasional snapshots. After years of not staying in Zushi, he writes how wandering through both the city and the seaside Shonan area prompted him to reminisce about the time he spent with photographer Takuma Nakahira, already more than 50 years ago. This issue mainly consists of the pictures that were taken between April and June, the period when Moriyama was hospitalised.

Idea code 21118
€ 24.20

Kaveh Kazemi arrived in Baghdad on 14 February, 1991, less than a month after combat to force Iraq out of Kuwait began. Being an Iranian photographer and a freelance photojournalist for international media, he was granted rare access, joining a limited number of foreign reporters on the ground to cover yet another deadly crisis in the Persian Gulf. Kazemi’s eyewitness account of Operation Desert Storm offers a glimpse into how bombardments by the US-led coalition forces killed civilians and caused widespread destruction of Iraq’s infrastructure while Saddam Hussein’s policies brought the country to its knees, forcing people, including many Kurds, to flee their homeland.

Myr Muratet - Paris Nord

Isbn 9782956781578
Publisher Building Books
Idea code 21117
€ 26.90

Myr Muratet’s first monograph offers a sensitive look at the fragile, precarious, and inventive forms developed by populations living on the margins. Through his images, we discover the interstices of the city as so many places in which the personal and private are nestled, where the wild and the forgotten coexist with the domestic and the everyday. This intimacy is opposed by massive and anonymous forms, which fill in the loopholes to prevent occupation, pushing further the communities that depend on it. Published on the occasion of the exhibition “Zone de confort” at Le Signe (National Center for Graphic Design) in Chaumont.

Looking head-on at the facades and locked club doors, Chovin captures her subjects in daylight. Her focus is on the exterior facades and inconspicuous entrances that line the streets. Through this focus, the clubs become part of an everyday urban environment rather than staged as places of raucous ecstasy. Some no longer exist-or will soon fall victim to gentrification.
